I was watching the evening national news last night and they had a story on about childern in jail in the phillippines. Most of them were in jail for no other reason than they were orphans and had no where to live and some petty theft, stealing food and such just to live. The living conditions were horrible. They crammed as many childern in a cell as possible, sometimes they were put into cells with real criminals, such as murders and pediphiles!!! These childern were in rags and didn't have enough food to eat and certainly didn't deserve to be living in prison!!
They showed a picture of a 5 year old girl crammed in a cell with many others. It really broke my heart, even WIll was upset. As someone who is suffering from infertility problems and realize the value of a child, I just wept at the pictures. I would take one of those childern in an instant and raise it as my own. Why is adoption so difficult and expensive when there are so many childern who need someone to take care of them and love them??
Anyways, just wanted to rant. Did anyone else see this segment on the news last night?

Oh! I saw this awhile ago....I was crying so hard! I couldn't even sleep that night at all....it was sickening, and I felt so awful. Don't you wish you could just take all of those children and bring them home???
I wish adoption wasn't so expensive and difficult too...you will make such a great mom, Michele.

I'm glad I missed it or I'd have been telling Bill I don't care that we decided not now for adoption and we need to find a way to take one of those poor children in! of course there are plenty of older kids in need of homes here in MI too...
good luck- and heh- maybe adoption is an option for the 2 of you too...

Seeing those segments breaks my heart too. I really have to give props to Angelina Jolie for all of the work she has done and for the 2 adoptions. I wish more wealthy people would use their money in that way. The average individual, like you and me, would like to have the opportunity to take in a child in need, and can't.

I didn't see this, but I would've been upset too. It doesn't seem fair that these children are suffering when there are so many people who would adopt them, but can't. It's not just the cost. Many countries object to Americans adopting their native children. It's hard to accept that they would rather them suffer. I guess it's a cultural thing that we just don't understand.
Michelle, if you are interested in adopting an older child, I can get you in touch with a woman I know who adopted two little girls (sisters, ages 6 and 8) from a Russian orphanage. They applied with the intent on adopting one child, but when they saw the video of these 2 sisters, they had to have them both. This couple had 2 boys of their own, so now they have 2 girls and 2 boys! The girls have adjusted beautifully and are darling! They are very lucky little girls to be in a wonderful home in America. They didn't have a toy of their own in the orphanage. They had to share what little they had with hundreds of other children, so you can imagine their joy the first Christmas here when they got their own toys!
I did a long feature story on this family for the newspaper. Let me know if you want to read it, and I will email it to you. I think I still have it on file. If you saw the photos the professional photographer took of the girls, you would melt!

One of Dr. Newmans friends (the dr I work for) just adopted a little boy and a little girl from Russia. It cost them almost $40,000! I just don't have that kind of money at all! I think if in the next 4-6 months, I don't seem like I'm goning to have a successful pregnancy, than I may see what kind of assistance programs are out there for average families for adoption. If you have that article on file, I'd love to read it!

I would love to adopt a child from either China or some other country that has a high rate of orphans. I would prefer a baby. I only wish there wasn't such a huge price tag along with it. It is hard to imagine paying off a loan for my child...

If it wasn't so expensive, I'd take one home with me in a heartbeat. It's sad that there are so many needy children and so many people who are willing to give them a home and the love....only to be stopped by the ridiculous cost of it all.
So, the children stay in jails while people who are willing to love and nurture them remain childless. This is so screwed up!
