AGAIN!
ANOTHER BAD DENTIST EXPERIENCE!!

After waiting for waaay over a month to get my first appointment for my crown and a filling done, I went in today.
After all my bad experiences, it is an understatement to say that I was nervous when I arrived. I was shaking and I had to take like 4 immodium after not eating for the previous 24 hours and my stomach still was churning and awful.
They take me in, and give me a valium because I was really freakin'.
They start to freeze me... this is the part that scares me, so I try and just struggle through it. And I do. And then nothing. So more needles, more freezing. Still noting. More needles. Are you bloody kidding me? It won't freeze. I got through the really hard part, and nothing. So they sent me away!!! After 2 HOURS of getting needles, they sent me away and I have another appointment for next Monday at another office where they are going to give me the laughing gas and THEN then the needles to try to make me frozen enough to get the work done. Now my mouth is killing me, even after taking extra strength tylenol and it hrts every time I swallow. All that, and no work done.
Needless to say, I am beyond frustrated and traumatised. I am so tired of going to the <censored>ing dentist!!! Why have none of my other friends had crowns? Why do MY teeth have all these problems?? *stomps her feet* NOFAIRNOFAIR!!

Okay, done temper tantrum. To make today even better, I had to go to the eye doctor and turns out I am having a bad reaction to SOMETHING and there are bumps and rough areas all over the inside of my eyelids that have scratched my corneas and made them inflamed and dry. I can't wear my contacts, have to put drops in 4 times a day and had to buy more expensive solution and rinse. I wish it were me, not Adrian, getting the laser eye surgery. He doesn't even want the surgery, and can see fine without glasses.. I am blind as a bat and would kill for the surgery. Ironic, no?

What a crapola day! Adrian's Brit friend is here visiting, my mouth is so sore from all the needles that I am at home on the couch while they are out on the town.
Tomorrow had better be a better day, or I will have some serious butt to kick.. I dunno who's, but I'll find someone!!
Thanks for letting me vent, guys! (As always!)

I feel so bad for you. I am one of those who are terrified of dentists. I have usually been able to hold it together in the waiting room, but as soon a I get in the chair I start crying and cannot stop. I have to be put to sleep with sodium pentathol. They only use that for extractions though. Needless to say I have a lot of bad teeth because I just won't go untill I am in BAD pain.

Hey Steph,

I'm sorry about all this. I can kinda relate to the dentist thing -- I don't hate going at all, but I've had no dental coverage (and no money) since starting law school, so I haven't been in 2 years. I finally made an appt for Monday. I'll have to pay out of pocket, but I'm freaking out about all the things that could be wrong with my teeth. Plus I'm definitely either clenching or grinding my teeth -- they feel pretty weird. So, hopefully he doesn't charge me an arm and a leg when I go.

As for the eyes -- I'm pretty sure I've had what you have. Did the doc say GPC or Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis? I know, it's a sexy name. I had to stop wearing my contacts for 3 months during my Junior year of college. I developed an allergy to the preservatives in normal contact lense solution, and had to switch to the kind with the little vial and the bubbling disk -- is that what you're using? Once you get the go-ahead to wear lenses again, ask the doc if you can use Focus Night & Day. That's what I'm using now -- I put in a new pair, and wear and sleep in them for 30 days, never having to take them out. Then after 30 days I chuck them and put in a new pair. The only problem is that they are not designed to correct astigmatism. So, if that's a problem for you, you won't be able to wear them. I have a moderate astigmatism in my right eye, but the doc just made the other correction a little stronger, and I can deal. By the way, you say you're blind as a bat -- My contact lense Rx is -8 in my left and -8.5 in my right. Contacts only go up to -10, so I hope I slow down!!! I'm going to look into LASIK as soon as I can afford it.

And on the subject of annoying doctors --- let me tell you about my pulmonologist. I have asthma, and used to go to this lady in NJ by my parents. She was fine until she randomly went crazy and left her practice. It didn't really matter though, because I was moving to NYC anyway and just found a doc here. He continued to prescribe me the same meds she had prescribed, and I've been taking Singulair every night for about 3.5 years now. It really makes a difference. The lady doc used to prescribe me a year's worth at a time. New doc gives me 3mo at a time. So, I call the office every 3 months and they refill. This has been working for a year. Then, I call on Wednesday, and the receptionist who barely speaks english takes down my info and says she'll call it in. I call the pharmacy later that day, and the next day. No Rx called in. I call the doc's office, get the answering service, leave a message. Called pharm again yesterday, no Rx. Called doc's office. New, english-speaking receptionist tells me there is a prob, because I haven't been there since 9/04, they won't refill it for me. Not even enough to get me through to my next visit! So then the doc gets on the phone and explains it to me, in a very lectury voice, saying well I have to see you once in a while if you want me to keep prescribing for you. I say that's fine and that I totally understand, but that if their policy is every 3 months, or every 12, or whatever, they should make that known so I don't run out of meds. Now I have an appt for Wednesday, and he'll be checking my lung capacity after I've been off the meds for a week. Does that make sense to anyone????? Grrr.

