29% of Americans have never done this because they simply don't know how? What is it?

As soon as I read it I knew you were right. You should have seen Tory and I when we bought our first car, after we were married. Neither one of us knew how to drive it. Tory drove it home and I don't know how many times he grinded the gears. I had the worse time backing out of a parking spot that was on an incline. I must have stalled the car 4 times before my sil drove it back home. I loved that car. Maybe for the memories we had from it.

Yeah, it still a mystery to my sister why her clutch was burned out!! **devilish grin** I never drove a stick after that.... she still does not know it was me and that was 18 years ago!!

Shell - you're so funny!!
All my cars (3 total) have been stick shifts. Wouldn't want one without it. Once my car stalled on a ramp coming off the freeway during rush hour traffic - not fun!! I popped the clutch and started it back up while coasting down this ramp, and ever since then have stayed with the trusty clutch. They've also saved me a few times when starters/batteries died etc.
But, learning how to drive a stick is funny!

Yeah, stick shifts are fun. My first car was a manual (my dad said that I should know how to drive them just in case, which was very smart on his part....there's been several times since when it's come in handy), and I would practice driving around the neighborhood very slowly...but I never had to back up, since we had a circular driveway. Then one day, I told my dad that I was going to go practice, and he came out to watch me take off....and for some reason, I had to reverse, which I had never done before....and WHAM! In a matter of seconds, I had pressed down on the gas, and couldnt figure out how to stop backing up and rammed right into our travel trailer, and completely dented it all in. Not much damage to the car, but sure scared me senseless! And you should have seen my dad's face, as he saw the whole thing from the front porch!

Aw man! I had so many dirty answers for this one. LOL
I also fall in that catagory, but my friends assure me that it's the same as changing gears on a motorcycle and that I should have no problem with it. As soon as one of them gets a stick, they're gonna show me how.

I can just imagine your dad's face. I did that the first time I drove a car forward. I didn't hit anything but it scared me and I didn't know how to stop. I was with a few friends driving in the church parking lot. He was not qualified to let any of us drive. I don't even think we were 16 yet. No wonder I was almost 18 before I got my license. I used to practice driving up and down our driveway. Still not great with driving straight in reverse on a long driveway.
