Hey Guys,

Hope everyone's doing good...sorry I haven't been on much lately, I've recently started back at work after being on disability for roughly three months, and I'm having some bad family problems so it's been kinda crazy. But, I've been checking in and reading everyone's posts!

Anyways, I've been having terrible nightmares (or just really screwed up dreams) ever since starting on Effexor and I'm also having really bad night sweats. I think the sweats are actually related to the dreams (i.e. I'm getting so scared I'm sweating). Anyways, it's getting so bad I have to get up multiple times to change pjs and stuff, and I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks

I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen or has any suggestions. I'm tolerating the Effexor really well otherwise, so I don't want to go off it because I don't want to put my body through that right now.

Thanks guys,
Kelly

Hi kelly, I havent been on much lately either. I have experienced the horrible night mares you are speaking of. I have awoken screaming and jumping right on top of my poor sleeping husband. HE told me if I didnt quit it he might have a heart attack, I was scaring him that bad. I cannot explain the fear that I suffered with the dreams. I cannot remember what meds I was taking at the time, I dont think I was taking any. Through therapy and finding the right meds, my dreams have stopped. The anti's can cause so many problems, if you were not having the dreams before hand, it may be a good idea to talk to your doc and change them. You need your rest, your body needs it so it can heal. As for the sweating, I did not start that until it was time for me to go on HRT, that helped tremendously. How old are you? Is it time for your ovaries to start giving you troubles?

hope it gets better soon, keep me posted.

That's interesting... Because I find that when I fall asleep (and forget to take the Effexor), I get nightmares.

The thing with these meds. is that everyone has a different chemistry. As the saying goes, "one man's/woman's food is another's poison."

Perhaps, you might consider trying a different AD.

I've had vivid dreams and talked in my sleep and had night sweats. Though I think the sweats are down to Fibro with me.

Except that the nightmares have pretty much stopped for me, and the sweats have continued. In fact, I was just complaining about it to Adam last night. I don't sleep in pjs, so I end up waking up in the middle of the night in damp sheets, and it's pretty darn gross if you ask me.

But if it's what I have to put up with to feel like I do on Lexapro, it's a small price, I guess. It's been my only long-term side effect. I'm sure I'll eventually learn how to sleep through the damp sheets. (Eww.)

Honestly, I was worried about my sanity too... first of all, because I'm actually NOT roasting, I'm sweating like mad and I'm not even hot! Second because it's only my legs!! Weird! But glad to hear I'm not alone.

There are a lot of us on AD's. Check out the antidepressants thread - and I'm pretty sure that's not even all of us.

Definitely, none of us are alone.

Yes, I had this same problem when I was taking Zoloft. My dreams were so vivid that I felt like I was watching Walt Disney movies all night. Once I dreamt that my neighbor's little girl was a pizza and was flying through the school cafeteria and talking to everyone!!! And I would wake up every couple of hours. I never felt like I got into a deep sleep. The doctor thought it was the depression messing my sleep up, but it was the medicine. Once I was off of it, my sleep cycle went back to normal. Maybe they can change the dosage for you.

Currently, I'm one of a few people in my life that I know is on antidepressants (save a neighbor and an aunt).

However, MOST of the people I know should either be on meds or have therapy or BOTH!!!

-think we all can relate to that!!!
-people who stress us out cos they don't deal w. their issues.

Thanks for referring me to the thread. Bob

Thank you guys for all your responses, glad to know I'm not the only one out there experiencing this! To be honest, I don't really feel like the Effexor is doing anything for me, I haven't noticed any difference in my tummy or my anxiety. Also, I am by no means depressed, I just have major anxiety issues (GAD).

Does anyone know why doctors seem so reluctant to just prescribe therapy with anti-anxiety agents? You know like valium 3 times a day? I don't understand why they always push the anti-ds? I've taken ativan on and off for awhile and it helps me way more than the anti-ds do, but they won't treat me that way...and it's so frustrating because the anti-ds are so expensive and I can barely afford them, and they don't even seem to be working!

GRRR, sorry just needed to vent about that!

Sorry to respond a few days later and I haven't read the other responses to your post. I can't read close to a thousand e-mails.

My doctor took me off Effexor due to the nightmares. My were so vivid that I felt like I was losing my mind and getting little sleep didn't help.

Effexor works in the central nervous system, which has a higher rate for causing nightmares. Weaning off a drug you just started isn't that bad - your doctor should wean you off slowly and start you on a new anti-depressant before you completley wean off the drug.

Maybe you are not dealing with depression as much anxiety. If anxiety is more of a problem than other anti-depressants work better. I take paxil and do very well on it. There is a new Paxil call Paxil CR, which is suppose to be easier on the stomach.

Hope this info. helps and I didn't repeat any advice you already recieved.

Valium is an additive drug, so any drugs that are additive in nature the doctors will not prescribed often.

A quick fix drug, called Xanax, is good to take if you want a short and qucik acting drug.