Plus, in addition to the dentist on Monday and the Pulmonologist on Wednesday, I'm finally going to the student health center on Tuesday to deal with my thyroid. I stopped by that office last week and told the doc my symptoms, and she said to sort out my insurance (I had to renew) and come back. So, hopefully they'll test me on Tuesday. Nobody said anything about having to fast before the blood test, but I'm going to call on Monday to see if I need to. At this point, I actually hope they find I'm hypothyroid, because I'd have an explanation for the 10 pounds I've gained in the last 2 years, and for the fact that I am constantly unbearably cold. We'll see.

Anyway I'm not trying to one-up you here -- just going with the theory that misery loves company, and I'm right there with you! I hope your mouth feels better soon -- try rubbing some scotch on it with a q-tip.

Best,
Panda

Doctors and dentists suck. I'm in the same dentist situation you are, Amanda, except it's been even longer since I've been to the dentist.

Amanda, make sure you get a copy of your blood tests yourself once the doctor reviews them. My hypothyroidism was just diagnosed by my fibro doc, but the doc at student health didn't catch it.

Good luck with your doctor and dentist dealings, girls! My problem lately isn't with my doc, it's with the shipping company that lost my meds so I can't start taking them until after I get back from London!

My contacts are -8.5 and -9.5.

Don't you just hate it when people are like -2 and say they're blind??? Puh-lease!

First sympathies to all poor Stephie, I HATE needles and dentists.

I would like to join your blind as a bat club too!

I went to the optician at the weekend too to get a new contact lens prescritpion. They tell me that I haven't been there in FOUR years for contact lense checks! (I have had two pairs of new glasses since then but I rarely wear lenses and use focus dailies)

Anyway I was wearing -5.75 and -5.25 but my new ones are -6.5 and -6!!! I couldn't even read the first line of the test with my old ones in and the optician said that I wasn't safe to drive with them. Now I do only wear them socialising but would sometimes have driven short distances with them in, kinda scary....

I had completely different prescriptions in each eye, and I was always whining about how awful my left eye was. It was -3.75! I feel like such a baby now.

I just had lasik done a couple months ago and am pretty much 20/20 now. I LOVE not having to deal with contacts/glasses!

Sorry my response is so late, but sorry to hear you had such a tough time...that's crazy! I really hope it goes better with the gas. Could they maybe give you some other pain medications (maybe morphine or something ) so that you can tolerate all the sticking until they get you properly frozen...just doesn't seem right that you should have to suffer like that

Also, I hope things go ok with the eye doctor and they get that straightened out for you quick and easy

Steph, so sorry about the dentist, what a nightmare!! I couldn't imagine! I've had two crowns but both went as well as could be expected. I always take a Xanax (like Valium) before I have any big work done and ALWAYS get the gas!! I hope your next appt goes better!!

Panda gave you some good info on the eye dr thing. It does sound like GPC and its relatively commonly. It can be caused by an allergic reaction or just plain irratation. Like if you weren't cleaning your lenses well enough or were trying to wear each pair for too long before replacing it. What brand of cl's are you currently wearing and which solution were you using?

Night and Day lenses by Ciba are a newer silicone lens and are designed to allow more oxygen to your eye, which is why you can wear them for 30 days at a time! They are a good lens but not everyone can keep them in that long without giving their eyes a break for a night and they can be a bit pricey as I know you are on a budget. Accuvue makes a lens called Accuvue Advance with Hyrdoclear, its also a very good lens and is a bit cheaper.

Panda, just a note, there ARE contacts that you can get over -10.00 now!! I don't think the night and days go past that but they do make other brands that go higher if you ever get to that point!! If you need something for your astigmatism, ask the dr about the new Accuvie Advance with Hydroclear for Astigmatism!! You shouldn't sleep in them for 30 days straight but they are a great lens and we are having a lot of good success fitting them!

that sounds scary, having -8.5 and -9.5!

I am up to like -4.5 I think and I thought I was as blind as a bat, and feared that if I kept going worse I would be blind one day! Guess I should feel lucky, I know that it feels pretty scary not having glasses on or contacts in and looking around with MY vision.
