I figured I'd let you all know about my mouse and my toilet since I posted about them both.

Today, I finally fixed my toilet seat and changed it. The first attempt frustrated me so much that I said screw it and lived with the broken one for a few days (I was away from home the last 8 days.. so its not as bad as it seems, no one was using it).

Let it be said that it was a hellish task. I took me about 45 minutes of intensive labor with a screwdriver that fell in the toilet bowl twice, and pliers.

Next, I FINALLY killed a mouse.. except I was away for 8 days so lord knows when it died and there was plenty more mouse poop to take care of.

So, I bought those traps where it kills the mouse and its covered so you dont' see it. however, somehow it was leaking and smelly and gross brown liquid was all underneath it. NASTY.

I tied a pillowcase around my mouth a nose, threw on rubber gloves and lysoled the heck outta the cabinet. I also threw some poison in there to kill anymore. Anyways.. I rushed out onto the balcony with the dead mouse in the bag and I swear my neighbor pulling in thought I was a robber (with a pillowcase tied around my head)! ha

Anyways.. New question.. I'm sure its not but how can you be sure that its a mouse and not a rat as well. Some of the poops are bigger than others. Not any of them are much bigger than a cooked grain of rice, but I still want to be sure.

Hey cutie!

Gee, is this in your new condo? RATS? Oy....

Well, Girlfriend, all I know is that rats make one helluva lotta noise. If it were a rat, I think you'd hear it. I know WE did when we had a rat in the summer cottage on the lake in Oregon. He made a LOT of racket, especially scratching on the door when we locked him out! Oy.

I kinda think you shoulda looked inside that trap to see if you caught a rat or a mouse. But I'd bait another trap if I were you. AND, be sure to keep the toilet seat lid DOWN all the time; rats will climb in there and drown, and you'll have one helluva mess to clean up! (They blow up really big with all that water and wrap themselves all around the inside of the toilet, filling it up! It's really, REALLY gross! (Although, kudos to you -- you're gettin' pretty darn good at it!)

I'd also check with the neighboring condo and see if they have problems with mice or rats. BTW, you don't have any bird feeders outside, do you? They draw mice! (I found out the hard way.)

Thanks for your post about my bro. Yeah, I'm really jazzed to have my family back. Ironically, I came down with IBS right after we became estranged. Do ya think now that we're back together I'll be able to lose the IBS? Huh, do ya, maybe huh???

I should have probably peeked, but I was too grossed out and it smelled nasty!!! I'm almost 100% positive that its just a moue and not a rat because the opening to get into my trap was less than 3/4 of an inch tall and wide and it didnt' weigh a whole lot when I picked up the trap to throw it out.

Anyways LUCKILY whatever it is hasn't ventured far from this one cabinet which is sorta all by itself in a random area. They did however chew a nice little hole to get in there, but to be honest that hole may have always been there and they just use it to get in and out. The only place that hole leads is in between our walls!

I dont' have any birdfeeders or anything of the sort.. just a tiny little condo! and to be honest, if I see a rat in my toilet all puffed up i'd just about die. I hate rodents, blood and yucky stuff!

as for your bro.. I hope that the ibs does go away now! you never know! i'm sure the onset was definitly in connection to it.

*laughing* I should have remembered to tell you that the tools would fall in the toilet when tackling the seat. Sorry. At least it was only twice instead of like my happenings. Was just a horrible uncoordinated situation with me dropping just about all the different tools into the bowl. At least it was brand new and never used so I didn't have to worry to much.

I saw you responded to my last post about the screws being decorative, so I am guessing yours weren't. Haven't a clue what they were thinking when they build these things. They never consult the people who will have to replace parts to see if its easy or do able.

YUCKIES on the mouse. I am going to keep my fingers crossed for you that it isn't a rat. I agree that if it were a rat you would hear it scratching. They aren't the most discrete roommates. Hope it was just the one.

WELL WELL WELL..

I just looked in my other cabinet on the other side of the sink and guess what I found.

MOUSE CRAP

this cabinet is filled to the brim with a foreman grill.. cooking sheets etc (stuff I hardly ever use, so when I checked a week or two ago and didn't find droppings I figured it was fine).

ugh there is mouse crap sitting on top of my foreman and all of my other stuff in there. PLUS there is no possible way I could ever crawl in there and do a good cleaning. Its a corner cabinet so its a tiny opening and more more space in the back.

PLUS I have about 10 boxes of pasta in there. none of them open (stop and shop had a sale)... however there are lovely little mouse poop suprises on the boxes too. YUCK.

so.. do you think I should throw everything away (all the pasta bc there is poop on the boxes) and as for the pots and pans.. is running them through the dishwasher enough.

