Can anyone recommend a doctor in northern Virginia or the surrounding area that has helped them with their IBS problems? I am finally ready to complain about what I think is IBS-C but need a diagnosis. I plan to start with my PCP, but it would be great to know if there's anyone out there that is up to date on diagnosing & treating IBS.

I have a decent doc, but he's in Olney, MD-- might be too far for your needs. Dr. Arthur Schoengold (301) 279-0380. He's a PCP and GI doc, and if you have Blue Cross, he's probably on your list.

Whatever doc you choose, have him do an upper and lower GI (barium x-ray) and a colonoscopy with biopsies. Those 2 tests will steer you in the right direction, if there is any irritable bowel disease, diverticulitis, etc.

If they come back clear and there's no IBD, you'll know you went for an aggressive approach to finding out what's wrong. At least the colonoscopy (which you can have asleep) will satisfy the need for a sigmoidoscopy (which is awake). A colonoscopy is the quicker recovery ,IMHO.

Good luck!

Erin,

I remember seeing a list of doctors (by state) somewhere on this website. You may want to do a search and if you can't find, ask Heather where to find. Also, I suggest that you go directly to a GI or colon/rectal specialist. All your primary doc will do is to refer you on....especially if you have never had any tests done to date. They usually want to rule everything out (by giving tests) before giving an IBS diagnosis. Good luck

I'm in Loudoun. I go to Dr. Wasan at Gastrologists & Associates in Leeseburg. If you'd like the number let me know. He was great and I know a couple of other people I work with that saw him as well and have been happy with the results.

Yes, that's too far for me, but thanks for the advice. I've already had a colonoscopy this past spring and nothing significant was found to be wrong, so I at least have that out of the way.

I see a Dr. Sanjeev Wasan, a gastroenterologist, in Leesburg that takes my insurance on the insurance web site. I guess that is it, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Congrats on the clear colonoscopy! Yeah, those invasive tests are a bear. It's so good to have it out of the way. I hope you find a great doc!

Yes, that's him! Just make sure that if he goes in to do a colonoscopy that he does an upper endoscope at the same time. My thought is kill 2 birds with one stone.

Just saw you already had a colonscopy. That's good. You'll also need to be tested for celiacs, and I would have your gallbladder checked, too. I didn't have typical symptoms, but mine wasn't working and just had it removed. Feel so much better already.
