I really miss her presence on the boards. I hope she's doing well and had a successful appointment with the surgeon.
I'm thinking of you, Sarala!

I met with the surgeon last Wed. He's super! We're removing one lobe of my thyroid and if they find cancer we'll remove the other lobe and I will have radiation and take synthroid. I'm overwhelmed and I went into a cocoon for a while but I will try to be on the boards now until I leave for the surgery.
The surgery date is June 13th. We don't have the date I meet with the anesthesiologist yet.
I had a thyroid nodule that was growing and we have been doing what is called a Fine Needle Aspiration for years. Betweeen the nodule growing and the Aspiration coming back with follicular clusters this time (they were all in the clear in the past), there is a 10-15% chance of cacner. That is the purpose of the surgery...to stop the growing nodule and to look for cancer. I am trying not to think about it cause I'm nervous....but this needs to be done!
I'm kinda in my own head atm...so I don't how much good I'll be at helping others....but I will try. We are also adjusting my bipolar meds yet again (the doc is beginning to run out of meds to try with me!!!) so life is kinda crazy right now. I decided to peak in really fast and I found this and I couldn't not respond...you're all the best *hugs*
With love...hope everyone is well!!!!!!

Hi Sarala,
That's good to hear that you have a date for the surgery. I had thyroid surgery in 1999 to remove part of my thyroid because I too had a nodule that was growing. They removed both parts when they found it was cancerous. I was in the hospital for 5 days and I had the radiation drink 2 months later (they had to wait for me to go hypothyroid first).
It has been 7 years since my surgery and I've seen a thyroid specialist every 6 mos for blood work and to get my prescription of Synthyroid. I have been totally fine.
I think you'll feel alot better after you have the lobe removed so that you won't have to worry about it growing anymore.
Sending you good wishes.
Jenn
p.s> bring a lot of magazines/books to read when you're in the hospital because it can get pretty boring, I also ordered a tv for my hospital room.

Thanks Jenn This really helps! Yeah...I know we'll have to wait 2 months to do the 2nd lobe if there is cancer. We considered just removing the whole thyroid...but the final decision we made was to remove just the one lobe in case there's no cancer there. How did you make your decision?
I won't be getting my own room after the surgery--did you? Thanks for the tip...I'll bring a good book and Sudoku
Again...thanks for sharing! It's good to hear from someone who has been there
Love,
Sarala

It is so good to see you back on the boards. I've missed you. I'm sorry that you are going to have to have surgery but at least you will know what is going on and you won't have to worry anymore.
I'll send you an e-mail tomorrow morning.
Love,

Hi Sarala,
Well, they took out the first lobe in the morning sent it to pathology and found out it was cancerous (they had thought it was benign from the fine needle aspiration). After that the surgeon booked me in for my second surgery that afternoon to take the other lobe out. It turned out not to be cancerous but they felt that it's better safe than sorry, so both were removed. Being 19, I didn't really think much of it and my parents were alot more worried then I was...lol...I guess it's that whole teenager invincibility thing.
No I didn't get my own room after surgery, I was in a ward room so their were 3 other people in the room with me. I was 19 at the time though and these women were much much older than me so I didn't really talk to them much. My family visited every day though after the surgery.
I think I had to wait to get two months for the radiation because they're waiting for the body to go into 'hypothyroid' mode.
Glad I could help. Jenn
