I am so bored of my hair and as I'm trying to be really positive atm despite all the yucky fibro/IBS I think a new hair style/colour is called for!

So ladies, give me tips on home-dying your hair. I would love to get it done at the salon but just getting the cut is luxury enough for me, so I think I'll go get a hair cut and then dye my own hair - or the other way round.

Only thing is, when I tried in the past to give my hair a bit more colour it never seemed to take so I obviously need the serious stuff that I used to be scared of to get a slight colour change! Any recommendations?

Hmm, now do I go red or darker? Decisions, decisions...

I dye my hair myself all the time!

people always ask me where I get my hair done, and are generally shocked when I say the L'Oreal box. haha.

I say give it a go! buy a hair dye that promises to bring out natural highlights as well to give you a more multi dimensional color, which will look great on curly hair.

You can't tell in the picture.. what color is your hair now? I think you should go auburn or a reddish bc you have such pale skin. I'm afraid dark brown would wash you out.

but then again I'm a blonde and I don't know a ton about dark hair! Let us know what you decide!

My hair person finally explained about hair color to me recently but I don't know if I can explain it myself. The hair color is made up of yellow, red and blue tints. The blue is ash and the red is amber and the yellow is plain blonde. So if you have red highlights to begin with like me then if you use a dye for amber hues it will be too red. That is why they use ash on me and it comes out pretty. So only get the amber if you have very ash hair highlights. Don't go more than 2 shades differently. If you are just dying for the first time you will be fine, otherwise you have to remember a lot more information about how color can't lift color and so the roots end up a different color. I totally wish I didn't have to color but I have a lot of gray for my age.

I've gotten my hair colored in a salon twice in my life, and both times, it has come out absolutely HORRIBLE. By way of contrast, every dye job I've done at home since age 15 has come out perfect. Paying more does not guarantee good results anyway.

I've found that because my hair is naturally dark, I have to go with permanent dyes. Semi-permanent and other temporary forms of color don't even give me a wash of color; I need something that's going to really *process* my hair. I don't know what brands you guys have over there, but I use Colorsilk - literally the second-cheapest dye available. Garnier Nutrisse is another excellent one for naturally dark hair.

Dye your hair when it's dirty. If you can let it go unwashed for a couple days (like, say, over the weekend, and then dye it on a Sunday night), all the better. I swear it fries your hair less this way.

My caution about going darker is that if you hate it, you'll end up having to bleach your hair to get it out... or wait for it to fade/grow out. You might want to try red first! Personally, I think it would look great on you.

I'd be too scared to bleach my (very dry and frizz-prone) hair so I think I'll try red first...plus I always wanted to be a redhead! My hair's a weird kind of slightly gingery-red brown atm.

And my hair doesn't have ANY dye on it so thankfully I don't have to understand mixing hair dyes...yet!

Okay...I'm hitting the chemist tomorrow and checking out what they have. Thanks for the encouragement! This sounds fun.

I think you'd look cute as a redhead! Post pics!

I've never really had the desire to dye my hair, though my hair does get quite auburn/reddish when I'm in the sun alot!

Yes, you need a yummy colour, Linz! Something rich and earthy...I'm seeing mahogany...sublime...not too red, not too brown. Woodsy. Something that catches light.

What do you think?

Somehow, you sound like someone that should definitely be crowned in reds.

Kate.

Hi Linz!!

Well, I just went to the salon yesterday to get my hair cut and coloured and the price tag was definitely enough to make me re-think not doing it at home. I haven't had great experience dying my hair at home because I've tried to do high lights and have ended up pretty 'yellow' at times.

I think red hair would probably look really nice too, but beware!! I dunno how pale your skin is, but some red dyes can make you look ULTRA pale. I had red and blonde highlights put into my hair a few years ago and if you look at the pictures of me at the time I look so so ill because of how completely WHITE my face looks. I'd definitely make sure to get one that isn't too crazy red if you are worried about not liking it so you don't have to worry about fixing it.

Good luck, we definitely want pictures!!

**hugs**

I dyed my hair this morning and am still getting used to it...I *think* I love it. It's a very rich colour and seems to set off my complexion better....I think. I picked L'Oreal Coulour Experte 4.46 Morello Cheery Copper Red - it had a highlighter wand, but I don't think I put enough highlights in! Ah well, it's pretty good for my first attempt.

I'll post piccies when Si gets home with his photo-camera!

