We just found out the results of some biopsies my mom had done, and the doctor told her this afternoon that she has breast cancer. They don't know what kind, and they don't know what she'll have to do for treatment. I don't know what to do or what to say, I don't know anything about it. The one good thing is that they managed to get her an appointment with a surgeon (who I have to assume is an oncologist(sp?) or something...) tomorrow, so she will get more information then. So tomorrow I am going to go with her before I do my colonoscopy prep.
I am sort of stunned. I can't believe this is happening. Anyone who prays, I'd appreciate some for my mom. --Steph

Aw sweetie, how awful, especially right now. Well the only person I know who's had breast cancer was my Gran and she recovered just fine. So chin up, okay?

that's awful! I hope everything goes well with the surgeon. You really need to be there for her now. Cancer, in my opinion is just the worst word in the English language.
I'm praying they caught it at a very low stage. Big hugs honey!!!!!

Wow Stephie, that's horrible. My friends and I have decided that this is the worst summer we've ever had (one of them nicknamed it "The Summer of Suck"). We're going to celebrate it when it's finally over with cake and drinks. Would you like to come? I think you deserve a whole cake for surviving what you have lately.
I don't pray, but my thoughts will be with you.

Hope you and mom are holding up.

Steph,
I am sorry about the bad news. I will keep you and your mom in my prayers.
Like others have said, a lot of progress has been made in breast cancer research. Here's hoping your mom makes a speedy recovery!
Hugs,

I'm so sorry Steph, I know that must have been a terrible shock for you
My mom died of cancer about four years ago (not breast...pancreatic) and I was with her through all her treatments and everything so if you ever need anyone to talk to, feel free to email me and I'll try and help any way I can.
That being said, try and keep your spirits up, because as many other people have already said, they've come a long way in treating breast cancer. My great-Aunt has had it 3 times now and is still doing well. She beat it twice and it just came back this winter. She's 86 so she figured this was probably it but she's actually gone into remission again! So you never know. She also has the most positive outlook on life of anyone I know, so I guess there really is something to be said for positive thinking
Hang in there, Kelly

Hi everyone,
First of all I can't say how much it means to me that you all are keeping my family in your thoughts and prayers, it really touched me how fast everyone replied. I think I am still feeling a little stunned, I know that we will know tomorrow so I am just letting my mind stay sort of safe and blank for the night.
I know that no matter what happens, this will be a really hard time for my whole family. I don't know if anyone still remembers, but it has not yet been a year since my Uncle (my mom's brother, she has another sister) died of cancer. It went unpredicted for so long that once they found it, all the attempts to get it under control were pretty futile. My mom hasn't really been the same since, she has always been quite volatile and it got a lot worse this past year. I know my aunt must just be in a real state right now too. She lives quite far, but I can imagine she will come down here to be with my mom. My grandparents don't know yet, my grandpa has developed dimensia and he took my Uncle's death really, really hard. My grandma as well, but she is fairly stoic. I don't know how much of this they will be able to handle though, so I know I need to be really strong and be supportive and I just already felt so.. exhausted? with everything that has happened, so I think I have a lot of work ahead of me.
All your support is so warm and comforting, I will definitely update tomorrow after the appointment before I start my colonoscopy prep. Thank you so much. **hugs** --Steph

But with my dad....yeah, my 50 year old dad was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was in college at the time, and it was awful. They gave him 5 years to live, max. My dad and I are super close, he's a big teddy bear - everyone that meets him tells me what a nice man he is. Heck, the photographer at my wedding pulled me aside and told me, 'I just want you to know what a wonderful, kind man your father is'. Made me cry.
Anwyays, long story short - he went through chemo, all this thick brown hair was gone....got a mastectomy, and was on meds for 5 years. This was such a hard time for me, seeing him so weak and sick. Ugh. Makes me cry just thinking about it.
But he is ok!! He is in remission, it's been almost 7 years, and he's still going strong. He's going to meet his first grandchild! He's working out every morning, feeling better, and back to being the same dad I knew before, but with thinner gray hair
Just try and keep your hopes up and stay strong for your mom. I'm so sorry I just had such a hard time with the doctors giving my dad 5 years, and they were obviously wrong, and it made me miserable for so long. Think positively, and help your mom through this.
<<Big hugs>>

be strong Stephie!! In my husband's family, three of the women have had and beaten breast cancer. Your mom can do it too. I'm sure she's going to be going through all kinds of moods, but you love her and I know you'll be supportive of her. I'll be praying for you....

I'm so sorry to hear this. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, had a lot of treatment for it, and have been fine for several years now. Shelby Jean covered all the bases well and, like her, if there is anything I can do in terms of information or whatever, just let me know. My email address is in my profile.
