If by increasing my fiber doesn't give me relief in 3 weeks, it was recommended today by my medical MD that I see a Colon/Rectal Doctor and not go back to the GI doc because he doesn't know how else to help me.

What's the difference between the two?

I don't know technically what is different, but I think they treat different conditions. I have been to a GI and he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me. I just started seeing a colon/rectal surgeon last week, and he's pretty sure I have a rectal prolapse. And he is soooo much nicer than the GI I went to. My GI did the colonoscopy/endoscopy stuff. The C/R doc did a rectal exam on the first visit. Probably something I should have had a long time ago. And the C/R doc actually performs surgery...he is a surgeon. I don't konw if GIs do surgery or not. I'm sure you could find some info if you search the internet. But from my experience I got way more help from the C/R surgeon.

I consider myself IBS-C, although I don't know that I really am C. My BMs are fairly normal for the most part, it's just so hard to get them out. My Dr. is pretty sure I have rectal prolapse. So, it's like there is something blocking the opening...the rectum has slipped down. When I do go, and push, I can feel something coming out...which is the prolapse. It's kind of hard to describe. I also go 3-4 times a day, but it never feels like I get everything out. It's like stuff is just sitting there so close to being able to come out but there is something right at the opening that is in the way. Do you have specific symptoms you're worried about? C takes a while to clear up. It can take more than a few weeks, unfortunately. What kind of SFS are you taking? How much? Are you drinking enough water and exercising? Those are all very important. If you tell me some of your symptoms I can tell you if it sounds like what I have. And I'm sure colon docs see people for plenty of other conditions. I'm sure it can't hurt to get another opinion. It took me several years to get my Dr. to refer me to a colon surgeon. I'd take the opporunity if I were you. If nothing else, he can at least rule out some other stuff and verify that you truly have IBS. It will give you some peace of mind. And he might have more advice about how to manage things. And you never know, he might find something. HTH. I'm happy to answer any other specific questions you have.

Thanks Mary. I've been dealing with IBS since my thirties. However, this year it came back as a result of what they say is stress. Ive been doctoring for this since February, but last week I developed a pain in my left back around under my breast that hurt when I breathed. I took myself to ER and they ran CTS, Ultrasounds,Blood, Urine all checked out perfect. My GI doc sent me home and told me to eat whatever I want and to stay on Levbid indefinitely. I did a followup with my MD and he recommended an MRI of that part of my back since they saw arthritis. I did that yesterday. After he reads results he recommended I see the colorectal doctor. The pain is still in my back I still dread going to bathroom, lots of burning up inside rectum area. Not sure if that is from spasms or the Levbid putting the breaks on my insides. Actually the burning upinside is a relatively new symtom, because I'm older now and maybe the symptoms change. CTs didn't show that I have gallstones, Ultrasound showed moderate amount of diverticular. Do not nor did I ever experience any gas attached to my IBS. Just from a moderate movement to an explosive one. I've increased Heathers' accacia, but afraid to leave the house. Although on Friday nite we did go out for dinner and pretended I was in normal mode and ate as directed "whatever" as I was told. I spent the entire night going gassy what looked like everything I ate from Tuesday. So I'm back to eating the same foods again because I'm afraid to eat "the whatever I want". I don't know what else to make of this. From as far back as I can remember I've always had burning in the vaginal area whenever I felt "D", or the "C" that came with IBS. I've been getting hot flashes with all of this as well. My doctor also recommended I try Wellbutrin. I'm very afraid to leave the house and tomo I have to go to work. I sit with my legs crossed tight because after a movement it hurts up inside. Don't know what to think of any of this. Thanks so much for caring and sharing. I'm on the verge of tears almost daily and feel very irritable. Hoping to hearback. Carol B.

Hi Mary...I tried to explain my symptoms in the last post.
I just feel lots of burning upinside after movements, whether they are D or Moderate, multiple movements. I move daily, and don't really know what to expect throughout my day. It is totally unpredictable with flare-ups. I'll fill you in on my visit with the Colon-rectal doc as soon as I get to see him. Thanks for sharing from the bottom of my heart.

Hi Carol. I completely understand about being in tears every day and not wanting to go anywhere. That was me about a month ago. Things started changing and getting much worse all of a sudden in March and then continued to decline. Things just got to a point where I felt like I couldn't handle it anymore...worse and worse and worse...Stress is my major trigger. I started seeing a psychologist in May. That has been a HUGE help. I'm realizing now that my anxiety and stress (started in college...I'm only 26) caused my IBS...not the other way around. So, by learning how to control my anxiety I can deal with and even reduce my IBS...and hopefully eliminate it completely someday. I have also done the hypno CDs. They didn't cure me, but they helped me understand how to handle things...how to be in control of my body/mind instead of it controlling me. If you haven't tried it yet (IBS Audio 100) I highly recommend it. Unfortunately I can't relate to the burning symptom. I've never had that. I have always had trapped gas as a symptom of my IBS...my first symptom and the hardest to treat. I tried Levsin but it just made my C worse so I quit. Plus it didn't really help the spasms anyway. You may want to experiment to see if the Levbid is really helping you or not. When my C gets worse I get pain in my shoulder blades...not horrible pain, but annoying. Usually any severe pain I have is trapped gas. I would not listen to the GI that told you to eat whatever you want. That is the sign of a doctor that is not very knowledgable about IBS. IBS can't be managed with drugs alone...you have to control your diet abd your stress as well. I would stick with the acacia and follow Heather's diet. If you tend towards C like me, be sure to eat enough IF and drink lots of water. And daily exercise is key too. I take a combination of Citrucel and acacia. I take around 20 g right now, but am still trying to increase to make things move more easily. If you are just starting out with acacia give it plenty of time. It took me over a month to adjust to it. And start with a low dose. I took too much at first and it made my C worse. Some people have had luck with anti-depressants. I tried Celexa for a while. It worked at first, but after a month or so I started having bad side effects, and it made my C worse. So I quit. It can't hurt to try the Welbutrin, but don't get dissappointed if it doesn't work. And you may want to try a few others even if this one doesn't work.

I would still see the colon doc to get another opinion. My GI completely missed what the colon doc found. And even if tests don't show anything else, he may have more advice for you. I'm hoping that the combo of my psychologist and being treated for prolapse will be my path towards healing. Hopefully you can find what works for you too. Keep me updated on how your appt. goes and feel free to ask any questions.

I find that one of the things that helps me most is writing things out...when I post/ask questions/etc. it helps me sort through what I'm actually feeeling. So feel free to write about whatever's on your mind. It's a great stress reliever. I hope you start feeling better.
