Hey Guys,

I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever had to have a D & C, and if so, if they'd be willing to share any information about it? I've had my period for over five weeks now, and my doctor is at a complete loss for what to do (real helpful eh?) so I just have to sit tight and wait for a gynecologist appointment which is in the middle of October. My regular doc did mention the possibility of a D & C, and for some reason the procedure seems really scary to me...so anyone with any info would be great!

Kelly

I had a D & C quite a while ago. I can't remember if they put me out or not but do remember it was not a big deal. It helped with heavy periods.

I had a D & C July 7th. Mine was because of a missed miscarriage. The procedure itself is pretty easy. I got to the hospital around 10 and was home by 1:30! They had me put on a lovely hospital nightgown, the nurse started an iv, the dr and anastegeoligst (SP??) both came in and talked to me real quick. Just before they weeled me into the actual operating room, they put some sort of relaxant into my iv. I remember being weeled into the room and saying "I don't want to see all this equipment." The dr said, don't worry and before he finished his sentance, I was out!

Offically, I had whats called a suction D & C. They use a vaccum hose kinda thing to "clean you out." Sounds pretty awful but like I said, I was completey out! The procedure only took about 20 minutes to half and hour. I woke up in the recovery area and had some moderate cramping, like period cramps. The stick a pad between your legs because you will be bleeding a little. Other than the cramping, I wasn't sore or anything. They got me up pretty quick and I got dressed. I was fairly crampy for the rest of that day the all of the next. I only bleed for about a day and it wasn't real heavy. I went home and slept for a while, hubby made me some dinner and I went to work the next day.

Physically, it was pretty easy. Most of my pain was mental, I hated knowing why I had to have to procedure done. They tell you that there is a small chance of scar tissue but I haven't heard of that being a problem for anyone.

Have you been taking any form of birth control? A good friend of mine was on Depo and she got her period for 6 months straight because of it.

Her doc took her off it and put her on the pill and she's been fine ever since.

Just wanted to let you know my mom had this done in June. She said the hardest part was the anticipation. They put her out so that helped. She felt really good by the next day and I don't think she had cramps too bad and the gas didn't last too long.

Make sure that they give you good drugs. I had one in 2001 and the nurse could not figure out how to get the drugs into the IV in time. The doctor was already in the room by the time she figured out how to get the medicine into the system and they started before it took effect. It was AWFUL. They pumped so much medicine into my system trying to knock me out that they overdosed me. I passed out when the doctor said it is over. I woke up hours later throwing up. Please make sure they give you the right amount of medicine before they start the procedure.

The recovery was much easier than the procedure itself.
