Hey Guys,

Do any of you have any tips for getting rid of sinus congestion (any helpful home remedies or stuff along that line?). I've had sinus infection for 3+ weeks that won't go away, I've tried antiobiotics, decongestants and regular steam inhalation, but so far no luck.

Any tips would be great!

(Reluctant to be an expert, that is, not reluctant to help!)

Sorry you're having a rough time. First of all, call your doctor. He/she needs to be aware that you finished your course of antibiotics and are still infected. You might have to go on a stronger antibiotic.
Beyond that, here is what has worked for me. Saline spray is essential. My favorite is Simply Saline, available at most drugstores and at www.drugstore.com. It's in a compressed-air can, and will deliver a continuous spray for as long as you hold the button down. I prefer this to the Ocean brand I used to use, because with that one you had to keep squeezing over and over, and I always worried about releasing it while it was still in my nose, because it can suck the germs in. The Simply Saline has a one-way valve so you can't get your infectious juices inside. Sorry to be graphic. If you can't get to a drug store, there's another thing you can do. Boil some water and let it cool to body temperature, or slightly warmer if you can handle it. Mix in enough salt that it forms a suspension -- you don't want too much undissolved salt in there. Now, if you have a baby nose-ear irrigator, that's ideal. Put the water into a bowl and bring it to the bathroom. Fill the irrigator with some of the warm salt water, lean over the sink, and squirt as much as you can up one nostril. Do this over and over, blowing your nose into a strong paper towel or just out into the sink. Then do the other nostril. As you do each nostril, try experimenting by squirting it up, squeezing your nose shut, and bending all the way forward with your head between your knees, or from side to side (like hip bends at the gym). I try to visualize the water going into all of my sinus cavities. Warning: hours later you might bend down to tie your shoe, and have a flood of water flow from your nose! If you don't have the nose-ear irrigator, there is another method that works but is not as great. Wash your hands thoroughly with water and mild soap and rinse them really well. Then cup your hand, scoop up some of the warm salt water, and just stick your nose in and sniff it up as much as you can.

Spicy foods, especially pepper spicy (Mexican), work really well. Mustard spicy (like wasabi) works for a second but doesn't last as long. Hot and sour soup also works really well for decongesting.

OTC decongestants can be really good. I personally can't tolerate them during the day, but maybe you can. Dayquil / Nyquil are both pretty good. I usually take Tylenol Cold PM or Nyquil at night, and then nothing during the day. Instead, during the day, I use Afrin 12-hour moisturizing nasal spray. You can only use this for three days and then must put it away in your medicine cabinet and forget about it. Otherwise you can become addicted. So, use the Simply Saline or other method right when you get up, and then do the Afrin. Same thing at bedtime. Of course, you can do the Simply Saline as often as you like, since it is just saline. You can use it every day for the rest of your life, so don't worry at all about that. The only thing I try to keep in mind is that I don't want to rinse out any of the Afrin, so that's why I do the Saline first .
Steam can work really well. You can drape a wet towel over your head, and lean over a bowl of hot water. You can also add some Vicks vapor rub, but be careful because it is oily and can splatter. An easier method is to just bring a tub of Vicks into the shower and open it up, and just let the hot water run on you. Put a mentholated cough drop in your mouth too, and breathe in the steam.
That's about all I can think of. I used to suffer from chronic sinus infections, basically all through childhood and adolesence. I had sinus surgery when I was not quite 15, which is generally considered really young, but it was my only option. I had been on antibiotics almost constantly for 3 years, adn the infections weren't going away. I was resistant to every oral anti-biotic, and the next step would have been IV antibiotics in the hospital. If you are ever considering the surgery, I'd be happy to talk to you about it. 8 years later, I get about one to two sinus infections per year, which is pretty "normal" for people who don't have sinus problems. Instead of every cold or allergy attack turning into an infection, I am able to fend things off with OTC decongestants, and I feel a lot better not being on antibiotics anymore.
Feel better, and feel free to ask me any more questions.
Oh, warm compresses on the face are nice too!
Best,
Panda

Thanks so much for your response and all your tips Sorry to hear you had a lot of problems with your sinuses too. I almost had surgery when I was younger, but the problem seemed to subside on its own for a few years only to be back now with a vengence!

Two questions for you...first of all, my actual nose isn't stuffed up at all. Everything is draining into my eyes (which is really gross) leaving my nose clear. I can feel all the pressure/pain in my sinuses but don't feel "congested" Do you think that spray would still help?

Secondly, what did you think about the surgery? Was it a fairly easy procedure. My doc has mentioned it as a possibilty but I have to wait until I see a ear, nose and throat specialist which will be at least 3 months.

