I just got back from my barium meal for my stomach and small intestine. I have never had to drink anything so disgusting in my entire life, and so much of it. Oh my Lord, I feel like my intestine has been filled with cement. Ginger tea here we come!!! That was a nasty experience, but I am so glad I did it...results tomorrow!

Oh yeah. I'm so, so sorry. I remember that well- the hockey puck of scrambled eggs, served between bread with jelly (?????). I almost threw it up a zillion times.

I'm glad your test is over- and I hope you can erase the memory of that "food" soon!!!

Dalia!
First of all - we're SO pround of you! I'm sure it was awful and horrible and yucky and disgusting!!! But now it is over and YOU DID IT! It's important to figure out what's going on inside you and that's a good way to start.

Now, for my questions, since I will be doing this test in a couple of weeks (poor me)! I've heard they shake you to get the barium to go down through your intestines and coat your stomach - did they really shake you?!? Also, the nurse I spoke to said my test is at 8:30 in the morning, but I should be fine to into work that afternoon. I don't know how I feel about that. Having just done the deed - what do you think - how would you feel in an office setting right now trying to be productive in putting together your briefings and reports and letters and whatever regarding religious persecution in China and North Korea (since that's what I do)? Also - as the day goes on - let me know how things go with getting the barium out of you - I don't know about you, but I'm nearly as afraid about the barium pooh as I am about the barium drink...

Thanks Dalia - and again - you're a brave soul! Keep your spirits up and I'm sure you'll get through all your tests with flying colors!

YAY for you! I had that test 2 months ago and I described it as a mixture of lemon/milk/... and whatever else. It was super gross.

Let us know what the results are!

You are so sweet! Thanks so much for the encouragement...I have to say I am in a very good mood now, even though I feel disgusting in my belly because I got through it and I faced my fear and it made me a stronger woman. I am also delighted to finally, after ten years of suffering, being able to get some real info on the beast in my belly.
In answer to your questions...they didn't shake me AT ALL. They have this weird bed that can stand vertical and horizontal and you start off standing vertical and thats when you down a shot of bubbling stuff to give you gas and then immdiately a shot of barium. I am not going to lie to you, the barium is like nothing I have ever tasted, its consistency is like thick glue and I will confess that taking the gas forming stuff and then the cup of barium which they made me down quickly - I weeped. I thought I may throw up because they don't allow you to burp. But its not TERRIBLE.
Instead of shaking you they make you lie on your belly, then your side, then your back, then your other side etc etc...so the rolling around coats your stomach.
Are you just having your stomach checked out or your small intestine too? If you are also having your small intestine..they make you drink WAY more barium...some of it is a bit thinner in consistency but equally disgusting in my opinion. Its a bit like fear factor. One of my biggest problems was that I am really little and only eat small meals, so its hard for me to consume that quantity of ANYTHING let alone something I HATE!
But I am here, alive, but tired.
I am not going to work today, but I tend to be kind to myself in general. I want to be home to drink loads of fluids and then take milk of magnesia tonight (as they instructed) so I can poo all this stuff out. I want it OUT!!! I am very curious and a little apprehensive of the poos BUT your nerves of the poos will go away simply because this stuff is so disgusting, you will want it out ASAP!
It really is worth doing. I can tell you about going to work, that you will feel sluggish, like you are full of cement...but you won't have your head in the toilet or anything, so in essence you can do gentle work, but not rush around. That is impossible.
Good luck...I'll keep you up to date on my poos if you like!!
XXXXThanks for your encouragement, it means a lot!

thanks sweet tommy...they told me to take milk of magnesia tonight for the C it will cause - results tomorrow hopefully. the only thing the Dr at the radiology place would tell me (was secretive about everything else) was that I had reflux. something I never knew - I don't get heartburn (knock on wood) but do get a tickly throat AND chronic nausea. thanks for caring darling!

I think everyone has a little reflux. When I had mine they said I had some reflux and I RARELY get heartburn! And yes, I rememeber them saying to take milk of Magnesia.

Good luck Dalia!

And it was DISGUSTING!
Did they make you drink some 'gas pills' first as well?? I had never heard of these before, but I had to swallow a whole bunch of these sort of crystallised things and I got about two drops of water to swallow them down, so they were fizzing in my throat and stuff, it was awful. Then they told me I had to keep it down, and not to burp which was really painful.
THEN I had the barium and it was worse than I remember - so thick I almost gagged. Then the thing I was standing on fell backwards so I was lying down, and they made me roll from one side to other about 10 times, it was so embarassing and awful wearing one of those stupid hospital gowns.
Anyway, as soon as it was over all I wanted to do was to throw it up. I kept gagging, but I couldn't throw it up so I just went to bed and tried to wait for it to settle a little.

I won't have my results for over a week, so here's to waiting!
I'm glad yours went okay and there were no disasters, thank goodness for that!!

And why anyway would they flavor it with something you're NOT SUPPOSED to swallow in the first place?!?

Stephie,
I'm proud of you too! I'm really scarred about the gassy pill stuff too (not sure if you saw my note to Dalia - I have this test in a few weeks). But as my husband will attest - I can burp like a champ - I burp often just from drinking water! I never drink soda or beer for the yuckiness it causes me - I am really worried that the gas pill part of the test will either make me puke or will just hurt so badly I will cry! Am I over-reacting or is there something that could be said to ease my fears on this?

Either way - Steph I'm glad you got through the test and you're one step closer to knowing what's going on in that tummy of yours! Let us know when you get the results and find a way to pamper yourself as a reward sometime soon!

Hey Dalia,

I have had some cramping, especially while on the loo but it's not worse than I regularly get with attacks.
If you don't usually get pain, and it's really bad and you're worried about it, maybe just give your doc a call to let him/her know and ask if that's normal.

I hope you feel better!!

Hey Dalia,

Sorry you're in so much pain Not sure if you'll get this before you call the doctor and/or get better. Just wanted to let you know I had similar pain following my test, just really bad lower abdominal pain that had me really concerned. Mine thankfully turned out to be nothing more than just barium constipation, but if it's really painful it wouldn't hurt to contact the doc. Barium can in rare cases cause a blockage of the intestine which would cause severe pain.

Keep us posted!

thanks soooo much. I paged my gastro doc who called immediately and he said though such severe pain is not normal, he is not worried and said it was most likely barium constipation. I took a levsin which took away about 15% of the pain and added a hot water bottle and drank endless cups of liquid...milk of magnesia last night and have started to poo it out. Thanks so much for your message!
