I have a question for those out there in the 40+ age category. Do you find it harder to lose weight now that 5-10 years ago? I resolved with the new year to get rid of the 5 pounds that have snuck their way in over the past couple of years, thinking "no big deal." I began exercising 30-45 min./day, 4-5 days per week and made sure my calorie intake was 1500-1800 per day - pretty balanced foods and with the IBS, pretty low fat as always. I can not budge one pound off!!! I have always been able to lose weight pretty easily if I just stepped up the exercise and was reasonable about what I ate. I refuse to feel starving, so 1500 calories is as low as I am willing to go. Is that my problem? Anyone else having this trouble and have you found a good jump starter? Thanks - Andie

Sorry, Andie, I'm afraid I can't be very encouraging. Unfortunately, our metabolism slows down in direct proportion to our aging process.
When I was 20, I could lose 5 pounds in one weekend. When I was 40, it took a week. When I was 50, it took a year. Now that I'm almost 60, it DOESN'T TAKE AT ALL.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hi Andie; lOSING WEIGHT has always been a struggle for me, but lately I have seem to have dropped a few pounds. I have a long way to go, though. I am trying to be more active as well as watch my diet. IT IS hard, though, because my family likes desserts and sweets so it is hard to stay away from them. a few ideas from dr, phil, is to do something instead of eating, something that yoyu can't do at the same time as eat. ALSO, I AM doing a thing called donate your steps to health research, where you use a pedometer to count your steps as you walk and eneter then on their site, it is called CANADAONTHGO.CA. THAT IS my plan for the year.

bev; it doesn't have to be that way. A lot of poeple in their later years are in great shape and are thin. TRhere is a lot of evidence for that.

I hear you, seems like I'm the same way, but OMG is it easy to have the weight pile on if one is not cautious. I'm on a rampage to get the 15 off I gained when I started to eat (somewhat) normal again. I fear it will be merely an effort in futility.

At least there is comfort in knowing I am not the only one Thanks to all for your thoughts. I will just have to focus on the other reasons I exercise (stress-relief, feels good (to be done!), etc. and the benefits of a healthy diet! Nothing like IBS to keep me honest!

I won't pretend to know (I'm young, sorry!), but I wanted to add that something many women don't consider is adding strength training. I suggest keeping the amount you do, and them a few times a week try lifting weights/doing weight machines. The more muscle you have in your body, the higher your metabolism gets!

You said, "The more muscle you have in your body, the higher your metabolism gets!"
Yeah, right. That's the way it's supposed to work alright.

That is a good suggestion. I do try to do some work with weights twice a week - I used to be religious on the Nautilus equipment in another life BK (before kids). I am just mystified (though I know I shouldn't be) that what I used to be able to do (lose 5 pounds in a month) pretty easily is now feeling impossible. My clothes are fitting better and I know I am more toned by being more consistent with the exercise, so that is what I am trying to focus on. While aging has its DISadvantages, one of the advantages is that acceptance comes more readily (as does diminished obsession with one's looks! - self preservation I guess! ) Andie

Good post Bevrs. It is a sad fact of aging. I think you can lose weight but it's very very hard and very very slow. I think about the only thing you can do is exercise and try to build the fat into muscle.

I think that is an excellent question. How do we gain weight when everything we eat goes in and out so fast. I have to admit that I've been dieting since I started being active on this board and I've been following the IBS food plan and doing the hypnosis tapes and exercising for the first time in 30 years. I have lost 19 lbs. but now I've stopped losing and am focusing on building up what I do have. When I was young I weighed a consistant 98lbs. 5 months ago I weighed 54lbs. Now I weigh 35lbs. I don't expect to ever weigh 98lbs again in fact I wouldn't want to. I would like to feel better and look like the weight I do have is in better shape. As you age it just gets so much harder. We take it for granted when we are young. We buy a dress a size too small and don't eat much for a week and we are in the dress and ready to party. Enjoy that yungins because after 50 it's not going to happen again. However, my mom is 90 and she weighs 95lbs. So in your dotage you do start to lose weight again but I don't think you really care. My mom worries alot about being to thin and not being able to eat. We just are so hard to please aren't we? It's all about accepting who we are which for me has been something I've been working on for the last 6 months. I know I'll be much happier when I accept myself for who I am and not the super model I thought I wanted to be. It's just taking me time but I'm getting there. You all,the IBS food plan, and Michaels tapes are helping me a lot.
