Can you help me? I know this is long but my situation is a little different…

I discovered this site while searching for answers to my as yet undiagnosed condition. I am 47 with chronic D, weight loss (20% body weight), anxiety and tremors (I can barely type this), fear of eating, sweats and abdominal distress (cramps, dull pain, gas, bloating) after eating. I have not had constipation typical of IBS. This all started this fall, about 8 months after a Nissen Fundoplication to repair an extreme hiatal hernia in Des Moines. Could this trigger IBS?

I saw a letter from Deborah Naert here about the fennel tea. I hope she sees this and lets me know more about her situation (I could have written the first part of that letter!). I am desperate for answers. I am curious about others who have had this procedure and if they are having digestive problems too.

I HAVE ordered the big kahuna kit, even though I haven't been diagnosed IBS yet. I have had multiple invasive tests (abdominal CT, Upper gastroscopy, colonoscopy, pillcam, barium swallow intestinal xray, stool tests, misc. blood tests, etc.), all came back normal. My GI was looking for adhesions as a result of the surgery. He doesn't seem to offer any other explanations. The tests were torture! and still I have no answers. He did not mention IBS at all.

I am too weak and afraid to leave the house. I can't take care of my family (husband and 14 year old daughter) or my house. I have been off work for 5 weeks now. I am afraid I will lose my husband of 24 years (he's doing everything). He doesn't understand. I don't understand.

I am seeing a new GI on Tuesday and have an appointment at Mayo the following week (although I may cancel it for now until the new doc can help me). We can't afford a 5 day trip right now.

I have followed the getting started ideas for the last two days and am waiting for my kit to arrive. I started doing hatha yoga again (after 25 years). I have had more normal stools. I still wake in a sweat and in pain until I have a BM. Then I feel anxiety and shake all day. I am weak and tired no matter what I eat or how long I sleep. I can force myself to eat some but NEVER FEEL HUNGRY. I can usually eat a more normal small meal in the evening. My vision seems to be involved, is that weird? Do I need to see a phychiatrist who specializes in digestive disorders? What's your best advice for someone like me? Are there degrees of IBS? Can you help me?

B Brussie,
I am sorry to hear you are going through so much. I don't know if my info will help you, but I will share what I know. Both my nephew and neice have had Nissen Fundoplications for extreme GERD and both have severe motility disorders. My Nephew however as a result of his Fundoplication has what they call "Dumping", where all of his food dumps into his intestinal track at once. His system can't handle this and he gets the sweats and weakness. As a result, my sister would have to put uncooked cornstarch mixed with water into his feeding tube that was in his belly after he ate. He ate some food by mouth, but because of the pain of his reflux/GERD, it wasn't enough, so he was supplemented at night through his tube. Anyways, the cornstarch would slow down the "dumping", and then he wouldn't get this huge rush through his body and basically wanna pass out like before. Although his motility disorders will be with him for life, he is now doing much better and his health is well managed. He does not have his feeding tube anymore, nor do they use the cornstarch, but instead they have fully cut out sugar in his diet, and wow, what a difference that made for his tummy. He is a vibrant 10yr old now, and doesn't mind a bit not having sugar, because he knows how much better he feels. We also make sure he gets something special if he is at a party of there is dessert - there is something always avail for him.
I hope this is helpful in some way, I could really tell you were having a hard time - I can relate. I hope you will find some relief soon.

I am not sure if this will help but I know my problems started after I had a hysterectomy ! I was told I had a prolapsed uterus and could live with it or have it removed.
The pain I guess was bareable but I decided after 3 times of hemoraging to have it removed!
When they went in to remove they found I had had a huge cyst on one of my ovaries that had burst so my removing everything we had hoped everthing would be fine.
I was good for around 6 months then I started with constipation………… This was hard as I was so used to NORMAL BM every day.
For 12 months I struggled had sweats pain cramps u name it I had it even with ibs c just like d, days were spent in the bathroom : unable to go out: Mornings were the worse. I am from the UK now live in the States my hubby travels a lot so even getting up to take my daughter to school was a killer. Not having family close by was sooooooooooooo hard. I understand it's hard for our hubbys but I am sure he is worried about you and at the least feels helpless to help u. This is the hardest part for our partners all of a sudden you're not the same person u were. This condition does take over and it's hard to get through the day without thinking about it and the hours spent wondering how to get control. After all that's what we're looking for to bring it to a level where we have control…………….. Just to be OK for a few hours at a time which result in bringing back our lives?

I don't think for a moment your weird this is a hell of a condition to come to terms with and to get to the stage where you function normally takes hard work: Unfortunately the pain and stress that goes hand in hand with the condition also takes us time to bring it to a level where we function normally again. Or to a level where were OK to face the world and it does at times take small steps!!

I too went through every test there was and each time they came back normal. Drs would look at me like it must all be in your mind! And I have told them more than once. PLUS I have SCREECHED at them… Look I am not crazy this is what I am going through yet none of them seem able to help. I was so ill at one time I felt like jumping off San Francisco Bay bridge LOL : {Maybe I should not say that} Not that I would but I never thought there was a way to end the condition. The sad fact is we go to Drs for help and they are clueless at times on this condition. Eat fiber lots of this that and the other that are all triggers!! I became so disillusioned with them I stopped going.

I am sure coming here you will find so much information that will help you: I have been a reader here for going on 2 years! I am finally in control, ibs does not control me. I have tried everything under the sun to get to this stage and you 2 will have good days and bad. I do feel though coming here was a Godsend. I use Heathers Acacia Tummy Fiber and I have found it does help. Not only help the condition but internally and emotionally I feel 100% better.
I firmly believe surgery can start a host of other problems so take each day as it comes, read read read on this forum & you will find the best information there is in helping u with ibs d……………………… I understand u have not been undiagnosed…………………but it is a start to helping u.
Today you feel at a loss it's a terrible feeling I know believe me I know but walk slowly and I am sure the people here and the information u will learn will guide you through and you will get there !!!

Sending out prayers to you : Check back in and let us know how you're doing!

Take care
