Glad to hear you're home and starting to feel better. I think Sat. was the worst for me. I couldn't hold anything down and nothing like vomiting after having surgery on your stomach. Thinking it was from the meds. I'm feeling a lot better today. Eating toast and my cream of rice cereal and broth. Here's to some mashed tators and stuffing on Thursday.

Hello -- glad I found this thread. I'm scheduled for gallbladdery surgery on Dec. 18. No gallstones on tests, but they ruled out everything else and my very respected surgeon (who did major abdominal surgery on a good friend, but only after trying everything else to avoid it) feels strongly the middle-of-the-night pain attacks, nausea, etc. are classic symptoms. My GP agrees.
I do have IBS pretty bad too, so I'm no stranger to having bad cramps & diarrhea if I eat very fat food. I find I can have a little chocolate or whatever, a modest portion, but that's about it.
So I'm wondering about you who were contributing on this thread -- how are you all doing post-surgery? Any tips on dealing with the post-surgery pain, diarrhea and other problems? What about getting ready for the surgery in the days leading up to it?
Any tips would be most helpful. Thanks!!

woops -- one other thing.
part of my IBS issue is that when I've had a bad attack of the runs, it's really hard to eat the healthiest food of all -- vegetables and fruit, unless it's the sort with very little fiber and it's cooked. Heather's recipes and tips really help on this score.
did any of you who had gallbladder surgery find your IBS symptoms getting any better in this respect? I hope to eventually resume eating lean chicken and low-fat dairy, etc., but I also would love to eat more vegetables, more consistently!! Thanks again

I finally got a statement from my insurance company - my HIDA scan was just under $1,000.00. It may cost different amounts depending on where you go, but this will give you an idea of how much it would be. Pretty expensive if you don't have insurance, I'm afraid.

Leading up to my surgery I tried to walk a lot to keep my respiratory system in good shape - it helps with recovery and effects from anesthesia. After surgery I was uncomfortable for about a week until the gas/air that is pumped into the abdominal area during the surgery dissipates. It's nothing that can't be dealt with, especially if you've had lots of pain already with IBS and gallbladder related problems. I'm slowly getting my appetite back and haven't tried too much yet but overall I'm feeling much better. I've had a couple of days with nausea, but nothing like before. I may have overdone it a little those days. It's hard for me to remember that I had surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago! I've had a couple days with D right after surgery mostly, but for the most part my BM's are fairly normal, although I have been taking acacia all along. So that probably helps. The constant pain and nausea that I had before is gone, though, and I'm not totally scared to eat anymore. Before I didn't know what would trigger my ill feelings, so I was hardly eating at all. Now I can even eat chocolate (small amounts) and not worry! Life is good! My doc said it takes up to 6 weeks for the body to adjust to not having a gallbladder and to add fats back in slowly. He said if I overdid the fats it could "go right through you". So be aware of that afterwards. I still have some GI issues and probably always will, but I feel so much better and am so glad I had the surgery. Good luck - hope this helps!

Did you get the HIDA scan already? you said you were afraid. Well I had it done 2005 and it wasnt that big of a deal. Heck I was scared as hell my hubby even came in room. The nurse/atendee was nice. Basically, they give you the radio active solution and then you have to just lay there very still on a table and this machine comes down to take pictures. Basically they are just trying to see how your gallblatter dumps foods or if they can see anything else. Good test to rule out nothing else is going one.Good luck and try not to be scared it wasnt really that bad. But my anxiety of the unknown made me more scared.
