I checked the mail today and there was a magazine in there with my name and address on it. So I thought maybe Tommy surprised me with a subscription. No, wasn't him. We called the magazine's 1-800 number and they just said that a 12 week subscription was paid for and couldn't give out any more info. We both checked our credit cards and it doesn't appear on either of our recent orders??
Weird??!!! It's not my birthday or anything?

Ooh, what a nice surprise! Is it a magazine you like?

Yes, it IS a magazine that I like. It's a celebrity magazine and I never buy them. I always read them in grocery store line ups and at the gym but could never justify buying them!

I used to subscribe to Good Housekeeping but let it expire last fall. I know it didn't just restart because this time my name is spelled right. All of a sudden I have recieved two issues in the past two weeks! I thought maybe I forgot about it, but I noticed it was for 2 years and I never subscribe that long. I asked my mom(she'd be the only one to do something like that) but she said she hadn't either. In fact, she had just started recieving Readers Digest W/O subscribing. It makes me wonder if this is some new marketing ploy???? I am also curious as to how many other people have experienced this?

I think it's definitely the publishers sending out the "free" subscriptions, because it can work one of 2 ways:
1. The "sharp" people who catch that they didn't subscribe will decide they like it and subscribe after all, and
2. The people who are so busy/preoccupied/whatever that they didn't even realize they DIDN'T subscribe (hey, I'm sure there's some out there!) will get the "renewal notice" and pay it, and end up being a paid subscriber unwittingly. Which is sneaky, but I bet that happens a lot.
But hey - free magazines are a good thing! Enjoy 'em while they last!

Casey, I'm sure you're right. I will make sure not to renew the subscription! I can't afford that now!

I got another issue of the same magazine but this time it has a page on the front to mail back for 8 more issues. And to write 'cancel' on it if I didn't want anymore.
HOW SNEAKY!!!!

Don't you just hate it when they send you something like letter labels or gift cards or something and try to guilt a donation out of you?

Oh yes! For a while, one of the local hospitals kept sending me personalized note paper with my name and theirs on it.

I have to admit that I do that intentionally to get free knitting magazines. I sign up for them online, get an issue, and then I send the invoice back marked "cancel"... or not, and let them figure it out. Hah!
Well, anyway, enjoy the freebie!
