Anyone take flax oil capsules?

Alright, a week into Weight Watchers I'm feeling better about my diet---except that my "stomach problems" I suffered with for about 18 months are back! I am eating healthy foods, but I'm convinced it is the lower fat content that has caused my system to feel sooooooo sluggish.

I read online that one Weight Watchers leader said she takes 1,000 mg. flax oil capsules a day to compensate for the lower fat in her diet.

I'm thinking about going to the health food store tomorrow to talk to them about this. If I remember correctly, I tried the capsules several years ago (not for this problem), and they gave me D!!!!

Anyone take them? Do they cause D? Just the first several days of taking them or all of the time?

Any thoughts on the capsules would be greatly appreciated.

I'm tired of going to bed with a stomachache---and waking up with one. I will not give up on the Weight Watchers. I know it works. I have to lose this extra weight.

Hey BL!

I've been on Weight Watchers for 40 days now. I'm doin' real well with it, down a few pounds, and feelin' GREAT! The online program is SOOO much better than our local lecturer; she's terrible. I post a lot on the online Boards and calculate my old recipes so I know the points. I LOVE it!

Gigi is also on WW, and we support each other via e-mail. We also share recipes. It's fun.

I used to take flax seed oil -- in an attempt to reduce my cholesterol -- and in fact, I'm not sure why I stopped. I might just start up again. Check this out: web page

I'm a "D" but I did not notice that the capsules gave me any more "D." BTW, be sure the capsules you buy are REFRIGERATED; otherwise, they're sure to be rancid.

Sorry to hear you're having tummy problems, but if it's any consolation, I had them as well when I first started on WW. It's a LOT of veggies all at once, which we're just not used to. Also, I found out the hard way to stay clear of all the prepared WW products. They contain nasty stuff, like Heaven-Forbid Dairy, artificial sweeteners, HFCS, and (the worst) Maltitol Syrup! YIKES!

I don't think that sluggish feeling is necessarily a bad thing because I think it's actually our bodies burning fat. Oprah complained about it on her diet show some years back, and her trainer told her that she wasn't familiar with the feeling of her body burning the fat, and to "cherish the feeling." Yeah right....

Keep up the struggle. We'll get there Girlfriend!

I didn't realize you were doing WW! Congratulations on your success with it.

I appreciate your comments on the flax oil capsules. I did a search on them last night and saw that you took them in the past. I wondered what it did to your IBS. That's good to know that they didn't give you D, but I was kind of hoping, since I'm C, that they would swing me in the other direction.

My frustration is that I can eat a diet of extremely high fat, bad-for-you food (such as Big Macs and French fries and Taco Bell nachoes) and be fine----but if I eat healthy, I suffer in pain. That doesn't make sense to me!

I thought if I was extremely careful with the insoluble fiber, I would do ok this time on WW, but so far, I'm suffering. I don't want to get graphic, but when I do have a BM, I really struggle---and it's painful, like everything is moving so slowly through my system!!! I can feel my colon contracting and it hurts! AHHHHHHH! I was not having any problems before I started WW last week. It all started abruptly when I began the program, so I know I'm doing something wrong.

The last time I did WW, I ate tons of high fiber foods (Kashi cereal, raw veggies such a broccoli and carrots, and fresh strawberries)----all of those things that kill IBS sufferers! This was before I realized I had IBS, and I didn't have a clue why my tummy hurt so much.

This time, I swore I would make it through the program by doing things differently. I have been getting in my fruits and veggies by eating canned fruit and vegetables, and I'm not eating any WW products because I know they contain nasty ingredients. But I'm having a hard time getting in protein. I need high protein at breakfast and lunch so that I don't get hungry. But the high protein things I ate before on WW are all no-no's when it comes to IBS (boiled eggs, string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.) What do you eat for high protein that doesn't hurt your stomach?

I didn't mean to start a thread on WW's, but I'm begging you to please help me get off to a good start with this. My extra weight gain is making my back and foot problems worse, so I really need to get it off. I may have to have surgery soon on my right foot, which will have me sitting for awhile and burning even less calories.

I am very knowledgable about WW, having followed the program for years. It's just working the program into an IBS-friendly one that has gotten me stumped.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am not on weight watchers though I am on my own "reduction plan".

Starting January 1 of this year I cut out bread and pasta as our pastor encouraged us to fast something for the first 21 days. Then my daughter decided to fast sweets and since she is only 12 and this is her first fast I chose to join her. So I dropped bread...pasta and sugar for the first three weeks of the year.

I was so sick within days...dizzy spells, sluggishness, nausea, fatigue. I just wanted to crawl under a rock and cry. By the eighth day I was fine and I don't think that I will ever get started on major starchy food again. Eating a bunch of starchy stuff has never benefitted my IBS anyway.

I think your body is probably going through a degree of "detox" if you will. I have baked spelt bread and I put flax seed in it. I don't know if that will do for you what the oil does.

Being a major "C" in the past it is scary to try another diet not to mention dealing with the symptoms. It may take trial and error to find what works for you. I would just recommend that you stick to it and take it day by day to find what works for you. In Bev you have a wonderful friend and cheerleader. Bev is why I knit so she can be why you are going to succeed!

Just some thoughts...I hope this helps somehow.

I've never actually done the weight watchers plan but I'm also trying to lose weight. BL, are you taking any fiber supplements? Try adding some Fiber con tablets if not. You could also try some stool softners. I was taking them when I was pregnant and got C real bad.

