Does IBS go in remission?

I was diagnosed with IBS a bit over 2 years ago and have eaten great and followed the diet almost perfectly. A few months ago I ran out of the fiber and found I actually had a BM EVERY day instead of 5 to 7 days and the pain and cramping are all gone. I am eating fiber foods and still no problems. I refuse to go back to dairy and red meat as I also have a heart condition. Has any one else every heard of IBS going away or in remission?

I don't know if it is remission but IBS can get better and worse. But it is not gone for good. I know my own goes through cycles of really good and really bad. I still follow the diet when my tum is behaving simply because the consequences of eating bad are just too horrific and painful.

For example, I was diagnosed at 18 and was really sick for 2 or 3 years. Then through university I was fine and I cheated with some foods but never went back to dairy or red meat and pork. I was fine for almost 5 years!! I watched what I ate, but only had the occasional attack. In 2006 I was wretchedly ill. I couldn't eat anything even if it was safe - STRESS!!!! It took me 2 years, hypnosis and a new job to stablize, in the process I lost 45 lbs. Now I'm much better, what I would consider stable, and happy. But I am still watching the diet very carefully and trying not to stress, and exercise regularly.

You may be going through a really good period and if so, HURRAY!!!

Hope this helps.

I was going to ask a similar question tonight. I have gone the last four months without any problems until tonight. I was eating healthy, taking my fiber and vitamins, pretty low stress currently (the biggest stressful thing was last week was realizing that I had maxed out on vacation this month and had to take Friday off or lose the day- rough I know) and then tonight suddenly I am dealing with an upset system- went from sudden cramping to C followed by a severe case of D. The system is now unhappy, bloated and just miserable for the last three hours.

In reviewing my food/symptom diary it seems that over the last eighteen months that about every 4-5 months I am having a flare-up like this and things go fine in between. The last flare-up was due to the lovely stomach flu that was going around at work in March.

Compared to four years ago when I was having an attack every 3-5 days I am a bit happier but I am just concerned that when the attacks happen now the pain is much more severe and inconsistent with anything that is going on and no specific trigger. The bigger concern is that when these attacks now take place I lose 5-10 pounds and take almost two-three months to gain the weight back. Thanks in advance

Thanks to both of you. If it's remission or whatever, it's great to feel almost normal again. Hopefully it lasts a long time.