Also.. any tips on how to repair any cracks that may be found in my wall. I read you could buy some polyurethane foam to repair cracks and holes.. anyone heard of this.

ugh.. now i'm deathly afraid to remove everything from this cabinet because I'm scared a million mice will once again fly out at me. WHY ME

I got this from a pest control site.
I used to keep all my dry goods in the fridge.

Pest Control

House mice are known carriers of salmonellosis, or bacterial food poisoning. In fact, Salmonella bacteria in mouse feces and urine are primary reasons for mouse control in restaurants and other food-handling establishments.

Unlike rats and many other rodents, house mice are not involved with plague, a disease caused by a bacterium that spreads from host to host by infected fleas. But house mice do carry rickettsialpox, a disease-like spotted fever that is transmitted to humans by the mouse mite, Liponyssoides sanguineus (Lackman, 1963).

Make sure you're knowledgeable about other diseases associated with house mice in the urban environment:

* Allergies. The cause of this increasing problem is not understood. Allergens from house mouse hair are frequently associated with asthma in schools (Amr et al., 2003), homes and workplaces (Phipatanakul et al., 2000). Shed hairs can build up in carpets, as well as under and around kitchen appliances and other areas inhabited by mice.
* Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). This can be carried in house mice urine and feces. Although usually causing nonlethal flulike symptoms in adults, LCMV can pass through the placenta and cause devastating defects in newborn infants (Calderon, 2002). Approximately 20% of wild house mice are carriers (Calderon, 2002), and more than 30% of premises may be infected (Mortenson and Rotramel, 1976). LCMV and LCMV birth defects both appear to be commonly overlooked or misdiagnosed (Barton et al., 1995).
* Leptospirosis. Although usually considered a disease of rats, Leptospirosis (one form is known as Weil's disease) can be transmitted in the urine of house mice and other mammals. Patients experience flulike symptoms that may persist for several months.
* Hantavirus. "Four Corners disease" is frequently lethal, transmitted when humans inhale or ingest mouse feces or urine. House mice do not appear to be involved in the outbreaks of hantaviruses in the US, all of which have been associated with native rodents (Rotramel, 1997). However, house mice have been implicated in outbreaks of similar diseases in Europe (Diglisic et al., 1994).
* Lyme disease. Borrelia burgdorferi, a microorganism carried by ixodid ticks, is the cause of this disease. Although house mice have not been implicated in the transmission of Lyme disease in this hemisphere (Oliver et al., 1999), they are suspected of helping to maintain the disease in Russia and Europe (Gern et al., 1998). In a Denmark study, 100% of house mice showed evidence of infection by the Lyme disease organism (Frandsen et al., 1995).
* Toxocariasis and larva migrans. House mice are hosts for one life stage of Toxocara cati and Toxocara canis, two roundworms that parasitize dogs and cats but can also cause a disease in humans known as larva migrans. Children contract larva migrans when they play in soil that has been contaminated with cat or dog feces. They transfer worm eggs from their hands to their mouths. The eggs hatch in the children's stomachs and the resulting larvae migrate through their bodies before forming cysts under the skin and in body organs. (Dubinsky et al., 1995).

Carol thank you for the posting. I think this is really informative for all of us. I had no idea those little buggers could carry all that. It makes so much more sense now on how some of these things spread. I think the risk of children from all this is probably even more scary.

my question to you is, did you find the dead mice, or did they die and decompose in areas you could not find?

Also, was the smell unbearable?

I just bought one of those wave thingys.. I'm not sure if it willl work. Apparently the box said that it will only keep away mice on the counter and can't work through walls or cupboards so we shall see.

did yours help through walls.. or should I assume the thing won't work at all?

If there is mouse poop on it, then they have most likely peed on the box, too. Ingesting rodent crap can kill you. It's not worth the price of pasta.

Can/would you get a cat? We live out in the country and we struggled with mice for over a year until we finally decided we had no choice but to get a cat. We have two cats now and the mouse problem has virtually disappeared.

DO NOT use mouse poison. We made that mistake. They go off and die somewhere and you go crazy trying to find it, and by the time you find it, the body is this disgusting decomposed mess that you literally have to SCRAPE off the floor. OK, sorry to be gross, but now you know what you're in for!

Use mousetraps. Bait them with peanut butter -- every mouse's favorite food. We've tried several different fancy kinds of mouse traps but the plain old-fashioned ones work the best. The only problem is having to steel yourself to pry up the trap and take the dead mouse out. Luckily in my house it's DH's job to empty the mousetraps.

