I do have diabetes

I cannot believe this. I sat in the doctor's office this morning and just sobbed. I have had such a bad year between the back and foot problems, IBS, vision problems (now explained!!!), and now this. They gave me a machine to prick my finger twice a day, and told me I have to get this under control with my diet.

I freaked out when the nurse started saying for me to stay away from carbs. All I could think of was they were going to take my white bread, potatoes, and rice away----the soluble fiber I need for my tummy. I have spend the past 2 years getting my tummy problems under control ---and now they want me to eat more protein.

They set me up to attend a 3-hour diabetes nutritional seminar Tuesday at the hospital. That will help since I have no idea what I should and should not be eating to keep my blood sugar under control.

I just want to feel better. I'm so tired and irritable that I just want to crawl in bed---and I cannot quench my thirst!

Several members of my family have diabetes (both young and old) and I can safely say that it is easy to manage it and you will feel so much better with your blood sugar under control.

Don't worry about needles as I inject myself with a pen they use to inject insulin every day, and it doesn't hurt at all. Plus my grandad who has the biggest needle phobia in the word checks his blood sugar several times a day with no problem.

Good luck and I hope things get better soon.

What was your glucose reading? My hubby is diabetic and is on meds to control it. He pricks his finger twice a day, too.

I know it will be very hard to stay away from bread, potatoes, etc. but hopefully the nutritionist will be able to help you with some things you can eat. I'm sure it will be a little confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it.

There are also a lot of sites on the web with some good low carb and low sugar recipes.

Good luck

oh no BL!!

I'd just try to educate yourself as much as possible on what you can and can't eat. I hope you'll find something yummy!

That sucks .....
Both my parents are/were diabetic so it is a matter of time for me. I am having a fasting blood done on Friday.
My mother was able to control hers with pills and diet. My father is 86 and on insulin and has been for quite a few years.
The basis of my diet is carbs too, so I can't imagine what you will do, but there are diabetics here with me that eat the same amt. of carbs that I do and are under control.
Good luck.

I'm so sorry BL but maybe now that you know what is wrong, you can control and start to feel better. I don't know anything about eating for diabetes but hopefully they can come up with some safe belly food and food to help control this. Big hugs and lots of love!

My friends son was diagnosed with juvenile onset diabetes last year. I went to Sam Club and found a cookbook for diabetics. The recipes looked yummy and at least it is a start until you get used to it.

Diabetes runs in my family as well...my fathers generation has it bad. I think it skips and since my kids are adopted it might end here!

I will be praying for you...you will get used to it and I am sure you will be alright. One thing you DIDN't need huh?

Hugs to you, sweetheart. You WILL get it under control. Take the seminar. It IS possible to comprimise your diet for diabetes AND IBS. I have a cousin who is doing just that. She lives in Danville, VA. My Dad has type II Diabetes and manages it extremely well. It will be an adjustment, but you'll make it.
Hugs and lots of love and prayers,
Alicia.

D-I-A-B-E-T-E-S. Nasty stuff. NASTY! My grandmother had it and ultimately died from it. She gave herself shots every single day, then went out to the bakery and bought herself sweet rolls. I remember when she developed an aneurism on her heart and the doctor told my mother to take care of my grandmother 24/7, making sure she stuck to her diet, or else the aneurism would pop and she would die.

When I found my grandmother sneaking a slice of bread in the middle of the night, I flew into a rage. Then I overheard her praying in bed at night, "Dear God, please take me!" It tore me up. She was a sweet women who deserved a better granddaughter than I. God granted her wish; she died shortly afterwards.

Don't tell anyone, BL, but I changed my diet drastically from The Program. My IBS wasn't getting any better, so I figured I had nothing to lose but to eat only healthy stuff that I might be able to lose weight on, and damn the IBS! I cut out a LOT of carbs, especially bread, and immediately began feeling better (and lost weight). That's when my IBS went into remission, believe it or not. Besides breaking a LOT of the diet rules, I'm eating red meat and loving it; I can't get enough of the stuff. Don't tell anyone.

Whenever I'm really hungry, I dive into deli corned beef. Do you know how fantastic that stuff tastes? OMG! I tried making my own -- it took 4 days to marinate/pickle that stuff! -- but it was well worth it. To die for.

I really don't miss bread, I really don't. Now that I know it doesn't agree with my IBS, I have no desire for it. I think we get to the point where we don't like the stuff that we know will make us sick.

Let us know what you learn in the nutrition class. It should be very interesting. Try to look on this as a new experience, BL. I know it's nasty stuff -- I remember what Grandma went through -- but we all have our cross to bear, and this one is obviously yours -- together with the IBS, vision, back and foot problems -- oy! However, I think once you learn the proper diet for YOU, you'll eventually start to feel better, and if you don't do as my Grandmother did, you should live a long and happy life.

Wow. It helps to know what you're dealing with--it can be managed. It's a total lifestyle change. Just about everyone on my father's side of the family, including my father is diabetic and I'm ultra-cautious re: diet as I age. It hurts, though, witnessing the unnecessary demise of those I love due to their lifestyle choices.

Good luck. I'm happy that you know what you're dealing with, and that you intend to be informed.
Kate.

it is doable.. one thing you might want to do is ask the doctor if due to your other health issues you can get a referral under insurance to a dietician/nutritionist and have them work with you to find a happy medium to settle on for dietary needs to balance both... if not- there are a lot of posts on here.. and I can try to help some... its just not as easy sometimes... I go the other way but have friends and family who are diabetic...

I will be praying for you...don't worry about the carbs. I have been steering clear of them, too, because they cause me to bloat up like a balloon!!! So, it won't be all that bad. I eat brown rice instead of white rice. It's more nutritious and it doesn't make me blow up....can you eat brown rice on the diabetic diet??? I don't know....Keep your chin up. God has a plan for you!

My husband the household cook has diabetes, so I'm on a modified IBS-diabetes diet right now. The totally safe things for both of us are: barley, brown rice, sweet potatoes, cooked greens, mushrooms, fish, white meat chicken, white meat turkey, and rye bread (ok, the latter in moderation!). And he's really upped his fruit consumption since his diagnosis and it doesn't affect his blood sugar much at all.

If pricking your finger gets you down, look into the testers where you can prick your arm or leg or butt. I think the phrase to look for is "alternate site". The husband guy says that he doesn't feel a thing with his tester, and it requires only a teeny amount of blood.

Oh, and walking and other exercise helps both IBS and diabetes a huge amount!
