I posted this am. Years ago my GI Dr. diagnosed me IBS. I paid no attention and did as I pleased. Had bouts of diarrhea but nothing like I've experienced as of late. I must now make a life change and am happy to as long as I can feel better. I'm following closly Heathers 1st few days of calming stomach down. My oatmeal triggered me this morning and I was in tears. Had diarrhea since Thursday. Am on Belladonna & Phenobarb per GI DR. Also take Aciphex for Acid Reflux.
Just had plain bagel and it seems to be okay. Lots of Cham. tea. It's debilitating and I'm filled with anxiety.
Does it take a few days to calm stomach?
O

I use Benefiber or a generic equivelent. If I recall, Fibersure is mainly inulin, which isn't exactly a trigger for me, but it's rough.

Oatmeal is a trigger food for some. It's a bit of trial and error sometimes at first, but it'll get better with time.

Wow.
When your belly is mad at you, it really does take a few days to get it to calm down. At least, mine does.

And - everyone is different. What is a trigger for one person, may not be a trigger for someone else. Did you put anything in your oatmeal that may have upset you? Maybe cinnamon, or fruit, or milk? Was it "pure" oatmeal, or one of those quickie packets?

It may really help you to keep a food diary for a week or two, just to help you determine what your triggers are. I did that when I was first diagnosed. I wrote down EVERYTHING that I put in my mouth, then how I felt over the next hour or two after I ate it.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply. I made McCann's quick cooking Irish Oatmeal with Silk (Soymilk). Been using it for years. Though it triggered me. You are right about the diary. I'll begin this morning. Just had a small amt white rice for bkfst. Not sure if I'll react or not.

I also have psoriatic arthris. My skin is not affected but I suffer with lots of stiffness. Hard to get up in the am and with IBS feel like crawling under covers and never getting up.
However I have a Golden Ret. who needs to be walked, loved etc.

OH! My GI Dr. insists I use fiber. So far I believe the Benefiber is too harsh. Is that possible? I only take 1/2 tsp. and a few days later I can't get out of the BR. I'm real confused about the fiber and what to use and how much as you can tell.

Hey Barbara.

Fibersure helped me moderately, until I got to 9 grams a day. Then it caused horrible bloating and gas. No diarrhea, but man . . .
In switching to Acacia Fiber, I feel "OH SO MUCH" better. The Tummy Tamer's have helped as well. Individually, they each improved my symptoms. Together, they've pretty much cleared them up completely. Unless I over do it on the insoluble fiber w/ my diet (generally overdo it w/ berries, pineapple & melon, or a recently discovered trigger=instant oatmeal).
Cutting out dairy have done wonders, as well!!!
Lots of tea, when recovering from a bout of D. Yogi Stomach Ease, Peppermint (Heather's or Organic from the grocery) & Fennel.
Good Luck & welcome to the path of regularity!

Yes. I highly recommend acacia fiber. It dissolves clear in water, and is tasteless. Also is wonderful for cooking. You can add it to anything.

Glad your doing better!!
