As some of you may know, back in October (Columbus Day to be exact ), I chaired my first blood drive. I wanted to give SO BAD and was temporarily deferred for low iron. I was so disappointed. We ended up collecting 29 pints (1 short of our goal of 30) and people kept telling me that if it wasn't for me, they wouldn't have gotten any since I put the whole thing together. Well, that's true, but I was still disappointed.
Anyway, today we had another blood drive (my theme to get people to sign up was "Give a pint, drink a pint - Happy St. Patty's Day!" LOL), and I've been trying SO hard to try to eat okay for IBS and make sure to get my iron up....and it worked!! I gave blood for the first time today, and I feel awesome!!!
Just had to share!

I know how you feel, Mags! My problem isn't iron, it's weighing enough I've only weighed enough once to give blood, and I was fine afterwards. I'm barely over the weight requirement right now, so maybe next blood drive for me!

Yes - I can't decide if the great feeling is from being excited, proud, blood loss, or all of the above.

Congrats!! It feels so good to be able to do that. I lean towards anemia myself so have a hard time giving blood but have done it a couple of times.

Thanks Ruchie! I don't think I get to find out who it helps. I do know that one pint of blood can save up to 3 lives though - so I may save 3 different people!
The end of last summer, I was just thinking about how I wanted to donate blood. I don't even know why. I honestly just wanted to do something good for other people, ya know what I mean? So, I thought about checking out how to give, then I looked on the website for Red Cross and they had a link for sponsoring a drive. So, I asked my boss if I could, and he said no problem, and the rest is history.

Ha! I bet there would be lots more donations that way.
There was only one other girl that donated today, and she screamed when they where checking her arms to where to put the needle! LOL She is a such a drama queen - she cracks me up! But, she survived. And we got our snacks & stickers and got out of there! LOL Oh yeah - we got stickers too that said "Be Nice to Me - I donated blood today!" LOL They were so cheesy - I loved it!!

Good job! I'm glad you finally got to give! My ex-stepdad used to donate platelets all the time because I geuss those are in pretty short supply too. Hemophyliacs (sp? like, the people that get a bruise and have to go to the hospitals because their blood doesn't clot?) need them for their health. Doesn't it feel good to know you helped??