Oh, I can't wait for the pictures!!! I always dye my own hair, I've been using a color called Intense Auburn, its a dark red and I LOVE it!!! I'm glad yours turned out well! I tried to use the Loreal one with the highlight wand in it and it was a pain in the ass! I had thick streaks of highlights and spots without any. I found it too hard to do myself, if I had a friend to help, that might be a different story!

Linz, I'd STRONGLY recommend having a professional do it for you. My hair is fine and thin; I had my highlights done by a professional who did an excellent job. However, I'm losing hair something awful (hormones and old age, mixed with stress = hair loss!), so damaging my hair even more was not a good idea.

See a pro!

You said you were naturally a dark-headed person...my interest is piqued!! All of these great photos of new "do's" has me really interested!! I AM SOOOOO TIRED OF MY HAIR!!!!

I used to be a sort of light brown/dirty blonde until I had kids...now my hair is almost black!! I DO NOT like it! I never have! But, I've never had money to get involved with a professional keep-it-up stylist. So, if I just want to lighten it a shade, and add some life to this mess, what do you suggest??? I feel like I look horrid with such dark hair!

I have thin hair too, because of stress, poor nutrition, and screwed up hormones. How do you find a good person who knows how to cut and highlight thin (and getting thinner ) hair?

Do you go to Mario Triccoci or something like that?

it is definitly the BEST!

Its a little bit pricey for home hair dye, but it works fabulously and I love it!

I have really fine thin hair, and I try to use the best at home hair color bc once I used really really cheap stuff (think 5.99 a box) and I fried the top layer of hair. In fact some of it actually fell off halfway down the shaft!!!

(disclaimer... 5.99 is PERFECT for some hair types.. I just have baby fine thin hair!)

Anyways.. I use the 8.3 or the 8.0! I mix it up by season. I love how it lets you highlight yourself too, and its pretty fool proof. I literally get asked where I get my hair done at least once a week!

POST PICS! CAN'T WAIT!

and my hair is so thick I look like Mufasa if I am not careful!

I use "Preference by Loreal" and have never had any problems. My natural color is a very dark brown. When I colored it a lighter brown my hair almost went red. I liked it but my hubby hated it...I thought the red warmed up my face a little.

I mix brown and black to get my hair to it's natural color and it works well.

Honestly, you just sound so bummed these days and well...it gives you cheer and enhances your natural blush!

I had a friend do mine this summer to save money and I have gone back to the professionals now! 1 she got dye on my bathroom walls and we had to paint again and 2 the color was way dark and like burgundy! yuck. I pay $35 now for a coloring at a house salon and had been paying $60 before that. I couldn't pay that forever. But a decent salon is fine- nothing fancy.

Bamagirl, I would advise using one of the Loreal products, the Excellance or Prefferance are my favorites. You should never go more than two shades from your color now without professional help. If you try to stray too far from what it is now, you might end up with a diaster! What I would do is pick the color that most closely matches your hair now and go two shades down from that. I don't ever remember seeing a picture of you so its kinda of hard to give color advice without knowing what you look like!! Anything with ash in the title has the potential to be grayish or greenish so I would stay clear.

Yup I shampoo most days as my hair gets so knotted that only shampooing will allow me to get a comb through it. But I do use loads of conditioner, inc. leave in conditioner that I get from my salon - that stuff is the only thing that keeps the frizz under control.

...to give a bit of reddy glints and shines to dark hair! Maybe you could try one of the rinses to make dark hair more chestnuty (usually called mahognany or something like that) and see if you like more red? My beautician also suggested Loreal. I'm seriously going to look into this over the weekend. I am soooo tired of my hair! I'll remember not to get ash anything, and I will try to work up enough nerve to actually do it! (I'm so chicken with color!) My hair is almost black it is such a dark brown, so I'll just have to try it won't I?

Oh I finally computed this. The thing with shampoo is that they all contain ammonium laurel sulfate which strips hair. That is why we condition afterward. My hair feels like dry straw when I shampoo and so I do it only when I feel the absolute need and then everyday I condition really good and scrub my scalp with conditioner. I never had hair that didn't get frizzy and now my mop is smooth and ringletty. So the thing is to reduce shampoo days until you find where you can be and load on conditioner everyday. If you don't have huge rodeo hair like me you don't have to worry about it, but generally curly hair is dry. BTW my hair doesn't smell or anything! It smells nice and looks pretty nowadays. Not like a few years ago.
