I've been off birth control for a month now, and I am in hell! I'm having debilitating bouts of depression. My D is awful -- I used up an entire bottle of Levsin in two weeks. My skin is breaking out. I am constantly gripped by horrible, biting, pinching abdominal pain. I wake up each morning feeling like I have been hit, if not by a truck, at least by a full-size station wagon. I did have my period right on time, only I am bleeding sooo much I can't imagine where it is all coming from (and it's STILL GOING ON). It's been so horrible that I am tempted to go back on birth control. Maybe I could just try missing a couple pills here and there and conceiving that way.

One bright spot ... my new GI has me on a mega-dose of zinc and I took it for the first time last night and today. Although I do feel like I am going to puke, I haven't had D today (yet?). So maybe that will help.

I need some encouragement!!! Please provide me with inspiring anecdotes of going off the pill and coping. If you went off the pill and had absolutely no problems, please make up a horror story with a happy ending to pacify me.

Hi Jen,

Well, you're talkin' to the wrong gal. I've never been on birth control, never needed it. I've also never had a period. Long story, you don't wanna hear it.

However, there's one thing I can talk about with the best of womankind: hormones! OMG, this stuff can throw off your entire system like you wouldn't believe. I've been on estrogen since I was 13. I'm 61 now.

I just wonder if your problem is the lack of estrogen that you were getting with the birth control pills that you aren't getting now. Have you spoken with your gyno about your hormones? I'd be willing to bet they're the culprit.

BTW, it's interesting to note that I can get cramps if I take my estrogen too early in the morning, before my tummy has a chance to "wake up." Now I've learned to "coat" my tummy first with some instant oatmeal.

Hormones really play such a big part in our entire bodily functions, more so than we realize.

In my next life, I'm comin' back as a whale.

Bev.

Oh sweetie...do I understand or WHAT????!!!
It is DEF going to get better. Seriously. I was on the pill for five years and I came off it 2 days before I moved to NYC to start a brand new life after marrying my New Yorker husband...it was an emotional time anyway...but LORD! I felt like I had been hit by a truck too. D and C and both at the same time. Nausea. Depression. Bloating. Loads of zits. Now I am 11 months off it and I have developed a 33 day cycle. It took me about 4 months to get a regular cycle...my first period was 45 days off the pill...and mine happened to be light...but now they are heavier. We are all different. But seriously...don't go back on the pill...it will confuse your body even more. Hang in there. Eat really simply food and if you need to sob and then laugh at the same time due to the hormones...do it!! ONe thing my husband was happy about was that the pill completely took away my sex drive in the last year so as soon as I went off it I was crazy for sex!! That was a good thing...even if I was a pizza face for a while.
I am currently having reaaaally bad PMS. I discovered from going off the pill that I have one good easy month and one bad month...this is a bad month. I am nauseous, have D...so queasy. But my husband commented that I am nowhere near as zitty as I was when I first went off the pill.
So I really understand what you are going through...get some exercise that gives you a good sweat...it really helps. Good luck!

I am so glad you said that about the sex drive! I've been off the pill a month now and I still have NO sex drive, but I'm hoping once I've had a couple regular periods it'll come back. The last couple years my sex drive has completely disappeared. It is awful when you are 23 years old and would rather reread the Chronicles of Narnia than have sex. I also blame the IBS, as I defy ANYONE to feel sexy after forty-five minutes doubled over in the bathroom.

Bev, I'm sure it's my evil hormones that are the culprit! I haven't talked to the doctor about it yet, though, since I'm sure all she'll say is that I need to give my system more time to "settle down". And hopefully it WILL settle down. I can't imagine still being like this in six months. Ugh! I'm crossing my fingers that I'll just have a couple rough months and then go back to normal.

BTW, it's good to see you posting. I know I'm one of those new unfamiliar faces to you, but I lurked here a long time before posting and have always enjoyed reading your posts.

Ok, I was on the pill for 18 years! Started it when I was 15 for horribly heavy periods and stayed on it until I was almost 33! During which time, I started to "piggy back" pills, so I would only have a period a few times a year! It was great!

I was SO worried when I stopped taking the pill that I would get those horrible periods again. Luckily, I was one of the rare women who's periods started up 28 days later and it was a normal period, not too heavy. I had heard so many horror stories about women having problems after stopping the pill. It can take 4-6 months to get things normal again.

With that being said, if its really bad, I wouldn't give it more than a couple of months before talking to my dr. You may be a quart or two low on estrogen or progesterone . You need to have your hormones checked on cycle day three for a base line, than several times again through out your cycle.

Since suffering three miscarriages and now being on more hormones than you could imagine, I can most definitley tell you that hormones play a HUGE factor in how you feel and whats going on with your body. You should also ask your dr for a good prenatal vitamin, now. The earlier you start taking them the better and they will help you feel better now! Plus the bonus side effects are that they can cause C in some people, so if your D, that should help! They also make your hair and nails grow really fast! Extra B-6, B-12 and Vitamin E are also good, I'm taking them on top of my prescription prenatal!

Keep in mind also the body weight plays a big factor in both irregular periods and infertility. Being too thin or too heavy will cause low estrogen. It may be that your body is in kinda a hormonal withdrawal right now and a SSRI may help. Prozax and Zoloft are the safest if you are thinking about getting pregnant. It doesn't mean that you will have to take them for a long time but they may help get you through this time and make you more stable.

I forget who mentioned above that they spot for a week before they get their period? THis can be a sign that you have a LPD, luteal phase defect. Your letual phase is the second half of your cycle, the time after you ovulate until you get your period. If this time is shorted than about 12 days, you could be very low on progesterone. This can cause serious problems if you try to have a baby. I have a LPD, even though my LP is 14 days. I don't produce enough progesterone which is repsonsible for thickening the lining of the uterus.

I took my last pill at the end of May, and it has been chaos ever since! I have had majorly increased anxiety that my doctor believes is caused by my hormones going crazy. I was extremely regular before my 9.5 years on the pill, and I am hoping to return to that sometime soon! In the meantime, I have just finished a 13-day period!

I can definitely attest to the positive impact going off BCP has had on the ol' sex drive, though! The fact that I'm now in my late 20s doesn't hurt, either. Bring on that sexual peak! I'm lovin' it!

I had a hideous attack yesterday in the middle of work and had to go home. The drive is almost an hour and I made it home with literally about 2 seconds to spare. I'm at home again today. I was a wreck last night. Today I am better emotion-wise but IBS-wise I still kind of wish I were dead. One of those days

Thanks for the support, guys! I have a doctor's appointment next month and will get on prenatal vitamins and ask about getting hormones etc. checked.
