I recently purchased some veggie slices, obviously a sub for cheese. I recently noticed that they contain casein (a dried skim milk protein). I this safe? Any other alternatives?

Hi,

Some people can tolerate casein and others can't. I'm afraid it's a matter of trial and error.

I would suggest trying a very small amount.

Personally, I found it upset me but I know many others find it to be fine.

I couldn't do it myself. Oh, and if you're stabilising now, you might want to leave these for another time in case you set yourself back.

Rice cheese doesn't contain casein but tastes awful IMHO. I've given up on cheese.

I tolerate it just fine. It's the lesser of two evils (regular cheese being the other.) The ones without casein in them taste terrible.

rice cheese in US does contain casein. Every brand I've checked out has had casein. The only non-casein cheese substitutes are made of soy or oat. They say Vegan on them. So, look for Vegan and you know it is totally dairy free. Unfortunately, they taste like crap! And don't melt at all.

I personally cannot tolerate soy and I can't have oats (I'm GF) so I just go without too.

That must be a Brit thing...all the hard soy cheeses I've found are lovely but have casein in them. The rice cheeses were vegan but so gross!

I can't do soy and oats either. Both make me horribly gassy and give me explosive D. I compensate by sneaking a slice of american cheese once every few weeks instead. If it's going to do the same thing to me, I'd just go straight for the cheese and cut out the soy middleman!

Terrible, nelly. Terrible!!