Thanks again!
Kelly

My actual nose usually isn't stuffy either. Yes, I still think the Saline will help, because it will free up everything plugging your sinuses.
I found the surgery to be really helpful, and here's why. Every time you have a sinus infection, scar tissue grows and stays. This narrows your passages and makes all of your openings smaller. That means that every time you get a cold or an allergy attack, the fluid cannot drain as easily as it used to. The result is that the fluid stays where it is and develops into an infection ... which leads to more scar tissue, and makes you more likely to get ANOTHER infection, leaving more scar tissue ... you get the idea. The surgery straightened my septum, and removed ALL the scar tissue from all of my sinuses. When they did a CT scan before the surgery, every single cavity in my face was 100% filled. There wasn't one empty spot anywhere. Even though I was young, the doctors felt the surgery was my only option. So, they emptied all of those cavities and made all of my openings bigger, so my body could drain itself better. I was pretty uncomfortable the first night after the surgery, and had a sort of sling thing that hooked around my ears and held a gauzy thing under my nose. Attractive, really. My doctor didn't "pack" my nose, which is something a lot of people fear. Instead, he used plastic strips that are very thin and flexible when wet. He placed one on each side of my septum, and they hardened and acted as splints. He removed them a week or so later. If your septum is straight you won't even need this, and the surgery would be a lot less complicated (not that it was complicated for me anyway). I was pretty sore for a while, but not tremendously swollen or black and blue. I went to a fourth of July party 3 days later, and just had a very runny nose, nothing else. I was still sore to the touch about a month or so later, but not terribly so. I would do it again in a heartbeat, even if it were only to last 10 years. I'd do it every 10 years for the rest of my life to avoid the way I suffered with the infections before the surgery.
Do you have polyps or anything else going on? Find out about that, since they have deep roots and can be more difficult to remove.
Basically, if I could handle it at 15, it can't be that big a deal. See an ENT and honestly I would reccommend that you jump at the opportunity to have the surgery if they suggest it!
Hope that helps,
Panda

Hi guys! Don't mean to butt in! Just wanted to say AP's advice is WONDERFUL and I'd follow every inch of it! Also make sure to hydrate yourself. You may not realize it, but blowing your nose constantly or even having your eyes tearing nonstop can make you dehydrated really quick. Make sure to drink plenty of warm water (or whatever you like to drink in a pinch!) and your sinuses will keep flowing with no problem until it's all out of you!!

{{{{{{{{HUGS!!!}}}}}}}} This will pass eventually, please don't forget that!! I'm so sorry you're having to go through this!!! I too have sinus probs, and broke my nose in several places over the years, and now my sinusees drain through my eyes too, esp the left one.

Fun at parties!

I have suffered from sinus infections for many years. Right now, I am seeing an Allergy Doctor, and taking injections every week to help build up my immunity. IT has really helped me. I do not know how to set up a link, so here is the website for you, www.neilmed.com, or, www.sinusrinse.com, or nasalrinse.com. Check it out, I hate doing the rinses, I have found that doing them in the shower is a great help. Drink lots and lots and lots of water to get that stuff thinned out. I hope this helps you Kelly, I know how miserable you are. the important thing, is to keep the bottle cleaned to ward off contamination. You can do that easily. IT is important to do this routine 3 times a day.

My Doctor sells this great little bottle $5.oo each. It is called Sinus Rinse. You fill it with warm water mixed with pickling salt (doesn't have the impurities in it that table salt has) and baking soda. I just fill up a small pitcher of warm water, mix the stuff in, stirr it good, and start filling the bottle. It has easy directions on the side of the box. Every time I use it, I spray a little Clorox Cleanup in it, and fill the pitcher with warm soapy water, let them sit in it, then rinse well and dry out on cabint. You do this 3 times a day, and if you are having an infection like the one I have right now, you are going to be really grossed-out by what you see come out of that nose when you spray water into one nasal cavity. I start out spraying, it has a nozzle that fits up into your nose, you squeeze the bottle, and gently blow your nose and open your mouth, it is amazing how much easier you can breathe, and how much better you begin to feel after cleaning that junk out of your sinus'. IT is wonderful, I love this stuff, my doctor started me on it over a year ago, to keep me from having sinus surgery, which does not sound appealing to me at all. I have had too many surgeries the last too years and I am just not going to do any more unless they are blatantly life threatening. Anyway, the product is called "Sinus Rinse", there is also a phone number (877) 477-8633. If you have problems finding this, let me know and I will be happy to help you get one from my Dr. office.

Thanks for your advice...I appreciate it Sorry to hear that you too have sinus problems...it does suck doesn't it? Your "fun at parties" statement made me laugh! I've actually had a problem with work because they keep thinking I have pink-eye and wanting to send me home so I don't infect everyone

Thanks for your advice Gayla! I'll definately take a look at those sprays. The doc I saw today gave me a prescription for a cortosteroid nasal spray that she thought might help, so I'll give that a go and see where I'm at from there

Thanks again!

I use a neti pot every day and I'm very pleased with it. A neti pot is a little pot, not unlike a small teapot, which is used to irrigate the sinus & nasal passages with salt water. It's much the same result, I'm sure, as the other irrigating systems talked about here. It's very easy to use, mix 1/4 tsp salt to every cup of water, and use the little pot to pour the water in one nostril- it flows through the other. At first I was a little frightened by the idea of pouring water into my nose, but it's really soothing and I think it's really helping my sinuses stay clear- and I've had a lifetime of hay fever, sinus infections, bronchitis, and sundry respiratory ickies.
Here's the proof in the pudding: all my students are sick and I'm not. I think it may have to do with cleaning all the junk out of my sinuses every morning.
Here's some more info, if you're interested...
