IBS and Depression

Here's my story. I'm a 26 mother of 2, happily married for 5 years. Starting in January I came down with a virus that involved diarrhea, cramps, and bad nausea. This, after 12 days, disappeared and things got back to normal. 3 weeks later it came back. Everything was the same except after recovering it would return every few days for 2-3 days at a time. We changed birth control half way through the third month(march) and I was good for about 2 weeks but right after Easter I started cramping up again. I completely stopped my birth control because I had had enough with the hormones. I now have a non-hormonal IUD in. Another sympton that was rearing it's head was depression. I didn't know it at the time but after a week of "the blues" getting worse I finally had a day where I couldn't stop crying. I went to the doctor the next day and he put me on 10 mg of Cipralex per day. I should mention that we think the cause of the depression was how I dont deal with stress. My dad was diagnosed with a terminal prostate cancer, two months later he left my mom, gets a new girlfriend, and now mom has a boyfriend. It's quite complicated. This all contributed to "the crash" as I call it. Oh and I should also mention that when I was experiencing the diarrhea, cramps, and nausea I basically lived on Gravol. After starting the Cipralex I haven't taken a single Gravol. It's been pretty good. One thing I have noticed is that when I have an IBS flare-up my mood drops. I've tried to ask the doc why this happens. They couldn't give me an answer so this is what I've come up with. There is a significant amount of serotonin in your GI tract and I'm taking Cipralex (SSRI) to build up the serotonin in my brain. If I have an IBS attack and my serotonin is out of wack in my GI will it pull serotonin from my brain and then in turn sending me into a funk? I've been smoke-free for 2 1/2 months and have cut even my half glass of wine outbecuse it would set off an IBS attack. This is what I've been able to come up with but any other input would really help.

I don't know. It's possible I suppose - I used to get horrendous panicky sensations in the midst of a bad IBS attack but don't know if that was because my serotonin was out of whack or strictly psychological because the attack was so awful. Plus if serotonin is involved, you don't know for sure how causality runs. If could be that your serotonin gets out of whack for some unknown reason so you have an IBS attack AND your mood drops.

If you're interested in more opinions or want to explore Heather's diet guidelines for IBS, you'll probably get more responses if you post your questions on the "IBS Diet" board rather than on this "IBS Fitness" board. This board is about diet and exercise and doesn't get a lot of traffic these days.
