I was talking to my ex this morning....just chatting like we always do and he said his stomach had been bothering him and he'd gone to a specialist.
He said he asked the specialist about IBS and was told that IBS is a stress induced problem (in other words "it's all in your head")....
Then he says to me "You're probably on medication for no reason" ....GRRRRRRRRR
Anyway....I went off on him....and now we're not talking....but I couldn't help it. I'm sick of the "it's all in your head" crap!!!

Kimm- Don't you just wish anyone who says this or rolls their eyes when you talk about IBS would just be able to experience this for a week! I guarantee they would never make smart remarks like that again.
The doctor I went to yesterday when I had my shoulder x-rayed was going to prescribe me a narcotic for the pain. I told him my tummy doesn't tolerate those because I have IBS. He got this funny look on his face and said well what do you want for the pain then? I said nothing I'll take motrin at home when I need it! It is just so irritating sometimes! *hugs* to you!

F-that! I had a friend who said its all in my head. I went off on him so badly. That just annoys me. Stress is part of it but not the whole!
Grrrrrrr, that burns me!

My father used to insist my stomach problems were just stress and possibly some food intolerances, but nothing major.
Now that my mother and my brother have also been diagnosed with IBS, he doesn't say that anymore. But still, it's annoying! I think your ex and that doctor need a smack upside the head!

I agree!! Anyone who says IBS is in our heads should be forced to live with our tummies for a week!!!! I bet they would be changing there tune!!! Very frustrating!!!!

AARRGGHHH! I hate when that happens! Luckily I am running into more and more people that really recognize it as a legitimate illness. I thought that was an old school way of doctor thinking? bothers me that they may still think that... maybe that is why no one would give me a diagnosis when I fell ill with IBS, they didn't want to feed into my dellsusions...

my ibs WAS CAUSED BY DRUGS (PRESCRIPTION) USED TO TREAT A LIFELONG NEUROPATHY in my left foot after an accident. It appeared all in one moment when I added Vioxx to help a sore shoulder. that moment is clear. IBS aggravated by stress but it is not in anybodies head if you have had my tummy since that day. take care and GOD BLESS

Oh my gosh! Really with Vioxx? I used to take that very arely for my jaw pain (TMJ) and I always had an upset/bad stomach the next day. I bet this is what made my IBS worse, or even caused it?

You know these comments comming from physicians really use to make me angry. But now I am able to recognize that it is IGNORANCE. It is pathetic comming from an mD particularly since in many studies it has been shown that it is a motility problem of the intestines. I guess thats why physicians should ALWAYS participate in CONTINUING EDUCATION. Dont feel bad many people think this way about IBS but this is when it is good to say knowledge is POWER.
