I needed the pick-me-up, so I'm posting a couple more pictures of where we stayed in Phuket, Thailand these past few weeks, plus a look into our not-so-nuclear family. The other blond is my long-suffering BF.

We're in Patong Beach, on the western coast of Thailand. Time to get on the bikes! (This is of course before I got into my bike wreck!!)
Me, melting in the 95 degree weather with 85% humidity! Gotta get on that bike and cool down!
BF's dad, who made the trip possible. Quite the adventurer for 65!
My gorgeous DBF. I am his biggest fan, no doubt.
Boats at low tide. Very postcard-esque!

Thanks for the pictures ... It is really a beautiful place. Are you glad that you were able to make the trip? How did your stomach handle the food? One last question: Had you bfs dad been there before?

He'd been to Chiang Mai before, but never this down south. He loves Thailand. He says when he's old and he falls down, he wants his butt to hit sand.

I just want you to know that your sweet encouraging spirit and smiling face and witty comments always make me GRIN! You are a bright spot in this world and I think often how I wish (okay, pray, can't help it, I do!) that you find peace.
Hope something happens today to make you SMILE so big your cheeks hurt!!!!!!!!!

BF's dad found her in a massage parlour in Bangkok 2 days before the trip. She didn't speak any English, and he had to buy her what ammounted to a full travel wardrobe plus suitcase (she didn't own one), and she only had a vague notion she was coming on this trip with us in the first place.
BF's dad gave the massage owner what amounted to a month's worth of Tim's wages, plus he had to send money to her 15 year old son and her ailing father in the North (near Laos). The total amount of payoffs was embarrassingly close to $100.
Once she realized through internet sites of the hotel where we were going, she seemed pretty happy. She was a very shy girl and didn't talk a lot. We had to get by on hand signals and my rudimentary Thai which I'd been trying to teach myself for the 3 months prior via a Learn to Speak Thai CD in my car.
All in all, an interesting trip language/culture-wise, esp considering I spent a lot of time with her while the Menly Men went off to cruise more girls on their mopeds. Sucks to be them cos I got a massage EVERY DAY for my efforts. I am also now proficient in Asking Directions Thai, Shopping Thai Style, and Thai in the Restaurant (Deeshan nee yak die boo mai peh! I like my crab not spicy!).
[I also have a minor in Telling Them Where It Hurts in the Hospital Thai, but let's not dwell on that!! ]

BF's dad broke up with this Croatian chick he was seeing and didn't want to just go with us two. So he was looking for a "nice Thai girl" to go with him, so he started checking out the massage parlours and Tim (YES, she's a GIRL) is who he found.

And to think she was only $100 as a companion and she got this sweet deal out if it. God, it costs me $100 to just drive to calgary and back, in the same dang province!
If only she knew the thousands you all forked over to be in paradise.

On the last day, I think BF wrote down in the local currency what we paid in rent. Her face kinda fell and turned a little grey. I did not want to talk about money in front of her!
She was really thankful for all the gifts, and when I spent time with her I tried to make it bareable for her. I mean, I don't know if she even liked BF's dad. He can be a bit of a boor. Tim and I did have fun when we were able to communicate. But the class seperation was so weird. It was hard for me not to think about it when we were together. I was invited as a guest on this trip too! And she's exactly the same age as me.
So theoretically, BF's dad and Tim are getting a house up near Laos where she's from. We get emails every now and again from him, but no pictures of this future abode yet.
This is much better than a soap opera, I have to admit.
