I am new to your group and am a 37-year old female newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I have a 10 month old breast fed baby and have been given a prescription for Rowana enemas for 30 days. I have been advised by my gastroentrologist to wean my baby because this is the most effective treatment for my condition. I have been actively bleeding rectally for approximately 3 months and thought, as my primary care physician did, that I had postpartum hemhorroids. Please write to me with your results from the Rowana enemas and your thoughts on continuing breastfeeding while undergoing this treatment. Thank you.

I am currently on Rowana enemas because I am also bleeding. I would recommend to stop breast feeding until you have stopped the enemas. I don't have children but I always thought that when you breast feed, you don't want to be taking any meds. As for the enemas, be strong and don't give in to using the bathroom. I find that after the first hour, I can keep it in for 8 hours. Make sure you lay on your left side for 30 minutes to allow the medication to spread in your colon. And don't get up!! If you get up, don't stand or sit because gravity will make you want to go. It is very important to keep the medication in for about 6-8 hours. After 4 days, I noticed my bleeding went away. I stopped taking it with my doc. approval. Now, 3 weeks later, I'm on it again. I also noticed my poop is black from it. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Hope you feel better. monicalutzke@yahoo.com
