I started doing my Masters in September this year, and applied for tons of Teaching Assistant positions but didn't get any. I got a call 2 weeks ago saying "OK you're the TA for this class now, and you're teaching a lab tomorrow morning. And by the way, it's in FRENCH!"

So Thursday mornings at 8:00am sharp, I start teaching a computer science lab/tutorial in French for 2 hours. I can't imagine teaching everyday all week as some of you do, with IBS. Even though I'm stable, I'm having problems because of this 2 hour lab. The stress of knowing I can't leave, the fact that it's so early in the morning, plus I can't speak French very well, all make my stomach churn.

I'm doing ok, it's getting better every week, and my last one is on November 30th so at least it was short-term. I just can't imagine the strength needed to be a full-time teacher as some of you are. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Kat. It is tough sometimes, especially when you're not feeling well. There are definitely times that I don't feel up to the task...like at 5:30 every morning!

Good luck with your position et le français! C'est difficile pour moi aussi parce que je suis prof de français et espagnol. Bof! Easy to get mixed up!

Thanks! It is hard. But I have older kids so it's easy to run to the restroom than when you have little ones. It has been a bit trying these last few weeks being pregnant and dealing with IBS. Luckily the IBS has been better and only the pregnancy symptoms have taken their toll!

Thanks hon. I'm an ex-teacher - I'm raising my babies now, but I taught grades 7 - 13 before that. Can you imagine leaving a classroom of grade 7's for an attack???? NOT an option!!! I used to not eat anything but rice till I got home. It left me tired and starved for energy. I didn't really get Heather's diet till AFTER.

Really - if you're teaching in a college or university level, I'm sure it would be fine for you to slip out for 2 minutes. I did that often - when the class I was teaching was well behaved enough.

Way to go!
BTW - what college or university are you at? I went to Laurier, hubby Waterloo, brother Guelph.

I can't imagine teaching younger kids and feeling so trapped.

I could potentially leave in the middle of an attack, but I don't tend to have bad attacks anymore. Mainly it's gas or stomach noises that make me a little nervous.

I'm at the University of Ottawa. I'm glad I had the option of staying home for university, that took a lot of the stress out of it.

I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with your IBS without this knowledge we've got from Heather. I wouldn't have had the courage to teach unless I was stable as I am now.

Ok wow, I admire the teaching with IBS and pregnancy on top of it!

Good to hear the IBS symptoms are better during the pregnancy.

LOL C'est tres bien!

I actually mix English and French since I don't know a lot of the computer terms. So far none of the students have complained. I think they're just thankful I can answer their questions, regardless of what language it comes out as.

That's a serious YIKES!

Luckily this fall, amazingly enough considering I'm going through a divorce and teaching French for the first time, an hour away from home...I've had very little IBS trouble. My body knows well enough to hold it though.

Luckily I'm elementary so if I can, I sneak out in between classes, which are only 1/2 hour. i've only needed to do 2 or 3 emergency runs this year. AND I've been drinking a ton of coffee. Go figure. i'll take it. Not too much C or D this year.

Keep on keepin' on...
