Hi all,

So I am getting pretty nervous about my root canal tomorrow.
I picked up my prescription for adavan the other day, and it says to take 2 before my appointment. My dentist said to bring the rest to my appointment and there are 8 other tablets, so I dunno how much of this stuff I am gonna have to take!

Adrian will be gone for 14 hours tomorrow, so I'm all on my own so that sucks. Hopefully I can just sleep.

Last night I lay on the couch until 5 o'clock in the morning 'cause I couldn't sleep, hopefully I'll get some sleep tonight or I know I will be in a state tomorrow.. and my tummy will too!
I dunno what I did exactly, but I used weights yesterday and whatever I did just killed my shoulder and every time I move my arm I get sharp pains right down my arm and it's SO painful.. I hope that doesn't keep me up!

I'll let you all know how it goes, wish me luck!!

Stephie you worry too much - you will do fine. My dentist told me people worry more than they need to. Remember your tooth is dead, so the procedure shouldn't be too painful.

I had a root canal a few months ago after cracking my tooth on a popcorn seed (I know one of the deadly foods we shouldn't eat! )and my gum was sore afterwards.

Good luck and stop worrying so much.

Good luck to you and let us know how it goes. I know how scary it is to get a root canal so I feel for you!! Actually anytime I have to see the dentist my tummy goes crazy....doesn't everyone hate the dentist??

Hang in there....I'm sure you'll be just fine!! *HUGS*

but I can tell you that a root canal is the one procedure that the most patients fall asleep to while in the chair! I think the worst part is the anticipation!!! It's a really boring procedure, and should be quite painless!!! Good luck and I hope you and your tummy pass with flying colors!

Steph, good luck tomorrow! I'm sure you'll do fine.

Just make sure you have someone to drive you there and back. I think that medicine should make you pretty drowsy. We don't want you getting into a wreck!

I'm glad you got some medicine to relax you. Let us know how it goes.

Hey Steph,

So, the root canal should be over and done with, how ya' doing? 2 mg of Ativan should have really helped out with the anxiety...hopefully everything went ok.

Just thought I'd post and see how it went

Take care,

Obviously you didn't take into account the masses or horrible luck I have been having lately or you wouldn't have been so quick to tell me not to worry!!
So yeah, it didn't go well. At all.
First the adavan didn't work, the dentist admitted he made a mistake in telling me how much to take. He said I should definitely take more for any results, but then wouldn't let me take it 'cause he said I'd be fine.
I had a total panick attack during the needle part and seriously almost pushed the dentist away from me.. but managed not to.
He kept asking if my lip was frozen, I kept saying no, he apparently didn't believe me and became to work on my tooth with the inflamed nerve at which point I screamed bloody murder because I _COULD_ feel my damn lip like I said, so it WASN'T frozen. It shot pain all over my body, I almost threw up.
So what next? Oh yeah, more needles. Lots and lots of needles, the exact thing I was afraid of.
I was totaly awake and aware of what was going on, and had clenched kleenex between my hands that the assistant lady kept trying to take and tell me to relax. And whilst doing the other things, he broke the entire inside of a tooth which he says now will probably ALSO need a root canal and a crown, so great.
OH, and by the time I can get in for that one, I will have no dental coverage and will spend hundreds, maybe over a thousand.. dollars to get them fixed.

I got home and went to sleep for a while, but the pain was really bad and I couldn't get comfortable. I finally gave in and took some extra strength tylenol, which did mess up my stomach.
So I spent the rest of the day at home by myself, crying and trying to sleep.
Oh, and because the other parts went so poorly, he didn't have time to do the other two small filings he wanted to do so I have to go back and get those done soon... Well, not too soon, as they put so many injections into my jaw that I can't open my mouth. Nice.

Let's hope my colonoscopy goes as well as this!

I can definitely empathize (and sympathize) with your experience. I am a total wuss when it comes to needles, especially in my mouth! Like some of the others have suggested, I made sure I have a dentist that uses nitrous oxide. In the US they have to have a special permit to give it--I'm not sure about Canada, but it really helps. I wouldn't have any serious dental work without it. I know dental work is very expensive here (I had a crown that cost $900 and I had to pay half of that). Hope your future experiences are much better! I had dental flashbacks reading your post.

Sorry to hear that it went so poorly Steph I'm sure your colonoscopy will go better, you're due for some better luck! I'm really surprised that 2mg of Ativan didn't work...that's a pretty hefty dose...however, if you were really keyed up (which is sounds like you were) than it's possible it wouldn't be enough. I've taken up to 1 1/2 at a time (after taking 1mg twice during the day) and if I'm really panicky, it won't calm me down

Anyways, I hope that you're feeling better real soon and that the pain subsides real quick

Kelly

Sorry to hear it all went so terribly. Wow. I suggest you look into finding another dentist who'll LISTEN to you next time. Sheesh, who starts dental work when the patient can still FEEL what's going on?!?!? Hope the pain settles down soon. Try and get some more rest. More (((HUGS)))).

I REALLY thought it would go ok, sorry for the false hope! You HAVE been having a lot of bad luck haven't you. (Hey--when is the next full moon?? ) I'm SO sorry about that....maybe you're just going through all this crap now so the rest of your life can be easy and carefree.

Rest up, and try not to worry about the other dental stuff, it can't be worse than this time, right? And maybe next time you can take the right amount of adavan!

Oh Steph... I'm so sorry it was such a horrible experience for you. Unfortunately getting through the shots is the worst part... especially if it's a tooth on the top. Most dentists are fairly compassionate and sensible about when it's ok to begin the procedure... sounds like yours was a little impatient, to say the least.

I hope you're feeling better now!!! Hugs!!

BTW... how on earth did he break another tooth?? Was he being ruthless in your mouth? Is there another dentist that you can see in the same office that might be less harsh?? If so I would have them fix the broken tooth FREE OF CHARGE and never go back to the other guy.

It's totally true !!! It's the most boring procedure there is to do and lengthy at that! Usually once the injections are completed and the procedure is under way, there's absolutely nothing for the patient to feel, not even water because of the rubber damn that's used. So patients get bored and a little too comfortable and fall asleep. I think if it weren't for having to pass instruments and sucking the water from the handpiece, the assistant would fall asleep as well...

During my assistant training I so so dreaded these!!! There are so many instruments that are used and I could NEVER remember the order. That and every dentist is different and requests different instruments at different times. (Thankfully I went on to only work in orthodontic offices... just braces, no root canals) However, many times have I seen a yawning assistant or heard the words "Jeesh that was boring"!!

Poor little thing. I feel for you. Sounds like one of MY visits. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}

I had a seizure last year in the dentist chair from the pain and broke out in spots for 3 weeks. They never give enough pain meds. Or they just don't work in a pinch, you know?

I've taken to palming my own pain meds just in case I need extra in the chair. Stoopid dentists. They balk at giving out like ONE valium, and have no clue I've actually taken 3 of them, plus 6 codiene and 2 vicodin before I even show up. And I still get terrorized by the pain.

Honestly, get a pain free specialist. It is not worth putting yourself through this. You need gas and pills, not needles stabbing you right where the doc's just scraped.

I'm so sorry you had a terrible time. I guess we all just thought more bad just CAN NOT happen to you.

I have terrible anxiety at the dentist too. Just an FYI Dentist's have the highest suicide rate. It's not wonder. No one likes them or likes to go to them. I fortunately have a very good friend who is my dentist Thank goodness cause I wouldn't like going either if I didn't know him!!!

I hope you are feeling better now sweetie! Try not to stress over the next appointments. I think the worst is over
