my hubby's Christmas party is Thursday night and it will be held at a Country Club. I really don't have anything to wear! Last year the two outfits I bought were when I was really thin like 125 pounds and when I tried them on this year they are too snug now that I am a healthy 140lbs! I want to buy something new but don't want to spend alot either. I have at home black dress pants, grey, black skirt, and a few shirts but nothing that is really nice. What do you guys think? I wore black pants last year with a dressy shirt but can't wear the same shirt two years in a row. I hate all this fluctuating with my weight. It really stinks!

Buy a really nice sweater or shirt to wear with one of the skirts or pants you already have, something that's not ultra-fitted so that you can still wear if you lose or gain another 10 lbs or so. I've found that even when company holiday parties are held in really nice venues, most women tend to wear dress slacks/skirt with a nicer blouse.

We always have 2-3 who go all out (i.e. sequins or excessive fake fur) and they tend to just look weird! Usually they are someone's aging trophy wife.

I need a nice fitted dusted silk blouse, one in dark grey and one in black
Some black hip hugger trousers that make my butt small and legs long,
and, um... a TIARA!

~nelly~ OK maybe not a tiara...!

Yeah... if I remember last year that was kind of the case. I guess I just get nervous because my hubby is a young and broke dentist and the people in the area we will be with are well established and some can be quite uppity. We are just not those kind of people. But he has to go to this to promote his business in the community. Actually last year I bought a really cute shirt from Target and one of the ladies who is quite wealthy kept commenting on my shirt and how lovely it was! I secretly smiled to myself thinking she would never probably be caught in a Target!!

Hmmm...maybe a new jacket to go with the dress pants? That's always chic.

Something dressy but classy that doesn't just sit in the wardrobe till next Christmas! I am a huge fan of the "black (skinny) pants and a new top each season approach to dressing up!

Thanks Bev! I like the idea of sparkles and I was kind of thinking along those lines. I don't really have any time this week to go out and shop though. Maybe tomorrow night. I have a collegue who is the same size as me and is going to look in her wardrobe tonight and bring in some things tomorrow!

Angela, if you want, I have the burgunday dress I'm wearing in my photo here hanging on my door! I wore it once a couple of years ago to the cruise we went on. I was about 140 pounds at the time, I bet it'll fit! If you want, I can bring it when I meet you Wednesday. It comes between your knees and ankles and has a little matching shaw.

Since its at a country club, I'd say go for the skirt with a pair of knee high boots. That always looks classy (as long as its a knee length skirt and not a short skirt.. then you might look like a country club hooker ). Maybe add a little sparkly cami and a cardigan.. found easily at target or old navy on the cheap. let us know what you've chosen.

Keep the black pants, and go find yourself a pretty but serviceable blouse that you can wear again. It's a cheap way to update your look, and you can never go wrong with classic black pants.

But that is all coming from a fashion-challenged sweat pant Mom!

That was me that went all out this year. I saw this black satin strapless dress with a stiff new underskirt that looked SO Sarah Jessica Parker that I had to buy it. I wore it to the work do just so I could wear it somewhere! I'm wearing it in my latest profile pic, but you can't really see it cause it's strapless. Hehee... I love dressing up.

I say go with the black pants tho. Black pants are classic and you can't tell one pair from another so noone will know or care if you wore them last year. If you have the money, get a pretty little top and a nice slim-waisted tailored jacket to wear over the top. Wear with some simple jewellery, maybe a feature necklace if the top's plain and low-necked, or some plain earrings if the top's more... decorative.

Ok well I went shopping at a place called Value City that sells name brands for cheap. I bought a silver with some sparkles sleevless turtleneck and a long black skirt. I have a cute little black sweater that will be nice to go over it in case I am cold. I am also going to wear my tall black boots. My friend from work brought me in some clothes also so I might take a look at her stuff as well. Thanks for all the fashion advice! I appreciate it!!!

I know what you mean ... I love dressing up but never have any place to go! Darn it. I missed both my and hubby's office xmas parties this year, my only chances to wear something nice.

I love your new profile pic by the way, you should post the whole pic for us sometime! I wanna see the dress
