As some of you may remember, we had a barking dog next door that drove us bonkers. When I finally called and complained, the renters moved out without a word, and I felt horrible.

The new tenants are in the process of moving in, but they're taking forever. They've been gone a very long time and left their dog outside in the freezing cold and snow, chained to the porch railing. For over 24 hours now, we have listened to his constant crying, and it's killing me. Hubby went over there to check and make sure he has food and water and gave him several treats, but the dog turned the treats down, hoping instead that Don would save him.

I told Don I thought this was animal cruelty, but he disagrees. We haven't met our new neighbors yet, and we want to start off on the right foot, but I can't stand seeing an animal suffer. How can he live outside in that freezing cold with no human contact for over 24 hours, with no help in sight?

This is breaking my heart. Don doesn't want me to do anything, but I told him I will tolerate it only a short while longer, and then I'm calling the owner of that property and letting them know that this poor animal is being mistreated.

Any other suggestions, guys? HELP!

Bev

In my opinion I think that's mistreatment! I can see a few hours when you are at work, but moving? My dog would come with me everywhere if I were moving...is there an animal shelter (i.e. spca) you can call to report? I guess to avoid negative feeling, mention it to the landlord. Is there food left out for him? I feel bad, I could never do that

That poor baby!

Can you call the owner and ask if they are ok....say that you thought maybe something happened to them since they'd left their dog like that? That could be a good excuse to call. Heck, could something have happened to them? Why on earth would someone do something like that?

--there would be doggie daycare, etc.

I don't know what you could do to improve the dog's situation beyond suggesting that the dog deserves more attention/care. It's very disturbing.

Yes, I'd call.

Kate.

I've had the same problem, but then my old neighbours were loony!

Call the landlord and ask if he'll contact the renters on your behalf (I'm guessing he won't be able to give you their contact details). Say you're worried about them as they've left their dog for so long...and how about offering to look after the dog i they're having difficulties?

If they say no to that I'd say they're mistreating their dog! But give them the chance to do the right thing so you don't have to get off on the wrong foot.

And Melissa, there ARE doggy sitters! Not group daycare (can you imagine the chaos) but professional people who look after dogs. Archie stayed with one last summer when we had to go away without him and it was great. And they could always put the dog into kennels till they've moved in properly!

on the rare day that we get a freeze here, the news is all over pat owners at minimum putting their dogs in the garage. Plants too...there is no excuse for leaving a dog out in the snow.

Shame on them!

This breaks my heart My vet says not to leave them out more than half an hour in 20 degree weather, even if they are running around. I would be so tempted to take him in for awhile.

My neighbor used to leave her boxer in a kennel ALL day in the garage, in 90 degree weather. She would 'crack' the garage door, as if that helped with the heat. I would cry whenever I saw that dog in the kennel, and when they weren't home I'd go and play with him and get him new water. He died when he was 1 year old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I felt sick when I heard that he died...and the dumb neighbors couldn't figure out why.

I am the world's worst when it comes to animal cruelty.

As soon as I see anyone tying a dog anywhere without shelter, warmth, food and water and I am ALL OVER THEIR @#q##!!!!

This is a very touchy subject for me, I'm sorry. I hate animal cruelty more than anything and I have started more fights over animals.....I cannot watch the news when I hear stories come on about animal cruelty because my blood pressure goes sky high!!!!!!!

I am a real estate appraiser and anytime I appraise a residence and see animals there that have been mistreated, or are being mistreated, I get very angry. Unfortunately, I see this alot, but I can do something about it.

I go right outside, and while I am measuring the outside of the home, I'm on the phone with the humane society. I do not play around with this at all!!!!

Bev, if I were in your shoes right now, I would have already made the call and cussed your neighbors from one ear to the other, but that's just me. Please don't let that dog continue to suffer in the freezing cold. I know they have fur, but they can only tolerate so much cold before they start shivering too. It's too cold and they are so helpless. They don't know.......they rely on us to take care of them.

Please, please, I beg of you to do something.......anything. Take him a blanket to curl up in, at least, if you're not going to call anyone.

Thanks, hon!! I feel soooooo sad for that poor dog. If it were me, I would have already taken him away from them......get him set up in a foster home who will take care of him and love him until he can be adopted.

This is just how serious I am about animal cruelty......any person that mistreats their animal like that and doesn't give a @#$% about them, I don't want to be socializing with, anyway, so don't worry about getting off on the wrong foot.
