After 8 years of continual misery, removal of a gall bladder and supposed adhesions, my wifes problems remained. Her attacks went from once every 6 months down to once a day within 8 years. Until the other day when she said she did not want to come home from the hospital in fear of dealing with the pain without delaudid handy to quell the pain. That was it for me, I lambasted every doctor shes had and told them they were all idiots for not being able to first diagnose the problem and then treat it. Anyway, my own research, "by typing in bowels in yahoo search" led me to Heather's site and IBS. If this is her problem and we can get it under control by just changing her diet, PRAISE GOD. I have had her on low to no fat diet since Sunday evening when I went and just took her out of the hospital after threatening every incompetent in there of being sued for just being plain stupid. Needless to say, she hasn't had an attack yet. Although the mental fear comes into play when she is about to have a bowel movement, she is slowly getting over that fear. If we can make it to this coming Sunday, then I'll know that she is definetly doing the right thing with the diet we have her on. She loves the peppermint tea and enjoys chicken for just about every meal..LOL. Shes told me, that she'd eat nothing but what exactly would make her survive without those attacks. I am praying this will work. I have ordered Heathers book of IBS recipes, so I can feed her something different, but right now, we are not taking any chances, until we know alot more about what not to feed her. I want to thank you all for being here and discussing things that I can get more info out of in order to help my love...thanks..Mike

What a story! Don't get me started on doctors ....

How horrible for your dear wife -- but she is certainly lucky to have you to care for her. I commend you for all your efforts, Mike.

Is she seeing a GI? Was it the GI who removed her gall bladder? Did the GI give her a colonoscopy?

I truly hope you can get her better medical care; in the meantime, I'm glad that the diet is helping her and I hope it continues. Again, I'm just amazed at how truly wonderful some husbands can be -- thank you for showing that to me.

Bev

hi mike

I'm sorry your wife has received such poor care under those that you trusted to help her back to wellness. I'm glad she has you as an advocate because sometimes it gets so weary going at it alone.

I agree with you. I have learned more about IBS, treatment, diet, alternative treatment and medications here on this board (and in Heather's books) than I have ever learned from my docs or HMO. My doc is a well meaning person but I wish he would agree that he knows very little about my pain/symptoms and refer me to someone who does (I just found out today that my request for a referral to a gastroenterologist was approved, praise god!).

I am following Heather's diet, drinking the fennel and peppermint tea, taking the acacia and peppermint caps and also a probiotic (mainly because I've been on two doses of antibiotics recently). I also take Imodium as needed. This all seems to help. I do need the doc, though, to reconfirm that my change of symptoms is still IBS and not some other disorder/disease.

I wish you and your wife all the best. She is truly blessed to have you in her life, guiding her back to health and recovery.

Janet

Wow! What a story! It made me cry! That is such a long time for your poor wife to have to suffer! How hard for both of you! I'm so glad you found this site. I'm fairly new here, too. I suffered alone for several years; just thinking that this was a bad break in life and I had to live with it. Anything I know about IBS, I've learned here; from Heather, her books, and all the wonderful people who share on this site. I've still not had an official diagnosis either. I'm waiting to be approved for insurance, (they keep needing more information!) No one will do the tests on me without it; but I decided to try the diet and advice anyway. It has helped me so much. Having a day free of stomach pain, is such a wonderful gift! I hope your wife continues to do well. How nice of you to care enough to help her like this! Give her our regards and wish her well for us! You guys are certainly not alone!!

Mike,

Thank you for helping your wife out. I'm sure she appreciates it. It sounds like things have gotten desperate, and I feel so badly for the both of you.

I'm glad the diet seems to be working. It's really been a godsend for so many people, as I'm sure you've realized from reading this site.

If you haven't already, make sure you check out Heather's other book, The First Year if, indeed, it seems that IBS is what's wrong or even if it seems this diet may be making your wife more comfortable! It's got a lot of great advice for coping with what's been going on and what will be going on. I just reread it after 6 months, and got so much more out of it! I think I was just ready to get that new info. I'm especially interested in the hypnosis right now and will probably order the tapes. It sounds great for getting you past the fears you've got ingrained in ya from years of suffering.

Good luck to you and your wife, and thanks again for being such a great advocate for your wife. She's lucky to have you!

What a wonderful husband you are! Your wife is lucky woman to have you helping her with this research. Hang in there with her and don't give up looking for the answers. We have to take care of ourselves as when it comes to IBS, doctors don't have a clue.

You sound like a real sweetheart! Doctors are indeed useless. I had one doctor tell me that there was nothing abnormal about having lots of diarrhoea and getting dehydrated every single day!!!

Make sure your wife gets a colonoscopy to check it is IBS. I'm glad you found this site - it's helped me more than anything else.

Good luck. Oh - try out the recipes on the Recipe Index. There are some great ones. Just keep it simple until she's stabilised. My mushroom risotto (on the Recipe Index) is my staple food - it's got nothing bad in it and its yummy!
