Anyone with severe constipation problems?

I've had a great deal of difficulty with constipation for over two years now, and at times it's rather nightmarish. I've had a few basic blood tests done but am not fully confident in the ability of any (very expensive) doctor to be able to tell me what's wrong with me. I have been reading up on the Internet on all kinds of causes of constipation and treatments, and after many, many hours on the Internet I can't say that I don't have IBS.

To abet my research I was hoping I could compare symptoms with someone else who is confident they have IBS-C?

One thing that gets me is all this language of IBS "attacks." While I can say that my guts seems to crawl around a little bit after I eat something, I never get anything that I would call an "attack" of abdominal discomfort. Rather it's the case that my colon simply doesn't move very much at all, in addition to exhibiting a great deal of sensitivity(discomfort, dull pressure, but rerely pain) to fecal matter that accumulates/stores there.

So is there anyone out there with IBS-C that gets attacks? Is it even reasonable to assume that I have IBS?

Hello and welcome! I used to be a long time C'er! I spent about 15 of my 36 years constipated! My tummy almost always hurt, not like piercing, doubling over cramps, more like achy and bloated-some days it hurt more than others but I didn't necessarily have "attacks" as some people refer to them here.

They now think I have crohns and I've gone from C to total D-huge change for me! I now know what they mean by attacks! My tummy will all the sudden go gurlge and cramp, like double youover cramp and I RUN, not walk, run to the nearest bathroom for an explosive and very painful bout of D. This happens 5-15 times a day now.

A few easier things to help with C, WATER, LOTS of water! The longer that stool stays in, the drier it gets, the harder it is to get out! Exercise, even taking a walk after dinner!

People with C usually tend to need more insoluble fiber than D people. Read Heathers guidelines but remember to incorporate more insoluble fiber, like fruits, hummus, beans if you can handle them.

If all else fails, ask your doctor about Miralax. Its a prescription osmotic laxative. It works by pulling water into your colon. I took it for years and it helped a lot!

Thank you Michele, for replying!

So you were constipated all the time, then suddenly you began to get attacks of diarrhea? Your guts just reversed like that?

One peculiar feature of my constipation is that the stools are never hard, they are simply soft an unformed. The colon just seems to not move very much.

I was given Glycolax once, which I beleive is a generic form of Miralax, and wasn't satisfied with the results, though admittedly I didn't use it any longer than two weeks.

Yep, my guts did a total 190! Pretty crazy!

Yes, I believe the glycolax is the generic miralax. What was your expierence with it? It did give me some loose stool and wasn't perfect but at least things kept moving!
