Hey all. I have a question. I've had this ringing (not painful at all, just really annoying) in my left ear. I've had it for 5 to 6 years but it's been increasing and a bit louder only within the past year. It's not constant but it happens every day now (sometimes more than once but not often more than once). Anyone have that? Anyone know what it might be? I know I have to go to my doctor but I'm waiting until after Christmas. I just saw him two days ago for another problem and forgot to mention the ringing. It's never my right ear only my left. And I have no wisdom teeth on my left side. I've only got one wisdom tooth which is on the bottom right side and it's growing straight and not bothering me at all.

Hi sgebhardt! Well, definitely consult your doctor... But I can't resist trying to armchair-analyze this though!

Does it get better if you take antihistimes? Do you ever get a sloshing feeling or numbness in your face or neck? Did something happen 5-6 years ago when the first symptoms started, ie trauma or illness or new medication?

Best,

No prior injury or trauma, no numbness, no sloshing. The only thing, and this is a first, is I got a headache from it earlier because it got a bit annoying. No antihistamines. Never had a reason. Well I used to take them years ago for some of my allergies but now I just put up with them. Some of my allergies have gone away. I'm not on any medications either. The only thing I was taking before was birth control pills but I've been off them for 5 years.

I cannot get my ears to "pop," if that makes sense. I just cannot chew gum. And I'm really dizzy/nauseated. However, when/if I take an antihistamine/motion sickness pill, IT GOES AWAY. Seriously, it's like airline/travel sickness everyday until I take an antihistamine (I started them a few days ago).

Very weird. I wonder what this is all about.

Kate.

I wonder if it was started by going off the birth control.

If it's caused by extra fluid in the inner ear, usually antihistimines (especially Diphenhydramine HCl) will dry it up and make this sort of thing go away. Have you tried taking half a benedryl when it's bad, to see if it makes a difference?

I had this before I started birth control pills. So I don't think it can be that either. Ah well. We shall see what the doctor says! (maybe it's all "in my head". )

Pain with ringing? new

Don't let your doctor tell you it's all in your head! I get it tho, the ringing is in your head, ha ha ha!

Do you have TMJ? My TMJ started at the same time my Tinnitus started, when I got my first tooth retainer, and then it got super bad when I got braces. Whenever I chew tough or sugary foods, or bite into something hard, it can start a TMJ/Tinnitus attack, which lasts for hours. There's nothing I can take that helps it, and it feels like someone is sticking a knitting needle into both ears and my jaw! (There's a visual! )

Do you have pain associated with the ringing or any hearing loss? Also do you have TMJ?

Sorry for the questions, I'm just interested in the diagnosis, that's all!

I def think it's tied to the tooth situation. Did you have any dentist work around the time of the ringing beginning? Does it get worse when you have a toothache or when you visit the dentist? Also have you never had braces before (which might account for this not happening earlier in life)?

Hey there! Hope you had a good Christmas!

No, no TMJ. When it does happen, the hearing in that ear...well I can still hear but it's like someone turned the volume down in that ear.
