I'm going to Dominican Republic and my doctor prescribed me some anti-malarial drugs Malarone. The side effects seem to be milder than other malaria pills but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with them. Did they affect your IBS in any way?
Thanks,

I'm on the anti-malarial pill Plaquenil as long-term treatment for my lupus. I think they can usually cause stomach cramping. I was told to take it after a meal - and a real meal, not just some toast or a little snack. So, I take it after breakfast and dinner. The pharmacist also told me to take it with lots of water, so I take it with about 16 oz of water. I didn't have an GI problems other than a little nausea the first week, but this went away with some ginger tea.
When are you leaving for your trip?

I'm leaving Saturday morning. The pills I'm taking are more short-term than Plaquenil and say they have less side effects so hopefully I'll be ok. I'm quite stable now, so I'm sure taking them after a safe meal is fine. I take one pill per day, starting 2 days before I leave, and continuing 5 days after I come back. I think I'll bring some ginger tablets with me incase of nausea.
Thanks for the info,

I used to take Quinine when I was over seas, years ago. It tore me up and caused severe d. Hopefully what you are taking will be so much better then what was given by the military.

Yeah I looked at other drugs and the one I'm taking has much less side effects than the one you were on. Sorry you had to go through that! I read that in some areas malaria has become resistant to certain drugs and that's probably the case for where you were. They had to have stronger drugs for people in those areas. In Dominican Republic I guess 'regular' malaria pills are enough.

My ex was cabin crew and he had to take malarone when he did flights to africa and it usually gave him D and nausea and he doesn't have IBS! The nausea was better if he had plenty to eat before taking them. They might not affect you, after all we're all different. Will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hmm.. I took my first pill this morning after a safe meal, and so far so good. I also took a ginger tablet since people said nausea was a common symptom. So far I don't feel anything at all, hopefully it stays that way. Considering I'm stressed with school (presentations eek), and sleep-deprived, I think my stomach will be ok with this medication. I have to take it daily, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.. but I'm prepared with Imodium and ginger tablets.
