Hi all,

I have been trying to get my IBS-D under control, but am running into a problem with overeating. I make a really honest effort not to do so, and have gotten much better about eating smaller portions. However, I exercise rather regularly, and within a half an hour of finishing my workout I am often very hungry. As a result, sometimes I feel like I overeat, and then have IBS issues later on. The problem is, I will try to eat a small portion, but within minutes after I am still really hungry. Does anyone have advice about how to deal with this hunger so that I don't overeat? I know it's probably just something to deal with through willpower, but sometimes its hard to have that . Any seasoned IBS veterans out there with advice? Thanks, as usual, all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I can fully understand your problem. Dont give yourself a hard time because it is easy to over eat when youre training. And the chances are youre not actually overeating, youre probably just responding to your body telling you that you need more nurishment. Ive been diagnosed with IBS recently and so im just finding my way around this thing. Im having a hard time getting enough calories into me to keep my energy levels up at the moment. I train hard and im absolutely refusing to stop doing this just because of some condition. What im doing at the moment is im changing my diet so that im only eating low GI food that hasnt been processed. Ive cut out diary, wheat and sugar. Things have improved and i know that if i stick to this that i'll be fine. IBS just doesnt happen. I know my eating habits have been not so hot for a good many years now so this is why my digestive system is reacting the way it is. It happened over a long period of time so I reckon if I stick to eating good food and eating in a sensible way i.e. grazing not gorging and chewing my food properly, my digestive system will regain a balance. Im studying sports science and health in college at the moment so we do a lot of stuff in relation to physiology and how the body works.
So to answer your question as best i can, what sort of food are you eating in your small meals? Stay away from protein supplements, processed food, diary, refined sugar. What i eat after training is:

A boiled potatoe(or 2) + About 150g of cooked white fish or 150g turkey(grilled) + Some vegetables - carrots, cauliflower, green beans

Or you could have:
Qunioa + tuna + vegetables

You could substitute tofu for the meat if you like.

Bananas + nuts make a good snack.

Gluten free porrige is also very good and goes down easy.

So try eat every 3hours or so and eat good clean food like the stuff above. If youre still hungry, add another meal in. Dont add more food to your existing meals becasue it could stress your digestive system. Make sure to take your time when your eating, this is so important. You have to eat slowly and throughly chew your food. Get your hands on a copy of "improve your digestion" by Patrick holford, its good stuff. This is something that can be sorted out so dont worry. If you have any more questions give me a shout.
