Someone posted something here recently that reminded me of something that happened a couple weekends ago and I just wanted to rant about it...lol

I was at a friend's house and there were a bunch of people I didn't know there. We were having a BBQ and they were all making steaks (can we say OUCH!!!) so I decided to have chicken....

Since I was the only one not eating steak a girl that was there asked me why I wasn't eating it and I told her I had IBS and couldn't eat certain things and her response was, "Oh I have IBS too" and then I got this look from her that said "you're blowing it out of proportion cuz it's really not that bad".

I WAS SOOOOOO ANGRY!! I mean....who knows....she might have IBS....but it's obviously not as severe as some of us because she can eat a steak and be totally fine. She obviously doesn't watch what she's eating because she doesn't have to....so what's with the look???!! I wish she would have kept her "Oh I have IBS" BS to herself....

Just had to get that out....I'm done now LOL

I swear, some people live under a rock... and you wish they'd freaking STAY there. Sorry you had to deal with that. I've run into a lot of people like her, too, and it irritates the hell out of me... people who have it pretty mildly have no concept that it CAN be a lot worse. Ugh.

I know two people who say they have IBS.

One is a woman I work with who drinks coffee daily and eats fast food almost as often. The other is a dear friend of mine who eats anything she wants (including dairy, fatty foods, etc).

I think these people might have tiny stomach problems once in a while and their doctor told them they have IBS. If we could be so lucky!

I understand completely. I have a friend who also announces to everyone everytime a bunch of us go out to eat "that I have IBS and have had it for years!" Then I watch her dip whole wheat bread in olive oil, eat a huge salad, and then a greasy fat-ladden pasta dish. Then just when I think I can't stand it another momemt, she orders dessert---usually cheesecake---and drinks coffee.

Of course, this makes me look like a big whiner when I say I can't eat such-and-such because I have IBS. She just laughs and says, "Oh, I just take my medicine twice a day--and eat what I want." (She takes Bentyl.)

I just can't figure this out! Could someone have IBS, take Bentyl twice a day, eat like that and be fine? Did I mention that she's as thin as a stick.

Sometimes I watch her eat and I hate her! Sorry, but I know a lot of you can understand where my anger comes from. It's just not FAIR.

It's possible her symptoms are still relatively mild and manageable. It's also possible she's in total denial! Either way, I try not to compare my "insides" with someone else's "outsides"! Only people who truly walk a mile in our shoes can really understand. The rest are just well-meaning idiots and are best ignored!

I agree Kimm.

Other people I am recently finding annoying are friends who say "X has IBS but they can drink", "Y had IBS but when she stopped eating Chinese takeout so much it went away"

I have already posted about the annoying strangers in the work canteen who comment on my plate of plain potatoes...update on that is that today my Senior Manager (boss's boss) shouted across the aisle in the canteen to ask if I was enjoying my potatoes..i had told him last week about being so upset when people draw attention to what I am eating etc...I had words with him when we got back to the office and told him I didn't appreciate it..and he apologised !

This is just ANOTHER burden for us to carry!

Hi Kimm,

The line I hate is, "Is that all you are going to eat? No wonder you are so thin." Gets me every time.

BTW, Congrats on your new place.

It is annoying to have to deal with other people's ignorance, but I usually answer such questions with a simple, "I have a sensitive stomach and red meat doesn't agree with it." If the person really wants to know more, too bad!

I just tell people I have a digestive disorder and that certain foods make me really sick. If they keep bugging me I start in on the graphic details of my symptoms (D, gas, pain, etc.). That usually shuts them up pretty quick.

On a positive note, my friends and advisors here at College have been sooooo amazingly wonderful. My roommate took me out to dinner tonight at a place that makes pizza with soy cheeze. I never thought I'd be able to go get pizza with my friends again and this place had something for everyone 9even the "normal" people. To make things even better I've gone five days nausea free (this may not seem like a big deal, but I've been nauseaus for the past five years) and I'm really really happy!!!!

I too used to be able to take Bentyl and manage my IBS by simply taking one before dinner or whenever. THOSE DAYS ARE GONE! #1 because I can't take bentyl anymore and #2 I'm convinced the older I get the worse it gets!

I can say though I don't think I've ever had any rude comments about my IBS. I find the more people I tell that I have IBS the more I found out they too have it. There are many people who have it and keep it to themselves. I was one of them but I now found that if I tell people they cater to me. Today we were having a luncheon for someone leaving the office and the HR director came in and said can you have Pizza? and what can you drink? I kinda felt bad in a way and said "oh don't order lunch based on what I can and can not have" but then again I respected that she was thinking of me.

My biggest problem I'm only 93lbs and am very thin and have been all my life. When I only eat a "taste" of things I get the "no wonder you are so thin, you eat like a bird". I swear people are convinced that I have an eating disorder. (Casey, I too have a major phobia of throwing up so there would be no way I could have an eating disorder in case you read this). I simply tell them that yes, the reason I am so thin is cause I can't eat a blessed thing because of my IBS. Like someone said earlier, usually shuts them up because they know the gory details might follow the letters IBS.

Ya know, I've heard that myself from several people: "Oh, I have IBS too." I'm beginning to wonder if it's some sick way of people -- as you say -- making light of your situation.

Sometimes it's just easier to say something like, "I've had steak for a solid week now, and I thought I'd like a change." Of course, if you're not concerned about their reaction, you could always respond with something like, "Why did you choose steak? To follow the crowd, you can't think for yourself?" That oughta shut 'em up.....

..... Things you'd like to do, but are too polite to do 'em......

LOL..you crack me up Bev...

What I actually ended up doing about 15 minutes later was pointing to her raw steak on the plate and saying, "ewww...it looks like a really bad car accident" ....
