Just wondering how many of you with IBS also smoke, and does it improve IBS dramatically if you quit? I had IBS before I started smoking again. I know it has made me feel worse, less energy, heart burn even nausea and dry heaves the first week I started again. Once and a while it makes me get cramps like I have to poo. I thought it would reduce my stress level so I didn't know if it was worth it or not, all my friends smoke and it's hard not to. Don't have the will power to just quit again. Plus I kinda like smoking sometimes despite the deadly side effects. I can't do anything else, can't hard'y drink beer or do anything bad to my body so smoking is like something I can do to rebel. Cause I am a rebel. lol.

Ok, you caught me! I still smoke. TERRIBLE habit and it wreaks havoc on my tummy, but it's the one thing that I haven't been able to give up. I will eventually (all smokers say that, don't they?), but for now I can't bring myself to give it up (though I have cut down DRASTICALLY). I know this is horrible for me - more than just for the IBS, but I enjoy it and I live with my BF who is a smoker, so quitting now would be very difficult. The diet is helping me tremendously and I know it can only get better if I quit smoking, but I just don't want to right now.

I can't smoke cigarrettes because I can't inhale due to asthma. I do smoke cigars, a handful of them a year ever since I was 15. I don't inhale those.
I imagine I would be a smoker if I didn't have asthma, but I live for those cool crisp full lungfuls of air that don't make me choke and throw up. I get a handful of those a year too.

I think it's my alter-ego I catch smoking sometimes! Seriously, though...I try not to, but the harder I try the more I smoke. If I don't think about it, less than ten a day now. I used to smoke more than a pack. Does it affect my IBS? Oh yes...combine it with a cup of really black coffee and I'm having spasmodic BMs until two or three in the afternoon without a break to breath! I force myself to smoke outside, which is a deterrant...I have to sit on the porch...I do this even in the middle of winter without a coat on...sometimes sitting on the cement is like sitting on a toilet. Gross.

After smoking about 10 years. Honestly I can't say I noticed much of a difference in my IBS! (I know people will be mad I said that...) Well actually - the 2 weeks after I quit were the worst, constant D and pain....but after the withdrawel was semi-over (it'll never be completely over), my stomach was back to the same.

If smoking is something you do just to rebel then I'd rethink it for just a second. There are plenty of other things that you can do to make yourself feel like a rebel that won't cause cancer or other illnesses.
I smoked for 10 years and just quit in January (4 months!! Yay me!!)....I understand how hard it is to stop but you really should try! It's not as hard as you think it is. I went from 1 pack/day to nothing without any help....just cold turkey....so I know you can do it!!
I haven't noticed any difference with my IBS since quitting though....but I have noticed that I smell things more...things taste WAY BETTER and my lung capacity has improved soooo much.

The rest of the story is...I smoked for 7 years, quit for 2 and recently, about 2 months ago started up again. From the responses I got it doesnt seem to be a trigger for IBS, but I know it sure doesn't help it.

I do. Now that I don't combine it with coffee it doesn't make me poo so much any more! heh.
I tried giving up the summer I was a total raging b*tch the whole time.
I do kinda like it still, but I'm also ashamed of it, and I know I'll need to do something about it before I'm 30.
