Janey, I saw the film yesterday afternoon. If I am honest with you, I was disappointed. Of course, they always show the trailers, which may or may not make the movie look better than it really is.
I can't answer the question about how closely the movie stuck to the book, because I didn't read it, but I can tell you for a Scorsese (brilliant man) film, it did not deliver. It was still a good flick, but not nearly as good as his others. It just lacked something...can't quite put my finger on it.
Something I did notice, was how closely it resembled the Russell Crowe flick, "A Beautiful Mind." Now, that was an excellent movie! Although, that was based on a true story.
Everyone is crazy and plotting but you, but you are the crazy one. I did like the surprise ending, but I had already figured it out mid-movie, because of the Russell Crowe film.
I have to say Leo was amazing. Oscar winning performance!
All in all, it was worth a matinee, and it was a fun afternoon.

Geri,
Thanks for the review. I didn't want to say anything about the surprise ending because I didn't want to spoil it for you. I have read reviews and there are many that say the same thing that you have said.
To me the previews did not really show the story that I had read. While reading the book the ending was a complete surprise which made the book great. I felt that going to the movie knowing the surprise might ruin the movie for me.
Maybe I will wait and rent it.

Jeez, I didn't think to put SPOILER on my post. I hope I did not ruin it for anyone. Sorry!
Yeah Janey, it's a renter or a matinee.

Maybe I'm wierd, but I really liked it. Although I'm a huge Leonardo DeCaprio fan! I thought it was pretty entertaining!

Why were you thrown off by the ending? He was the "crazy" one and he went in and out of psychosis. The doctors were trying to make him face what he had done, and he could not, hence the back and forth with the psychosis.
The story plot was ripped off from the movie, "A Beautiful Mind", with Russell Crowe, which was a much better flick.

I think the story lines were different.
In A Beautiful Mind the main character suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and even though he suffered from delusions, the movie was about how his illness affected those around him.
In Shutter Island the guy is suffering from delusions which were brought on by the trauma of his wife killing his children and then he killed her. He could not take the guilt of what had happened which caused him to mentally snap. Before this happened he was a normal functioning person.
