Question on Lowering Cholesterol, Use of Acacia for son (12)

Hi, Not sure if I should post this here or in the diet section, so please forgive the newbie. 
My oldest son (12) has always been overweight and we've been monitoring his weight, cholesterol, glucose, thyroid, etc, etc since birth. His latest round of bloodwork has shown a LDL cholesterol level of about 215!  It's never been anywhere near that high, my kid exercises a lot, eats fairly well for a kid his age, but we obviously need to change some things and get his LDL headed in the other direction. His doctor recommended some diet changes, which we'll do right away, but I've been on the net looking for other suggestions as well. I read that soluble fiber helps to lower LDL...is Heather's Tummy Fiber safe for a kid his age to use? If so, should the doseage be any different? Any other considerations in regards to using it to help him? (I use it for my IBS-D so I definitely have it handy.)
I'd appreciate any help/info anyone might have on the acacia fiber or ways to help lower his cholesterol (naturally).
