Short story- I got engaged over christmas to Jennifer Nichols, my girlfriend of 6 years. For all ya'll hopeless romantics, the whole story is below.

Well, last school semester ended kinda rough. Jen's father (joe nichols) passed away right after thanksgiving break. He was admitted to ICU with a severe case of septic infection and was taken off life support 4 days later. We rented a car and drove home for a week to be with our family and attend to funeral services. The week after our return to campus, Public Safety came to the pistol range during my range duty, illegally detained and interogated me about a stolen snowmobile, an incident I have no involvement in. That legal battle is on going.
Anyway, Jen and I had been talking since august and we both felt that it was time to make a desicion about our relationship. Over thanksgiving break I talked to my parents and they both agreed that the time was right to consider proposing. I planned on asking Joe's permission to propose to Jen, I never got that chance. While down home I had a chance to talk with Jen's grandpa and he gave his blessing to us but maintained that we still need to talk with Jen's mom (jeannette). We decided to wait til christmas to talk to Jeanette, due to the stress she was under at the time.
We got back home on dec 22nd for christmas break and talked to Jeannette the next morning. She was a little surprised but agreed that it was the right time.
Jen is allergic to metal jewlery and neither of us wear jewlery because we are constantly around moving machinery, I'm an engineering student, Jen is studying fire management. We decided to get some sort of non-traditional engagement gifts for each other. That weekend we got home I found a matching set of Buck 110 folding knives and took them to jewler to be engraved. With out initials and the date I proposed.

On december 27th I picked Jen up from her house for what she thought was a little photo shoot so our parents would have current pictures of us. We went to the city beach on Lake Huron and I propsed with a rose in one hand and the engraved knife in the other. I think she got a little teary eyed but she maintains it was beach sand in her eye...I'm not quite sure I beleive that. She wears the knife and sheath everywear (even to church) and sleeps with it under her pillow.
Alittle history about us, we met at church in 7th grade and became instant friends. Our friendship became something more around christmas of freshman year in high school and had continued ever since. By chance, we ended up at the same university, we purposely did not talk about college our senior year because we did not want to influence each others choice of college. We both love the outdoors. I'm 21 and Jen is 20.
We are planning a small wedding for May 7th, 2007 at sturgeon valley gorge in michigan's upper peninsula.

What a wonderful story. Thanks so much for sharing with us-- I too had a special knife I slept with under my pillow back in the day (ok that might me a little weird for most but you know what I mean!). Long story short, i get it.

Congrats to you both, and thanks for the lovely picture!

Congratulations! May you have a long and blissful marriage!
I have to say that you are a couple after my own heart. My husband presented me with a katana (real folded steel, not a wall-hanger) when he proposed, and I received the matching wakizashi and tanto as wedding gifts from him.
