Hi, all.

I'm on a rant at the moment 'cause I just found out that my insurance doesn't cover hypnosis or acupuncture, and only covers consultations with dieticians for those with diabetes. ( NOTE: Not that I'm unhappy with Heather's diet, but I may be a celiac spue chick or at the very least gluten intolerant. I think if that's so, I'm going to need to talk to someone about my diet to make sure I'm getting the right nutrients! ARGH! )

I'm raging, here! That insurance won't cover these things is ridiculous!

If IBS is, indeed, the most commonly diagnosed gastro-intestinal disorder and is, indeed, the 2nd leading cause of worker absenteeism, don'tcha think insurance should cover these alternative treatments?

So my point is this: how many of you have insurance plans that would cover these types of services? I'm very curious to know if it's just my cheap-o company that's the problem, or if this is really wide-spread.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

Well, Jen, I just looked up my revised (2004) medical insurance policy. Hypnotherapy is most definitely not covered; I could not find anything on acupuncture, but dieticians and anything related to any diet plans is not covered.

I can understand your frustration. I have to pay for my medical insurance out of my own pocket; it costs me $348 a month, and that's for me ALONE, not hubby, and does not include dental insurance. It's frustrating because they keep raising it on me; last year it was only $299. I just argued with hubby about cancelling it, but he refused; it's one of the necessary evils of life, compared only with the stupid rising gasoline prices.

Don't get me started!

Thanks. I see I'm not in it alone!

Paying out of pocket for insurance is the sole reason I'm still working at this dumb job instead of making candy all day! I'm waiting 'til we can incorporate and get a company insurance plan.

Hi! I popped over here because of the ref on the hypno forum and I wanted to see what was going on.

I will make you feel better: I pay $670 per MONTH for me ALONE , no dental, for my health insurance because I work for myself, have pre-exising and am divorced. Feel sorry for me, will ya? I have to investigate something else, but with pre-existing stuff they exclude coverage for that in other polices. So frustrating.

OK vent over... thanks for letting me~

Marilyn,

I do feel sorry for you. VERY sorry for you! That's terrible.

I think I'm going to get on the insurance reform soapbox soon.... I don't know that the world is ready for my big mouth arguing for reform. I'm gonna talk 'em into a stupor 'til they are so frustrated they change the laws so that sick people (here's a wild idea!) get the treatment they need and don't have to pay out the wazoo for it!

ARGH! This can of worms is getting worse.

Marilyn, you have my hearfelt sympathy.

Hi Jen,

My insurance plan doesn't cover the alternative therapies, although things are little different in Canada. As well, I've lucked out a bit as both my Mum and my Aunt are dietitians.

I've also cut out gluten from my diet. My Mum went through what I was eating and found that as long as I'm careful, and have a lot of the fortified soy milk, I'll be doing pretty well for getting the proper nutrients.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your symptoms after eating gluten? Was it an immediate reaction or something more the next morning? I've been trying to integrate it back into my diet, but I find the morning after I have it I generally don't feel that great.

Jamie

hi jenX

We pay approx $6,000 a year for Kaiser for all five of us. It doesn't cover accupuncture or hypnosis but I think I can see the Kaiser dietician (or health educator) for a small fee.

I have a friend whose husband is a school teacher and their health insurance covers accupuncture.
