I too have pretty severe osteoporosis and was given actonel. But I am too scared to take it as my mom (who does not have IBS) told me she couldn't handle it for longer than a week because it tore her stomach apart!

Calcium constipates me, so not sure what my options are. Can anyone help us?

Hi Angie,

Sorry you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis. But fear not! That Fosamax is a MIRACLE CURE! I'm not kidding! I have a very rare condition that I've mentioned here on the Boards before which required that I be on hormone replacement therapy since I was very, VERY young. The doctors were concerned about my bones because I had no estrogen. At 40 years old, they gave me a bone density test that showed I had lost considerable mass, and they put me on a very heavy dose of Fosamax. The drug caused terrible cramping, but I continued taking it because it was crucial. After several months, I returned for another bone density test, and voila! What an IMPROVEMENT! The doctors were delighted with the results -- I got ALL my lost bone mass BACK, believe it or not! Even my dentist noticed the difference!

I also have IBS, of course, but back then my symptoms weren't as bad as they have been within the past 3 years, so I'm sure it would be difficult for me now to take the Fosamax. However, I can guarantee you it's well worth the suffering to gain that bone density, believe me.

Since that last test, the doctor put me on 1200mg. of calcium (plus "D") every day, which I've been taking for 20 years now. Hopefully I won't have to go back to the Fosamax -- but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate. That drug is truly a miracle-worker!

Good luck,
Bev

My mother just started the same regimen-- Fosamax plus Calcium with Vit D. It's really supposed to work well, and she's psyched.

I can't even fathom taking something that will give me even more pain that I already have Bev. But I am so worried about my bones. My IBS is pretty severe though, and I don't want to make it worse.

How long were you on the Fosomax? Only 3 or 4 months? I thought it was something you needed to stay on forever. And I can't handle calcium either as I am C and calcium makes this so worse. So not sure what my option is. Or if I even have a choice.

I am scared and confused as to what to do. I know they have an injection for osteo for people who cannot handle the side effects, but it is majorly expensive and most insurance companies will not cover it since there are drugs instead. The injection would be the perfect solution for me!

My sister and I both had terrible bone scans, out MOM who is in her late 60's has the bones of an 18 year old. We always hated milk and have never drank it. See what happens when you don't drink milk?

THey say after 18 months of taking the Actonel, 1500mg of Calcium, and plenty of exercise and sunshine, we should be able to quit taking it. Our bones should be in much better shape. I am hoping so.

how does your body handle the actonel? Do you take the calcium along with the actonel? I am so constipated and hurting already, I cannot imagine putting something into my body that will increase both of these symptoms! What do these do to YOUR body since you are also C too, right?

But my bone scan shows over 80 year old bones! I screwed up my body with too much phosphorous in soda (pulls out calcium from bones, and I was drinking like 6 cans or more a day befor IBS ), plus I didn't get my periods for years. So with lack of dairy, the soda, and no periods, totally wrecked my bones.

If I had only known... But I probably would have still done it as it was a problem I had no control over.

But why must I pay for it later, when I am over all that? Guess the abuse took it's toll.

How long have you been on the actonel now?

My IBS is severe right now, with horrible cramping and constipation. That is why I am so hesitant to take both the osteo drugs and the calcium. I don't know what to do. How can I intentionally cause myself more pain and C?

I wish I had taken it before my IBS got severe. But it is so bad now, don't know if my body could handle these drugs. They tore my mom's stomach apart and she doesn't even have IBS. Did the same to two of her friends at work too. I have heard so many bad reactions to these drugs. Just don't know if it's worth it. But then, don't want to end up with one of those humps either! No offense, but I think those would be horrible. I see women walking with them, and they can't even look up straight! Horrible.

You are the first person who has told me that it didn't cause a problem.

I cannot tolerat most drugs. Have been through over 7 Anti-depressants because I could not tolerate them, even at the lowest dose. My body does not like drugs!

My mom will not take the actonel. She refuses to be in the pain. I am conflicted on this.

HI Beth honey!

I have been on Actonel for about 4 months. Yes, I am a C, I do not know if it is affecting me or not, I take so many different meds that it is hard for me to know. The only Calcium that I can tolerate is Viactiv. I take 1 in the morning, 1/2 of one in the middle of the day, and 1 at night. This could be causing me constipation, but I keep on going. This bone thing is so important, I am afraid of falling and breaking bones. I fall often, because I am not coordintated, and don't spend much time looking down when I walk, I am trying hard to be better about that.

I had no idea about the soft drinks. I used to knock them back as much as you. I wish I had known.

My sister tells me that her dr. says we need to get regular sunshine, it helps the Calcium work better in our bodies, and regular exercise! I hate exercise. But, I do have to get at it, I have the responsibility of 2 boys, and occasionally their little 2 yr. old brother. If I want to be healthy for them as they grow older, I need to start being better to my body.

If I get stressed, I get C so fast. I was in Court with my son most of the day, that is a terrible place to be (family court). I saw 3 people at different times have breakdowns right in the waiting area, OMGOSH it really got to me, seeing the pain in these people. Loosing control, after loosing a battle in front of a judge. A-hem...I digress...When I got home, I felt as if I had not been to the potty in a very long time. Yes, it is painful.

I don't know if I answered any of your ??, I hope so. I have been away from my pc for a few days, sorry it took me so long to see this!

I still don't know about this Actonel.

Sorry things are so stressful for you right now. Family problems effect so many people. But worth fighting for. Keep up your strength and try to take care of yourself too.

Augie, did you have a question? I'm not clear as to why you bumped this for me.

You said you don't think your body can handle these drugs, okay, then don't take them. It's your choice; no one can make it for you. You said you don't think it's worth it, then you've made your decision.

Good luck,
Bev

I've decided to wait and try and feel better first. They are sitting on my counter right now, but I need to get my tummy better first. Hopefully I will be able to do that one day. I am having doubts.

But thank you for your support.
