Hey Guys,
I need some good vibes sent my way. I'm going for my first job interview in four years tomorrow and I'm really scared. I hate that I even have to be doing this but I think it's best I try and get back to work. It's with a staffing agency but it's for a permanent position as an accounts payable clerk/secretary. The benefit is they may also have other jobs available.
Last night I did all their testing (it can be done online) and I think I did pretty well (there was SO much though, typing, listening skills, data entry, math, vocubulary, punctuation, WORD and Excel) but now I'm really scared about the interview.
I haven't worked in 1 year and I don't want them to know that but I'm afraid it might come across because I'm so out of practice.
Any tips? Good advice? Anything?

relax, have a nice dinner of IBS extremely safe foods, go in there and kick butt! You got what it takes to fill that position.

Just relax tonight and get a good sleep. Just be honest when answering the questions and you'll do just fine. I will be sending you good thoughts tomorrow!
Can't wait to hear how it goes!

I'm really happy that you're taking this step after having been out of work for a year. It's normal to be nervous, but remember to have confidence in yourself (you have experience, you're smart, you've made it through a very difficult year where you had to advocate for yourself a lot). Have you thought about practicing/having a mock interview with your fiance?
For tomorrow, take a deep breath before you go into your interview, smile, and just be yourself. I think sincerity and friendliness go a long way.
Good luck!

It went really well. They were extremely impressed with all my scores on the at-home testing they had me do, and they have two potential immediate positions and possibly some other ones coming available. The problem is, the one they want to send me out for (it's an agency so I have to go and meet with the manager of the actual place as well to make sure he likes me) will likely want an interview Monday, which is also when I possibly have another job opportunity. Ugh...I don't know which way to go.
The other one is a front-desk person at a hotel...I was in there today as well and I thought I was just dropping off my resume but it happened to be the general manager and we got to talking and he said he'd like me to come in and shadow an employee for the day to make sure I could handle the job, and then if they like me I'd start immediately. I would rather have that job because it would give me the opportunity to work later in the day (the other job is 8-5 which is killer with my sleep schedule) but they are both good jobs.
So I'm not sure what to do. I think I should probably hold out for the hotel, and if necessary tell the temp. agency that I can't attend an interview that day, in which case they will either postpone it (if they can) or fill the position with someone else...at least there I know something else will come along (they had 3 more jobs open up after I left). Whereas with the hotel this would be my only shot.
Any opinions or advice?
Thanks for all your support guys

SEeee we knew that it would go great
I worked in a hotel reception and LOVED it, ever since I was little and watched the American soap HOTEL set in the St Gregory Hotel I always wanted to!
I think you should tell the temp agency that you have another commitment on Monday, they won't mind. They were impressed with your scores and the interview went well so I'm sure that they will find you another position. Hold out for the hotel job for the moment.

I'm going out of my mind! Optimally, I was supposed to hear from both places sometime today, and it's almost 4:00PM and I haven't heard anything yet I didn't think it would bother me so much it's just that everything seemed to have gone so well so I can't understand why I haven't heard anything. And I really wanted a chance at that hotel job, so badly...and he's the one I really want to call. So I need a distraction because I'm literally sitting staring at the phone...and you know what they say, whenever you are waiting for a phone to ring it never does.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all your distractions! The hotel finally called (of course as soon as I stopped waiting for the phone to ring) and I go in Monday for my "screening". I'm still not 100% sure how it works but I think basically they'll have me do some basic stuff and follow someone around and if I do a good job and they like me I'll get offered the job.
So now I'm super-stressed out because I almost feel like it's my job to lose (if that makes any sense) so if anyone has any tips or anything I'd really appreciate it. Especially anyone with hotel experience (Cailin? I think you've gone away...)
Thanks guys

Kelly,
I don't want to be negative, but I worked at a hotel briefly, and it was not the best experience. Here are some of the negatives to consider:
-Being on your feet for several hours -Unhappy guests (I worked at an average to below-average place, so it was hard knowing the management didn't properly take care of problems) -Occasional stress (like when you have a long line of people wanting to check in) -Erratic hours (sometimes I worked 3pm-11pm; sometimes I worked 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
Working at the hotel was not all bad, but the pay was not great for the crud I had to deal with at times. To me, a clerk/secretarial position sounds more attractive, because you won't have to deal with as many people.
Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

i used to work at hotels here in Orlando Florida. I have worked for Hilton and some Disney hotel front desk. It could be scary when you just started because you want to show people you know what you are doing...but don't worry... you will make mistakes...but you will get better dont let stress get to you.

I'm actually not really sure whether to be sad about this or not - it was really the strangest job interview I have ever been on. It was essentially unpaid training and lots of testing (math testing, directions and knowledge of the city, role playing and skits). There were 7 people there vying for 2 jobs, and he told us he would let us know at the end of the night who he was hiring (talk about awkward).
Anyways, it was supposed to go from 5-9 at night, but he didn't arrive until 5:30 and I didn't get out of there until 11:20...then he called at 12:30AM to give his decision. I was apparently #3 I worked really hard in this interview and actually thought I out-performed most of the people there, but some of them had more education than me so I don't know if that might have something to do with it.
Anyways, now that I know more about it, I'm not sure it would have been the best job. It's a decent size hotel (not huge) yet after 5:00PM the person working the front-desk is all alone in the hotel. No bellstaff, housekeeping, managers...anything. Even working overnights, I would be the only employee in the hotel. I just didn't think that was very safe. He even said that if a customer needed something like their toilet plunged, we would have to go up and do it...and I thought to myself, so I'm going to leave the front-desk unattended late at night while I'm here alone, to potentially go up to some man's room and put myself in his bathroom? Just didn't seem overly safe. I'm fairly young and small and definately not strong and I would not feel comfortable with that.
So maybe it is for the best. Really hard to say for sure because I thought I really wanted it...but maybe if a hotel job is what I want I should be looking/applying at some of the bigger ones in the city (with 24 hour room service for example) so that I know I won't be the only person working.

Hi Kelly,
Wow that does sound like a strange job interview! I don't think it's safe either to be the only staff person in the hotel after 5pm, I couldn't do it.
What about that temp agency? Did you hear back from them.
Good luck with your job hunt. Jenn

Hi Tina,
Sorry to hear about your job as well (and sorry I didn't get around to responding yet). I think it's really promising that the head-hunter wants to pass your info on to another company though...you must have made a great impression Good luck!

Thanks for your reply I'm glad someone else agrees that it seems weird to be all alone at night like that. It should have said in the job description that they were actually looking for a front desk person/housekeeper/bellman/lifeguard! I still might have taken it but I don't know if I would have lasted.
The agency called today and they are still working with two companies trying to set up an interview for me - they are both in factories but the job itself is something I think I would be really good at, but I'm going to keep looking for non-agency positions just because they often come with less hassle (plus these two companies are really far from where I live).
