My husband has had IBS we think for around 10 years - I say we think because he hasn't been formally diagnosed. Today he went to the doctor and told her he thought he might have IBS and ran through symptons. She said that unless there was a family history of bowel cancer she wouldn't suggest he have a colonscopy. That surprised me and that was where the discussion ended. Just wondering what other doctors recommended when you bring up IBS? Surely they should at least consider sending him to a dietician.
Thanks,
Sandra.

Not a dietician but a GI (gastro-intestinal) doc for sure. And the colonoscopy is NOT to just check for cancer...it's a great check for IBDs too.
He also needs to have blood tests, stool sample tests, etc before he can be diagnosed properly. Symptoms are no way near enough!
If she won't refer him or run the tests, get a second opinion.
In the meantime, starting this diet could give your hubby some relief.

Thanks, I can't believe that it took me so much encouragement to get him to ask and she was so dismissive. Unfortunately, it's the first time we have been to her so I had no idea what she would be like. And as we have moved a lot over the last few years we don't have a regular doctor yet.
As for the diet I have made some of the changes recommended here over the last year and they are helping a lot. Still have some way to go though.
Thanks,
Sandra.

I never had one and my doc said as long as I was able to control things with diet and meds that there was no need for one! I did have blood test, stool test, and a ultra sound done. and I hope your husband is doing well

Well the only way IBS can be properly diagnosed is if everything else is ruled out. I had a colonoscopy even though there is no history of cancer in my family. Please get another opinion from a GI doctor.
