Hey everyone! I've been off the boards for several weeks, so much going on in my personal life. But I've missed you all

I had surgery three years ago for a herniated disk; I was 25 at the time. Too young for that sort of thing. I thought everything was great, but now I've had two "relapses" since then where my low back hurts and stiffens and the sciatica gets so bad I can't work a full day. So I'm currently on short term disability (SO lucky for that) while I try to get better enough to go back to full time. I decided to try chiropractic; it's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

It was SO WEIRD to have a doctor examine me and say "This is what's wrong, and I can fix it." WOW! So hopefully my back problems will start to go away. After my exam, he said that the abnormalities he sees in my spine can cause symtoms like migraines, fatigue, depression, constipation, irritable bowel... say no more!! I'm sold. He said he has a few IBS patients, and was really interested in what I had to say about this site, my diet, etc. I hope he shares it with some of his patients.

So, since IBS is clearly a brain-gut disfunction, I'm surprised that I haven't heard much about using chiropractic to treat IBS. Has anyone tried it?

I've been off the pill for 9 weeks now, and still haven't ovulated (I do tests every day!). But today I started bleeding. What's up with that??? I just want to get pregnant, darn it!!

So, that's what's new with me. Thanks for reading

I haven't seen much relating IBS and chiropractor services, but I have seen a link with a back condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Basically it's arthritis of the back which can also cause IBS symptoms and it's very treatable. Maybe you want to ask your doctor about this since you have back problems as well as IBS. Even if you don't have this condition, at least there is some hope for treating back problems to resolve IBS problems.

Some info: http://www.everydiet.org/low_starch_diet.htm

Hope you start feeling better soon,

Hey, Lisa Marie:

It took me about 100 days to ovulate when I went off the pill, and even then I had "weak ovulation" for the first few months. Hopefully that won't be the case for you, but just don't be too worried if it is.

Also, it IS possible to ovulate and never get a positive OPK. If you are having bright red bleeding, I'd guess that you probably did ovulate.

Good luck!

If you're really concerned about ovulation you should talk to your Dr. I went off the pill in May '06 and never had a period again until I went to a fertility specialist in Nov. '06. It's different for every woman. Most doctors say it can take up to 6 months for your body to get back on track. Mine never did, though. And you can have a period and not ovulate. And OPKs can be wrong. You might ovulate w/o them detecting it. So, give it time. It can take your body a while to readjust after bc. And if you're really concerned talk to your Dr.

Hi Lisa! Glad to see the update on you and that you have some answers now. I see a chiropractor once in a while when I have back pain, but have never really used it specifically for IBS. That would be wonderful if it did. {{{hugs}}}

100 days.... well, i'm not quite there yet, which keeps me thinking positively. when i finally hit the 3 month mark, i might get more anxious, which i know won't help my situation. Grrr...

Bright red? I remember now that the bleeding was more brownish. (Sorry if TMI) Does that mean anything? It's been almost two weeks since my period, and still no positive ovulation tests. i'm trying to be patient...

Thanks, Mary, I know you're well versed in this. I did call the reproductive endocrinology department at Kaiser, and she was very helpful. She said to give it a good 6 months before coming in since appts with their docs are VERY expensive ($200-300!). I guess I'm more concerned because of my history with having an ovarian cyst removed about 8 years ago. It was the size of a grapefruit! They did reconstructive surgery on that ovary, but said it wouldn't affect my ability to conceive later on. Hopefully that's true, but maybe that's also contributing to my delay. So, I'm going to give it until February; if I don't see any changes by then, I'm making an appt!

Have any of you tried ovulation tests and not have them work for you? I mean, you were ovulating normally but the tests didn't detect it?

very interesting.... thanks, kat!!

I am finally starting to feel better. Getting used to the chiropractic adjustments was harder than i thought! I went through phases of migraines, soreness, even some mild depression. I seem to be taking the adjustments a lot easier now. Now if the darn sciatica would just go away...!

Yes, my first couple of "periods" were brown and very light. It was my doctor's opinion at the time (and I agree) that I hadn't started ovulating again yet.

As far as I can tell, my first "real" ovulation came at 100+ days post-pill. My periods were kind of wacky at first but got increasingly more regular. We didn't start TTC until about 1.5 years after I stopped the pill, but once we did start, I got pregnant the second month.

Hope that helps! Good luck! I know it's hard, but try to be patient.

WOW. Thank you so much for sharing that. "Brown and light" is exactly what mine was like. I just hope it doesn't take 1.5 years to get pregnant! I wish I had known this was going to take so long; I would have gone off the pill a year ago!

Thanks for the advice! I'm trying so hard to be patient, but it's difficult when so many people around me are getting pregnant and having babies. After all the health problems I have suffered from during the last ten years or so, it would just be nice for something to go RIGHT for a change, you know?

Thanks again!

Glad to hear you are feeling better!

I always had good luck with the opks. Be sure you are testing the same time everyday, early to mid afternoon is best and be sure not to drink a LOT of water the few hours before as they can dilute your urine and give a false negative as well.

My periods were always text book 28 day cycles. When I went off the pill the first time after being on it for about 16 years, I got my period right away and ovulated exactly 14 days later.

Since I was in the hospital and they found all these blood clots, I was forced off it again. This time, it took 5 weeks for AF to even show up and although I was not testing, I don't think I ovulated at all.

Stick with it, have sex every other day mid cycle and be sure you are not using any sort of lube as most of them, even the ones that don't have a spermicide can impede the little swimmers!!!!! If you find you need some help there, look up Pre Seed!

My IBS of 11 years was 70% cured with my first adjustment with the chiropracter; as was much of the anxiety that came with it. I have been going 3X a week for the last 2 years and am now the nutritionist at his practice. It has been an entirely wonderful experience. Good luck!!! :-)

That's great to hear! Thank you for sharing. I'm slowly starting to feel better, but it's only been 6 weeks or so of treatment, so I still have a ways to go.

Finally - more than three months since I stopped BC, and last week for the first time I saw a faint "test" band on my OPK!! Obviously it's not positive, but that band has slowly been getting a little darker each day since. YAY!!! My ovaries work!! I can definitely tell my hormones are doing something - my skin broke out over the weekend and my IBS has been acting up lately, painful gas and bloating plus some constipation. I've had to take my dicyclomine every day for the last 4 or 5 days; I hadn't taken any of that in many many months!!

So, I guess this means I'm finally in the home stretch - hopefully I'll be pregnant by the end of the year!!! I'm so excited and yet so totally freaked out and scared at the same time!!
