Has anyone tried Rifaximin aka Xifaxan? It is an antibiotic. My dr. prescribed it. You take one per day for 10 days and the effects are said to last up to 10 weeks. I have taken 3 pills so far and I am no longer plagued with D. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will give me weeks of relief.

I have heard of a certain antibiotic doing this very thing but I have never tried it. Keep me updated on how it turns out for you and if you see any side effects from it. Good Luck with this.

This is my sixth day on Rifaximin and I have to say that I have not had any D, pain or side effects. So far, I am encouraged. The effects have been said to last 10 weeks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hopefully it will do the trick. Will you be taking probiotics at all? Keep in touch...........

I took rifaximin for 8 days then came down with bronchitis and the dr. put me on amoxicillin for 10 days. After I really started to feel like myself I realized that I don't have any intestinal pain after I eat, no matter what I eat. I still have IBS-D if I make bad food choices, but all in all I feel much better. My insurance co. would not pay for rifaximin but it was only $58.00 and I decided it was worth a try. The effects are supposed to last 10 weeks or so. If my symptoms return, I think I might try it again. I really am not sure if it was the rifaximin or the amoxicillin or a combo of both, but I do feel better.
I have also been on Welcholol for a year and it really helps me.

I was wondering if you were taking the antibiotics strictly for the ibs or for an infection? I know some antibiotics can cause diarreha/constipation for me.

I was taking Rifaximin (the generic name is Xifaxan)strictly for IBS. It did not cause any diarreha/constipation.