You can also stuff holes with steel wool -- they won't chew through that. No guarantee they won't just chew a hole right next to the steel wool, though.

Unfortunately, once you get mice, it is really tough to get rid of them. But I wish you luck anyway. Count yourself lucky -- at least you don't have snakes as well, like we do.

I am glad to know that I am not the only Iowan with snake problems. My parents seem to always have two every year in their house. I usually have a few on my patio laying in the sun...which freaks my dog and I out. The steel wool seems to also work against snakes from what I have been told. I personally just rather not have them around.

Good thought about tossing the pasta since where there is poop, there is pee.

ugh gross.. thanks for the reply!

as for getting a cat.. I'm not the biggest fan of them.. although I would get one if it would help. Problem is that they are only going into the cupboards from the walls. They haven't actually come out into the apartment. So I don't think a cat would have a huge effect.

I live by myself and dont' have a boyfriend so the thought of disposing traps drives me nuts. I did put one down that was covered and guts still leaked out of it. EWWW made me not want to try anymore traps.

Ideally there was only this one guy and I killed him. ha what are the chances that mice travel in ones?

Where there is one mice, there are many others. Sorry. Just a fact of life! You would be amazed at the tiny spaces they can squeeze through, so most likely you have not seen them elsewhere because they have no interest in moving beyond your nice warm kitchen full of food. A cat will help in that most mice will stay away just because of the scent. But, I would do this as a last resort. I love cats but I am not a good pet owner. I hate litter boxes, I hate cat hair, I hate scratched-up furniture, I hate not being able to leave on a vacation without worrying about them. That's why I fought against the mice for so long.

yuck, why did its guts leak out? Did it sit there a long time? The traps we use just break their necks. No blood and guts involved.

Didn't you say earlier that the association was supposed to take care of pest control? Are they doing anything about it?

two per YEAR? We get dozens. Mostly they are in the basement. (we don't kill them ... we "relocate" them a couple miles away to the other side of the river, so sometimes I wonder if they are the same !@#$ing snakes.) We are doing remodeling and have found old snakeskins in the walls and attic, which is pretty creepy. I am pretty used to it by now. We just don't know how to keep them from coming inside. We have an old crumbly limestone foundation and a crawl space under the kitchen and both of these, I think, contribute to the problem.

We had a snake dangling from a crevice in the basement for ages a couple years ago. We tried pulling on it but it wouldn't come out. Eventually it died. I was really sure that we would pull hard on it to get it out and it would come apart or something hideous like that, but it came out in one piece. I felt sorry for the poor guy.

Mine has a 10,000 sq ft radius and it really does work. Get the kind that hooks into the ground wiring in addition to the ultrasonic noise. It sends out electronic pulses through all the wiring in the building, supposedly.

Hmmm...I would have to say I am better off with not that many. I know that when we were having problems at my parents I called the DNR and they were really great about giving me advice on extraction of them and how to relocate them. Only once did the DNR actually have to go out to their house and remove him. Come to find out he was a dangerous little one that they didn't recommend we handle.

House remodeling seems to attract them and mice. All those little places to sneak in. At least it hasn't gotten cold yet that they are coming in from the fields. The old foundations seem to be the ones they get into. Any chance a sealant foam in the cracks would work?

Wish I can answer your question, but how awful to have mice or maybe rats.

Do you rent? If so you should have the landlord take care of the problem. The next step for you is to call in the MEN in the suites to spray those mice out of there.

The house I had mice in was less than 2500 square feet...a mouse or two no smell.

I grew up in a house twice that size and due to the acreage behind us we had mice in that home (pretty much the basement) as well. I am no stranger to D-con but never smelled "rotten rodent" .

Thank goodness there are no mice in this house. We have an outdoor cat and I believe that helps.

Okay..well..this comes from experience...unfortunately! My husband's old apartment had RATS!! Yup....big, wet rats. They came from the sewer/toilet!! I know I know....freaking GROSS!!
I think......I might be wrong here.......but you can tell RATS from MICE b/c rats are bigger and have long tails...mice are usually small and have short tails...
Ohhhh...that has brought back soo many sick memories!
If possible, I would call on the men in the white suits to spray!

Ewww is right!! I would think they are mice, I've heard rats are very big! I think you are very brave for cleaning that mess up on your own! I would be calling the rental office or association or whatever like every 15 minutes until they send someone over!! Ick!!

Oh, and I agree, if the mice pooped on the boxes of pasta, they probably peed too! Not worth the couple of dollars for a box of pasta to me!
