I am trying faithfully to be a more organized person. I have subscribed to a couple of free websites on the subject...but I still feel I could use more tips.

Here are some of mine to start out:

Put things away when you're done with them (I know everyone's heard this one...but the more I hear it, the more I do it!) LOL

Find a home for everything in the location the object is most needed (for ex., put your apron in the kitchen not in the linen closet!)

This may not be organizational but... Make your bed every morning. While it may not be organizational, it sure makes the room seem more organized when a big piece is nice and tidy.

Gosh, where do I begin?

Just a few tips, eh? Hmmm..... oooh, I'm getting chills all over .......

Tip Number 1: Here's one that is really helpful and NOT extreme, despite what everyone may think: organize your spice cabinet alphabetically, with all the labels facing front. How often are you in the middle of a recipe and suddenly need a quarter teaspoon of coriander? It's not like cinnamon, something that you use all the time (so it's right in front), nor is it something you'd buy in a large bottle (such as parsley flakes), so it's hidden way in the back somewhere. You have to spend all that time searching, all the while your stock pot is boiling over. ARGHHH!!!

Tip #2: If you're a working person, maintain a briefcase or, preferrably, a tote bag that you carry back and forth with you, separately from a purse. When you're at home, put items in the tote that you need for the office: your lunch, emergency meds, and NOTES or reminders about things you need to get done that day. Then, when you get to the office you need only empty out the tote onto your desk; everything you have to do is right in front of you. Put back into the tote items that you need to take care of when you go home, purchases that you make during the day at lunch, the T-shirt your friend gave you for your daughter, things like that. Then, when you get home, just reverse the process.

Last Tip: Keep and maintain a packed overnight bag. In it put MINI-BOTTLES of all your necessities: all your makeup, makeup remover, astringent, Q-tips, cotton balls, tissues, feminine "wipes", toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair brush, an extra blow-dryer, even a little mini-flashlight and plug-in night light. Then, when you have to dash out of town unexpectedly, grab your emergency bag and a nightgown, and you're good to go! ALSO -- and here's the rub -- when you run out of any of these items in your daily routine, you have a "backup" on hand until you can get yourself to the drug store for more supplies.

----------------

I could go on forever. This was fun.

How do you get them organized without nagging and yelling? Impossible. HOWEVER, you can get men MOVING by simply threatening to re-arrange the furniture! Works EVERY time.

Men hate change. When I first got married, my mom-in-law pulled me aside and gave me one -- just ONE -- piece of advice: if I ever want to make a change, such as re-arranging the furniture, wait until hubby is out of the house and do it on my own.

Unfortunately, I forgot all about it, and soon after our wedding asked hubby to help me re-arrange the furniture in the living room. My goodness, he carried on like you would not believe! You'd have thought I'd asked him for a divorce. Needless to say, the living room stayed as it was. When I told his mom about it, she reminded me of her warning and said that, not only was my hubby like that, but so was his dad. She had to wait until they were both out of the house, and then she did all the work herself.

To this day -- after 37 years of marriage -- I have to wait until hubby is gone before I change ANYTHING in the house. Without giving away other people on this board's secrets, a particular gal told me that she is very busy fixing up her sunroom, with hubby kicking and screaming all the way.

So, Barb, if you want some privacy, just ask the men in your family to help you rearrange the furniture -- and see what happens.