Wow, BL, I'm surprised all the fiber in the WW program doesn't "move things along" for you easier than it does. I wonder if poochibelly might be right. Perhaps you just need to "move into it" a little slower. I wonder if the flax seed oil would help you? I didn't notice a difference in them when I took them, but there was a lot going on with me back then, what with the Acacia doing its thing so violently to my system, and the probiotics as well! My body just didn't like any of it!

Say, that's a thought. Are you taking the Acacia? Have you considered "upping" the dosage? That stuff REALLY cleaned me out! Oy. I was "going" all day long back then. When I cut it all out of my diet, I "went" only 5 times a day, always in the mornings, so I could schedule all my social stuff in the afternoons. Now, on WW, I "go" only once a day, always when I first get up, and occasionally once in the afternoon, and that's all. It's GREAT! Obviously my body is really liking the WW program.

Since you can eat high fat foods and be fine, yet suffer over healthy food, I just have to believe it's too much of a change too soon. What if you "dropped back" to your old way of eating for awhile -- but keep track of your points in the process -- and keep that food journal so you can figure out which foods do what to your system.

Are you keeping track of your points or just checking them off as you use them? I keep a food journal, like I always have, except this time I record the points as well. I think this might help you.

I really would cut back on the insoluble fiber if I were you. I just think it's too much too soon.

Kashi cereal, broccoli, carrots, fresh strawberries? YIKES! I still can't eat broccoli; it's too much roughage! When we go to Applebee's, Don gets all my broccoli. Boiled eggs, string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.? YIKES! Girl, we gotta talk....

Canned fruit and vegetables? EW. Well, we do what we gotta, eh?

I don't focus so much on the protein. For breakfast, I have cereal with a banana and soy milk. For lunch, it's a "Snicker Style Dessert Bar" (see recipe in Recipe Board). For dinner, it's a WW recipe that I get online or in one of the volumes of old WW cookbooks that I'm converting to points through the online program. Night before last, it was Chicken Cacciatore. Yesterday, however, I was craving Dead Cow Carcass, so we threw some burgers on the barbie, then a green salad later in the day. (Today we have to go into town, so we're stopping at Burger King, where I'm going to have a 13-point Whopper Junior.) For a treat in the evenings, I usually have a nice big fresh pear, and if I'm really hungry, a few rice cakes. If you're concerned about getting sufficient protein, have you considered a protein powder from the health food store? I used to take those before my IBS; I don't know how IBS-friendly they are, but you might check 'em out.

I know what you mean about back problems; with me, it's back and KNEE issues (as well as high cholesterol and BP), so I really need to get the weight off. And I WILL. It's just gonna take some time. I sympathize with that impending surgery; I had surgery on my knee, leaving me with no cartilege, so walking is very painful, and the more weight I put on it, the more painful. Oh yeah, you bet I'll get this weight off! And yes, the recovery takes a long time. I had to be completely non weight-bearing for 6 months, on crutches of course, but I was able to row. I would go down to the dock on my crutches, then Don would help ease me into the boat, and I'd take off down the river. Try to find something you can do when you are recovering, something like floor work for instance. Pilates?

I too am familiar with WW, having joined in 1985; I's a healthy program and one that I could -- and SHOULD HAVE -- followed all through the past 20 years. I checked online to see if there were others on WW who have IBS as well, and surprisingly there are. I know it's do-able, BL, I'm positive of it. I just think you need to start a little slower and modify some of your meals a little.

I find it interesting that you can tolerate the higher fat stuff; I wonder if the low-fat in the WW program is the problem. Give those flax seed oil capsules a try; the fat might be just the trick.

Please keep in touch; I wanna know how you do.

I tried them and they maybe didn't agree with me (ibs-wise) because I did stop taking them.

To make you stop taking them? If they gave you D, I'm okay. But if they gave you pain or cramps, I may consider stopping this. I only take one a day, though. I thought it would help with the C.

Probably the D, I'd think they'd be good for someone with constipation.

Thanks for your help. I am much better today, but I've hardly eaten anything. I'm afraid to eat!

Taking Acacia is out of the question. I do not tolerate any of the soluble fiber supplements. They make me much worse!

When I was talking about eating broccoli, Kashi cereal, strawberries, cheeses, that was BEFORE I knew I had IBS. The more fiber I ate, the worse I was. I was in so much pain! And the stupid GI doc I went to see, told me to eat more fiber---to get things going. The high fiber foods just make me bloated. My colon contracts and I get horrible C.

I'm still very frustrated because I want to eat healthy, but every time I eat fruits and vegetables, I have C (and sometimes D). The only way I can tolerate them is canned, which I admit, is yucky. If I eat strawberries, grapes or even watermelon, I suffer for days! How in the heck am I supposed to eat healthy when I can't tolerate these things?

Patience has never been one of my virtues, but I am going to have to, like you said, take it slowly. I do think the lower fat foods are the problem because I don't have this problem when I eat high fat foods.

I just look in my refrigerator and see yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, apples, grapes----and I can't eat any of them without pain. So I throw in the towel and drive through Mackie D's which suits me fine.

My body is nuts, I know!!!!! Boy, do I wish I could just eat a juicy fresh pineapple, some grapes, or a plum. I would be rolling around in the bed at night in pain.

I need all the encouragement I can get to stick with this. I have to lose this weight.
