If I had a choice, I'd probably either do beauty therapy and have my own little saloon by the beach

The ideal job is having no job at all. Unfortunately, whenever it's a "job," then it ceases to be "ideal." I used to love to sew, especially with my dear mother-in-law. I did the machine work, she did the hand work. We worked well together and loved it. People at the office noticed my clothes and asked if I would sew for them. Okay, great, mom and I had a business. We sewed for people. Very soon it ceased being enjoyable. It became a chore. I gave it up and haven't gone back to it since.

Since then I took up stained glass. Took lots of classes and got pretty good at it. When we moved to the float home in Canada, and had my work hanging in all our windows, everyone up there wanted to commission me to do pieces for them. Fortunately, the government up there prohibited us from making money in Canada, so I was able to politely decline. I don't want to give up my stained glass as I did my sewing.

An "ideal job" is a non-sequitur.

My ideal job would be to be a tenured professor of theatre history/playwriting/directing who directs one show a year at a small liberal arts school (2000-5000 students) in a warm city. How's that for specific!

I LOVE kids. Teaching, babysitting, daycare center, I love them all. Unfortunately you also have to deal with their abusive, neglecting, disinterested parents and that breaks my heart. You can only do so much when that is what they have to go home to. Obviously not all parents are like that, but the minority who are keep me away from doing those jobs.

Yeah, now all I have to do is finish this degree, find such a school with an opening and convince them, out of all the other applicants, that they should hire me.

How about being a tester for Aveda? You get to try out all the products for free and give your opinion. That would be nice eh?

Actually, I have a friend better suited for that. No one knows better than her the various worths of beauty products. She's addicted. But I'd want her extras.

I bet the right job will come along. I'm convinced that when you don't get accepted for a job, there was a reason; like something even better is on the horizon.

Ah, Aveda and Body Shop are the two places my money goes... and not all that frequently. I got a bunch of Aveda stuff for Christmas, so I'm good for awhile!

I don't know, you do sound pretty artistic to me too. It's too bad everyone doesn't live near each other so we could exchange teaching the "things we want to learn" list. I would love to know how to make Roman Shades for example.

The Body Shop? It's usually in the Mall... it's a British store (the one thing that is cheaper in England). Here's a link: www.thebodyshop.com. It seems like there's at least one in Iowa. They have all cruelty free stuff... I really like their make-up.

See! I'm not the only one who thinks you are creative and artistic. I have always marveled at people who can sew. Many have tried to teach me and given up! My daughter wants to learn and I quickly directed her to her paternal grandma.

My mother sent me to sewing camp for a week. I didn't mind learning about the sewing, but the camp was run by some very elderly ladies. They also felt it was important for us to learn what "season" we are and what the appropriate make-up would be for us. And we all had to make horrible floral skirt and top sets. I was a bit too much of a tomboy for them. I wonder what they would have done if an actual boy showed up?

I read your ideal job - wouldn't mind that one myself! I am a drama teacher at a highschool. What are you doing your PHD on?

Oh, the Body shop is also here in OZ... I"m addicted to their vanilla and coconut products.

My PhD is in Performance Studies, the program is actually called "Performance as Public Practice." I specialize in American Feminist Theatre History and Historiography and Non-Western Theatre. I'm planning on writing my dissertation on colonial and post-colonial American women playwrights and directors.

For anybody who's not in theatre who reads this, Performance Studies is an area that encompasses theatre history and dance and anything that people do in public that is performance. So like circuses and demonstrations and so on.

The honest truth is I don't like having a job or having to go to work. I do it only for the £££ ($$$ - translation!) and if I had £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££$$$$$$£££££££ there is no way on earth I'd work any more. I have to tell myself every day that I'm choosing to come to work just for today only, because I want that money, but that tomorrow is a whole new day and whole new possibility. If I didn't, I'd go mad!

There are lots of things I love or have loved to do in my life - but would I like to make them my career? NO WAY, because then you're HAVING to do stuff according to someone else's tune, deadlines to meet and so on. The great thing about doing what you love to do is the freedom to choose how much, when or how you do it or love it that day.
